Electric Fillet Knifes

Searching the site it appears like this has been covered before and the American Angler electric knife is or was the way to go in the past.

Any suggestions / comments from someone that has a current production version of an electric fillet knife - I say that knowing some of the older versions of stuff was bullet proof.....now due to cost they use different parts etc. and they just aren't the same even if it is the same brand.

Reading reviews on the knife it seems at least the newer ones have some issues in the trigger not turning off or on.

Is there a version of the American angler that is better than the other.... I saw one at Wally World the other day for around $80 that would keep me from having to order one online somewhere.

Also if you want to add a suggestion on a regular fillet knife I will look at that as well... but I think I want to look at the electric route.

About a year ago I bought myself a Mister Twister and have been happy with it's performance. Only time will tell how long it will last, and like most things made today even within the same make and model of an item it is probably just a roll of the dice whether an individual unit will last a long time or dies much too quickly.

I bought one of the rapala lithium ion cordless knives recently after recommendation from a guide. Ive cleaned about 70 crappie so far without recharging and still goin strong.

I also have an American angler electric knife that is a couple yrs old that I haven't had any problems with. The rapala cordless knife does just as good of a job.

American angler is the only way to fly. Also you can't beat the Rapala regular fillet knife.

What he said on both. The Rapala fillet knife is nice! Very sharp out of the package!

I know it might sound crazy but I've used a lot of the above mentioned knives but the best one I've found is the Black&Decker craving knive at Wally World for $12.88! It has a great blade speed and does an outstanding job. If the blades get dull you can buy another one cheaper then the replacement blades for the fishing knives

I bought the Mister Twister about a year ago. Its OK on 10" fish but on 11"-12" fish not so much.

Mine came with two sets of blades; one set smaller and one set longer for bigger fish. You may look to see if you can buy the longer blades individually.

I was told this recently by a guide when I asked what brand he used. He said use the one you carve the turkey with.

I have a Rapala electric knife and the Black&Decker will run circles around it. I paid around $50 bucks for the Rapala and only around $12 for the Black&Decker. I just wish it had a point on the end of the blade but it is rounded on the end. Like Blackhawk19 said buy 2 when the blade gets dull just throw it away most electric knife blades cost more than the whole Black&Decker electric knife.

Went to Wally's to look for replacement blades for my old B&D and found an Outdoor Angler electric fillet knife in the sporting goods dept for $14.98. We'll see how well it works.

I bought one of the recently discovered in the warehouse american angler 12v electric fillet knives. I used it a couple weekends ago coupled with an 8 inch american angler shark blade. Truthfully speaking I was not impressed at all. My Berkeley 12 volt with the stock blade works better. I'll try the american angler again with the standard blade for comparison, but I think I've wasted my money at this point. I will try it next time with the standard blade to see how it goes next time, but for the money I think the berkly is the ticket.

I bought the wally world black n decker last year and took it back. I don't recall why I didn't like it, sorry. I have a Rapala and it works fine but I don't think there's any advantage over the ones we had 40 years ago. Might pick up a Hamilton Beach from an estate sale that gramma used.

X2 on this. It works just fine. I actually prefer the straight blades like this model has. The only disadvantage is that you can't run it off of your car battery/12V outlet. Not a big deal for me.

Blackhawk19 and Scrat are right on about the Black and Decker knives at WM I had one used given to me and its better than the Mr. Twisters in my opinion.

are those black and decker knives safe to use around running water? and as for as that goes are the american angler. on more than one occasion i've been shocked using the mister twister knives at metallic table cleaning stations with water faucets for rinsing fish....... zzzzzzz'z whew!

American angler is the only way! I have used probably every brand out there at some point after my american angler died (it was 10 plus years old). No other knife has the power. The second to the best is the black and decker turkey carver and even that is WAY down the line in comparison. I would probably bet the people who have not used american angler is probably satisfied with what they have because they may know no difference (im not being rude or mean or calling anyone dumb, I swear). I ended up spending a ton of money and ended up going back with the american angler. Reason I wanted something different in the first place was because the American Anglers were so expensive. Ended up spending more money trying to cheap out. It only cost a lil more to go first class. Let me save you some money in the long run and make things easier on your wrist. Go american angler!

