Warmer water - no pattern discovered / fish scattered under a cloudless sky

Okay, what happened?!!

four days ago under a semi cloudy sky - good numbers
water temp 48; air temp 60; 9 or less mph wind from the sw
yellow perch done with spawn (pretty much)
45+ fish caught (3 species); 6 nice crappie
Fish found on a 50 yd line connecting two shoreline markers -anchoring and casting every 30', most caught in 6'
float bite good

today 54 degree water
fish scattered - only a few good ones
mostly small crappie, a few perch and sunnies - two dozen+
bluebird sky, same wind except from the n.e.
air a chilly 50 degrees
only 3 fish on the float and jig


What gives? Transition happening?

As the old adage goes, "The fish are where you find 'em"! I often find fish scattered hither & yon this time of the year. Just have to keep plugging away I guess. :)

If you don't have a bad day ever now and then it would get boring. Never mind shrach that I wish I could catch them every time lol.

fish can be in a negative,neutral or positive feeding mood.Plus they can vary in how tightly they are schooled,and move around around and change locations they have been from a previous day or hour for that matter. And they vary on how long per day they may be in a positive mood. May only bite good for a short while...and you may not be there.

Remember having the same problem with women as a teenage boy. I got married young so never got to keep experimenting to prove out a few theories. Been fishing for fish all my life though and still don't have them figured out either...... completely.

I got out a little late and wasn't able to survey the deepest 1/3 of the lake, it's flats and other structure known to hold fish from April on. Could be they were mulling around in that water blue bird sky or not. Most times if I can find fish in a few areas, I can get them to bit with slow finesse presentations - especially perch - but it's sure nice when crappie are schooled up.

You musta not had any minners.

The lure design I pour and cast is good on any day in any season; there isn't an outing that I don't cast them at least 40 % of the time. The variables that I consider important always involve presentation and location from which patterns are determined. Up until the last trip, catching has been easy since just after Xmas until last week. Spawn rotation of different species and increased weed growth probably has a lot to do with it, not allowing things to quiet down. The other lake I fish, after what I heard yesterday, has turned on big time for crappie. Too bad my boat's going into the shop for a misaligned axle and the docks haven't been put out yet, otherwise I'd have been the first one out there in the beginning of March.

So many waters to fish, so much time on my hands....thank G for low gas prices!!!

Well spoonie, yo lure didn't do the trick that day did it. Try a minner next time.

I only time I'm tempted to use a live grub is when ice fishing, otherwise live bait is off the table.

Just a thought might been a pressure change that sent them scattered. Then I have also heard that saying wind from the west fish bite the best, winds from the east fish bite the least.

Well, this attitude is why you don't catch fish. No minners, no fish. I got the pros on my side on this issue.

I got out for a few hours this morning under bluebird skies and water temps of 66-67° and couldn't buy a bite. Spawn is over and they have
scattered! I went spur of the moment and didn't have minnows. Fished Road Runners and jigs under floats. Cane Pole is right about the minnows!

Ever since I caught my first fish on a lure, the challenge changed to finding the best lures that work under the toughest conditions or a majority of the time. I learned as much as I could over the years about fish biology - especially vision and vibration/ motion detection - as well as environmental factors that contribute to fish location and the bite. Just me I guess, but even if live bait always works once fish are found, I still wouldn't use it.

For me, the biggest part of fishing is the ongoing mystery of what they'll bite, why they bit it more often than other lure designs and how the other pieces of the puzzle fit together. Aside from that is the pleasure of disproving many of the experts and the fishing wisdom that many have swallowed over the years without asking questions, leading to the creation of my own truths based on many years of many different experiences.

If crossword puzzles were the same day after day, no way would I bother doing them. For me using live bait comes close to that.

At this time of year as the temp is fluctuating and yet to stabilize the fish will move quite a bit but usually stay generally close to where they will eventually spawn. The key to me would be the clear skies and not so much the water temp. Even if I was catching them shallow a few days earlier on a Blue bird day I would move out to the first big edge toward deeper water. The edge could be mud to sand, steep dropoff, shallow weeds where they end nearer deeper water. I would also fish close to the bottom, slow my retrieve and stop any extra action like jigging. All these things including a smaller bait will help.

Last time on the water had similar conditions. A buddy was fishing another spot when I got on fish. I called him over and he anchored close by. He was using nice minnows and i was using 1 inch plastics with straight tails. I caught 10 - 15 crappie in a half hour out of the two guys in that boat they caught 1. I told them to try a small jig, they stuck with minnows and had very little luck. Fish small and slow near an edge and I bet you will get on them good.

That would be my first thought, but failing to get bit there, I'd switch to the narrow flats either adjacent to faster drops or on flats with tree stumps or weed edges.

