I use to work at a golf course and they were terrible in the summer. The only thing that kept them off of us is vanilla extract. Works great and smells pretty good too!
I ain't scared! When I get my 2nd turkey I'm gonna see how bad they hurt!
They whelp me up. Got bit on the lip once and it looked like I had been hit by Mike Tyson
Will a thermacell work on those things ?
one of life's great pleasures...must be the Lord's way of reminding us this ain't the promised land.
Vanilla works very well and cheap at dollar general, I put mine in a spray bottle.
They were so bad near DeValls Bluff a few years ago that cattle farmers would set a round bale of hay on fire and the cattle would stand in the smoldering smoke so thick you could hardly see them just to get some relief from the knats. I have no idea how they could even breathe. Those suckers are horrible. I took a thermacell with me to Lake Charles once when they were bad and I literally would sick my face in the vapor of it and it never phased them. They ate me alive. Imitation vanilla is the ticket.
Thanks for the vanilla tip. I hate those lil buggers!!!
Chris
I dread Turkey Season now...Them suckers always end up flying into my eye and let me tell you, it burns, hurts, and eye swells almost shut. Never have any problems with them biting me though.
Just deep breath with your mouth open and catch as many as you can, they are a good source of protein.
Got into em a couple of years ago. Went to Walmart in the camping section an got me a couple of those head nets and put in the boat.
Do not spray OFF repellent near your electronics. It will cause white specks on the housing. May be preventable if you notice it and immediately wipe down.
vanilla works, just watch out when using it at White River Refuge when the water goes down. Old Blackie bear may track you up! Lol
I hate those suckers and agree with others use vanilla.
Vanilla doesn't work that well for me. The best thing I've found to keep those demon nats off of me is Absorbine Junior. I buy it at Freds. Pretty cheap and it has a soft applicator top so it's really easy to apply on your ears and neck without getting it all over your hands. One bottle lasts a long time.
I turkey hunt and they get so bad they have run me out of the woods. Gonna try the vanilla for sure. Thanks!!
You've got to wonder sometimes, who ever thought for the first time "I'm going try vanilla to keep the bugs off"? Almost seems like it would attract bugs, go figure. But it has worked for me more than once. Absorbine Junior, well I can kind of see where that might work too. Whatever you do don't let the knats win!
There was an older guy around my hometown who was an old school rough and tough cowboy type, so I was really surprised when I saw him break out a bottle of 'Avon Skin So Soft' that looked like it should have come out of his wife's purse. But that stuff keeps everything away, mosquitoes, gnats, ticks you name it

BAR NONE, the BEST product to fight gnats is Buggins. It will not work on skeeters, but it is great for gnats. I am not affiliated with the product at all, so I am not here to market it.
Working for years cutting grass on golf courses, you learn how to deal with those nasty critters. We would spray down every morning during gnat season, religiously. Ladies do not mind the smell either. They sell it locally around here, but made in MN I think. Here is a link
Buggins Natural DEET-free Insect Repellent
Can get it on Amazon.
It is far better than all the little home remedy stuff like Vanilla (which is in it), Absorbine Jr and the like. Get the demand and you will probably get a local vendor. Amazon is $8.88, but we can buy it local for about $6.
Gentlemen, you will be glad you bought it.