I have 2 American Anglers, one is over 20 years old. Have had to replace the cord once, easy fix. Pull it apart and clean and lube gears. Newer one I keep in camper, it is the blue and gray model. Not near as powerful or comfortable as the old one. The newest model is supposed to be much better. Built more on the old style. Guys I know that have them and clean a ton of fish swear by them. I have used all the household models and a few of the old ones did a fair job but everyone was uncomfortable to use. Old mister twister was a good knife. New ones are Chinese junk. I'm just like Lowepro, spend the money on the front end and let that be the least of your worries. Prorate that 80.00 over 10-15 years. Pretty cheap.

Scrat, get you a set of the pointed replacement blades. The will fit most knifes out there and put them in your B&D. If they don't fit exactly usually a file will fix them where they will lock in. Bet your Rapala blades will fit.

I don't know of ANY electric knives that are "waterproof" or "submersible" ... so, if you're getting shocked by your knife, you may have a short or grounding issue with it :dono

I've used some pretty sketchy electrical outlets at cleaning stations, with water thrown everywhere by flopping fish & other people cleaning their catch, and never had any "shocking results". That's been with either my Mister Twister or American Angler elec. filet knives, both of which are probably close to 40yrs old. But, that being said ... whenever available, I put a wood board down on the metal sink/table and lay my fish on that when cleaning them. While that's more to protect the knife blades, it does help insulate the knife from the metallic cleaning table. I've even been known to carry my own (wood) cleaning board on trips where I know the cleaning facilities are not going to be "clean & well maintained" either by the facility owners or the anglers using it !! :twocents

One does the Berkley lithium battery operated knife. I have one really like no electric needed, no cord to get in the way. I've cleaned a 100 on one charge but I'm fast.:] The one time the battery failed I plugged in the electric box and immediately was able to finish. I like this knife a lot, need to find new blades for though.

Maybe this needs to broken into two categories, Electric and Battery operated choices. But for me the Battery operated the way to go. And she loves it in kitchen, no chord, will travel.

Found this comparing the two best Battery operated knifes, Berkley won, lighter, better battery, but both where good knifes though. World of difference between cord and cordless knifes.

I was gonna buy an electric knife. But i bought a bubba blade. Good knife with a really nice handle. Holds an edge really good. I have a worksharp 3000 so i can put a razor edge on it in about a minute. My grandpa uses a regular filet knife and can clean fish as fast as i can hand them to him. Personal preference i guess, but a knife is dependable if your willing to sharpen it once in a while

Last year, I watched a video of someone filleting bass with a certain Bubba Blade knife and it was impressive. I didn't pull the trigger because I had already bought a Rapala corded fillet knife. But I was advised, and confirmed by the company, to buy a certain model of Bubba Blade. I don't recall which one but I think it was 9". I don't recall if it was 'flex' model or just what. I may have told them I fillet mostly bass. (EDIT: I found the email; it was one year ago, so I don't know if they have newer models. But I told them I fillet bass and crappie and they said "The 9” Tapered Flex is a favorite for crappie and would work well for largemouth bass also.")

Speaking of filet knifes! Just got my second American angler Pro Filet knife! My buddy got it for me and it is AWESOME!

Yeah thats the knife i have and use. Works just like in the video. Im glad i got a bubba blade instead of an electric knife

I also have one of the Rapala Lithium ion cordless fillet knives as well as a few of their regular knives (I get a large discount on anything off that website via the pro staff thing). I love the cordless electric for doing the majority of the work then I just clean them up with the regular knife. Works like a charm.

I love my American Angler, But use my cordless Rapala the most. Both are fine. I owed 2 Mr. Twisters and had trouble with both, I have heard that they are better now.

The maiden run of my $14.00 Walmart electric went real well. The blades are pretty aggressive but I really didn't have any waste.

I have a rapala 110 v/12 volt knife the double blade type, and it seems it would be better for a right handed person. I am left handed an it wastes a lot of meat using it.
I for one prefer a Old Hickory fillet knife. It's thin enough, and holds its sharpness through 60-65 Crappie with no problem at all. Mine is a old one I bought on EBay for ten bucks. Best investment I've ever made concerning knives.
