Ok, I just seen another post about this but it doesn't answer my question. My kit is the Sierra 18-3517, they supply a plastic tube that goes from the water pump housing to the tube that runs up to the motor. My question is, is that plastic tube supposed to be tight on the copper tube, or am I missing a gasket or something?
It's nothing more than a guide to assist in getting the copper tube positioned into the top of the water pump. They tend to melt if the water pump goes out. The top of the pump body should have a rubber grommet that seals around the copper tube.
Ok thanks. Got it figured out. Have it running now. But, the water strwamlight is pulsating. I have 10 psi of pressure. Temp gauge isn't moving. But I think it is poor water flow. What have I done wrong? I have it idling at 2000 rpm.
What is this thing on the side of the motor that is spitting water?
I can't figure out how to post pictures.
3-5psi at an idle of 900 in neutral is what you're looking for. The pulsating stream out the tell-tale can be misleading. Especially on a water hose. Pull the t-stat covers and be sure they are in place. Those motors need the t-stats.
It has the tstat in it. There is a round cover with a small hole down near the bottom on the starboard side. It is spitting water. That "thing" is under the motor covers.

What is a popped valve and what does it do?
The poppet valve controls water pressure inside the block. In the closed position, it allows water pressure to build while the engine is at a lower rpm. As the pressure rises with rpm, the poppet opens and relieves some of the pressure. Those that have a water pressure gauge see the poppet valve operating by a sudden reduction of about 5psi as they get on plane and hammer. When dropping off plane, the pressure drops to about 10psi and suddenly rises to about 15 before dropping once more as the rpm continues to drop. If water is leaking from the weep hole, the diaphragm is mostly likely ruptured from age.
