Great catch! That gar must have put up one heck of a fight. Some beautiful crappie to boot.

Not bad meat, tough as all heck to clean, just DO NOT eat the roe. Crappie is a whole bunch better eating than a gar though..
Gar fish boulets
Ugh, on the Gar, give me the Crappie, nice catch and pics!
Nice catch.
I hooked a huge gar last summer on a crankbait on a 16 foot rod. The thing jumped twice at least 4 feet out of the water. Looked like a tarpon. Luckily it came off at the boat so I didn't have to deal with getting my crank back. Quackrstackr and I got a good laugh out of it. Wish I had it on video.
I too caught a big gar while crappie fishing.
It was a few years ago and I was in a canoe.
didn't have the heart to kill it, but everyone said I should have
Good catch.
Sweet way to go!
nice fishes there and yeah i bet that there gar was a hoot .....good job ...not many make it to the picture part on light tackle
I can promise you the are not voracious feeders of game and pan fish. That long nose isn't very effecient for a predator. I just don't like to see native fish destroyed for no reason. They're more opportunistic feeders than anything. Some thing is struggling they'll nab it. I not so sure they can eat anything very large either.
That's a good
'snout" crappie ,others aren't shabby either . If green carp folks can have peacock bass why can we not have a snout crappie ? :Rofl
No, they can't eat larger fish ... but, they do feed on Shad, Sunfish, and the occasional crustacean. They can't open their mouths all that wide, so they're more likely to eat smaller fish ... but, make no mistake about it, they don't care what species that "smaller fish" is !!
Probably don't want to eat a gar unless you pretty hungry.
That is one strange looking long skinny crappie!!!!!!! Those teeth in there??? Hahahahahahaha
Fought a 4ft gar once for 25 minutes. When I got it to the boat, it opened its mouth, let my minnow go, and swam off. Never had a hook in it at all. It was just holding on to the minnow and fishing line.
