Spent my day trying dock shooting and I can honestly say that a lot more practice is needed. I am curious about the set up that the experienced people use as for rod and line.
I was using a 6ft medium Berkley Cherrywood and 10lb Stren. I did ok for the first time trying this. Today my biggest problem was timing the release. There where a lot of dudes,

I tried the dock shooting also. I am just not coordinated enough to time the release good. Like you said I released a lot of dudes also.
I would suggest going to 4lb line or 6lb . Also a push button reel is easier to learn with. I use a 5'6 lighting rod but 6ft is a good rod to . I like a stiff rod but some people like a lighter action. Just practice in the yard with a bucket and you will get it. If you can find someone who is good at fishing docks to take you it will help more than anything.

The docks on this particular lake are real low to the water and are built so as to not be fisherman friendly. Seems as if us rednecks really like to over brace our structures.
Most that I fished today offer, at best, a 12in window shoot through. I am going to drop line size and start there first.
Lighter line will help. The rod you have will work but is a little stiff. We shoot floating docks and it can be challenging.
I can get under a 2in gap. If you do it long enough you will get good at it. 12 ins is easy just practice. I sent you a pm .

I don't agree with the idea of a push button because I do agree with the idea of 4 lb line. I can hit a 4 inch spuare hole after I get warmed up, and you can too. Flat sided bait like the Bobby Garland Baby Shad help with the skip, and I prefer a 1/32 for the slower fall rate.
Just another Joe showed me some dock shooting tips today. He's south of bham if you could be lucky enough to hook up with him u could get a few useful tips.
Spinning reel and a stiff rod tip like the B&M dock shooting rod. You do not want a lot of whip in your rod tip and 6LB line. Practice.

I lived in Tenn during the mid-late 70s and this technic was called "slingshoting" and it was done with a really short rod(3ft maybe) and either a Zebco 202 or 33. You could by the combo
Practice for sure, 4/6# line and be patience!
I still use that setup. A 3' solid glass rod and a Johnson spin cast with 4# line. I've tried the other stuff and it works fine, I guess the little rod and push button are a nostalgia thing that brings memories of Papaw and Daddy and my childhood flooding back. I started shooting docks with a 5' spinning rod, then went to a 5'6" rod ... and now use a 6'6" rod. The main reason I'm using the longer rod, now ... less arm movement for a hookset.
I've used several different lengths, powers, tip actions : 5' to 8' rods and microlite to med/hvy power and slow to very fast action tips. They all worked to shoot the jig under the dock, with release timing being the most significant factor. And since I don't get "inside" the dock (in the boat slip), but shoot from the outside at a distance of 3-10ft from rod tip to dock, I saw no great advantage to using the shorter rods. And, in fact, once I started using the 6'6" fast action tip rod, I was still putting the jig well back under the dock .... and did not have to jerk my arms and rod practically over my head to set the hook.

i found that just skipping it, was easier, and much more efficient.
Most places I shoot you cant skip a jig. A lot of these places you need to shoot 20' or further back in the hole. These aren't some of the smallest places either. Dock shooting isn't the same everywhere.

That's right and them are easy compared to some I've fished.

We've shot docks in tournaments for years. Best rod is a 6.8 or 6.9 medium light rod. Use 8 pound green line because your line rubs on the pillars and metal. Also use a reel with a big spool that holds alot of line. Best rod and reel setup I ever had was a GLX Gloomis 6.10 medium light with a diawa steez. It was unbelievable. Any 6.8 + rod medium light with a simple P flueguar reel. I will shoot against anyone with a short rod and I guarantee, I will be more accurate, shoot further and more back bone and stiffness to get the fish out.
Take a 5 gallon bucket, Shut your garage on it and stand back and practice shooting into the bucket over and over..
