Lake Murray Report (with Sinkermaker)*
What a beautiful day to go fishing!! With today being a State Holiday, I figured I'd better spend it on the water. I can get used to these mid-week holidays cause the lake was deserted!
With another tournament season come and gone, it's time to get back to the basics and fish my absolute favorite way...single pole jigging. Normally during tournament season I find myself watching multiple rods either pulling or pushing baits in order to cover more water and find the big girls, but when it comes down to fishing for fun, my heart and soul belongs to a jig pole and ultralight. There's nothing like feeling the thump!
I gave Mr. Don (Sinkermaker) a call Sunday evening and invited him to join me this morning. He said his schedule was clear and we decided to meet at the ramp at 7:00 AM. It's been a few months since I've been around my old stomping grounds on Murray so we had to go fishing and figure out what was going on. We fished everything under the sun (except there was little sun) from bridges, stickups, docks, blowdowns, brush...you name it, we dropped or cast jigs around it. Only pattern we determined was there was no pattern :) We caught a fish or two on just about everything, but never stumbled a spot holding numbers or quality fish. We fished till about 12:30 and had 12 crappie, 2 perch, and a bream for our efforts. I think the cloudy morning hurt our cause a little bit, but overall we did pretty fair. We even found a jumbo catfish under one dock which explained why there were no crappie there.
Water temps were around 76 this morning and we caught fish on 1/32 oz jigs in black/green, black/chart., and yellow/white. Fish were caught in 4-10 FOW
On my way home from my trip with Don, I got to thinking..."I don't have anywhere to be!" So, I dropped the boat back in the water in another area of the lake and went back at it. I found things to be very similar in spot #2...a fish here and there with no quality fish to be found. I fished around brush and woody cover most of the afternoon and called it quits a little before 4. The fish I caught came out of 3-5 FOW on green/chart.
I added another 8 crappie to the livewell before calling it quits and threw back around 6 more. Now, it's back to the grind tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to chase them again before long!