As was mentioned in many posts, plastics cover more water and can be worked using different presentations - big advantages over using live bait. Plus, I C&R 100 % of the time and rarely are my hooks in deep, allowing for a far lower mortality rate. Maybe not good for waters that have an overpopulation of smaller fish, but I'm not in any position to determine whether culling the population is the answer. Plus, the majority of undersized fish are illegal to keep anyway with trophy fish in a small minority in many waters.

The main reason I catch less fish on any given day I believe apply to most anglers:
1. unwillingness to move to and survey more areas or staying in one part of the lake, ignoring other areas
2. moving too much and not staying long enough in an area to use different lures and presentations ( I know of a few anglers that never carry or use anchors)
3. in regards to #2, not casting 360 degrees around the boat or 180 degrees from shore. Many fish I've caught were in shallow and adjacent deeper water and many times schooled in deeper water vs shallow.
4. staying with the same lures and presentations that haven't caught much or any fish which includes fishing lures too dang fast
5. not adjusting to a higher wind velocity usually results in always casting with the wind and missing out on surveying a maximal amount of water

Tunnel vision is you problem. Like I said, the National Champs aren't National Champs because of tunnel vision issues.

Good thing I never aspired to being a national anything much less a fishing champ. I'll take a 50 plus fish outing any day! It would be a rare day in h*** that I couldn't keep up with someone using live bait much less blow them away. One thing minner dunkers seem to always ignore : fish strike lures because lures are unnatural and much of the time provoke strikes having nothing to do feeding. But then again this is a discussion we've been having year after year, neither changing our opinions.

Your use of the term tunnel vision seems to apply to anglers that aren't versatile on any given day or ever, present company included. Claiming fish bite for any reason is sheer conjecture but consistently catching fish is supportive of any opinion regardless of bias.

Didn't get back in time to add to the last statement so here goes:
I've never insisted that my ideas should be taken as dogma or the last word - to each his own. My ideas stem from fishing successes and should be considered based on their own merit. If any angler finds those ideas helped improve their catch rate, my efforts were not in vain and the existence of one more open mind is evident, opening up even more doors. To ridicule one's position without any proof supporting an opposite position truly indicates a closed mind and a suspension from reality.

First, you basic point is meaningless to most on here, because Tourney Guys are Fishing for a LIMIT, and to get that, they only need a Certain Number Of BIG bites....they are not wanting huge numbers of fish like most of us.

Second, One of the reasons Crappie "Tournament" fishing is looked down upon, IS BECAUSE of the use of Live Bait, Multiple poles, and trolling/spider-rigging/long-lining!
In essence, no real input getting the fish to bite is from the fisherman...This is why the BIG $$ (dollars) are in other types of Tourney fishing that rely more on the Angler, 1 casting pole, and artificial bait...all of the input to get a fish to bite is performed by the Angler...due to different techniques, and his/her knowledge or his/her influence on an artificial bait.

Every "Professional" Fisherman should have an understanding of the target Species (Patterns, weather, depths, cover, structure, temps, etc.), Knowledge of Electronics, and boat Control....so what is left that makes A "Live Bait" Crappie Professional special?....is it being able to change to a fresh minner, or being able to sit and watch a pole tip twitch better?
Sponsors and Tourney Officials/Directors have said, that If Crappie "Professionals" would stop using live bait and "Non-Fishing" techniques, that the Sport would be able to grow and make more money..........all I can say, is that "Other" Species Fishermen are making ALOT more in Endorsements and Tourney Money...Food for Thought???

1. Can anyone fish a Crappie Masters tournament?
a. Yes. However, you must sign up for a Crappie Masters membership.

2. Do I signup for a membership prior to entering a tournament?
a. No. You can sign up for a membership and enter a tournament at the same time. Just choose which tournament you are fishing and the membership you want and click add to cart.

3. Can you fish without a partner?
a. Yes. You may fish with a partner or without. No more than 2 people in a boat. Mike Parrott won the national championship fishing alone in 2008.

4. Who will I be fishing against?
a. There are many different types of anglers teams and some that fish alone. Most teams are friends and family.

5. Will I be fishing against pros?
a. Depends on your definition of what a pro is? Many consider professional anglers to make a living only fishing. In other words, they are paid to fish and they fish all the time, therefore they have an advantage. This is not the case in crappie fishing. There are no paid professional teams. Crappie teams currently are working, self employed or retired from work.

6. What about those teams with fancy clothes and boats?
a. Some teams do have sponsored clothing to promote a sponsors product or services. These can be local sponsors where the angler lives or national sponsors that have placed them on their fishing team.
b. Some have shrink wrapped boats and/or vehicles. The anglers may be given entry fees and/or products for promoting a sponsor. Some may even receive a small amount of money to help with expenses. However we are not aware of a crappie team that makes their living through sponsorship at this time.

7. How do you enter a fishing tournament?
There are 4 ways to enter a tournament.
a. Print out the pdf entry form, fill out one from our magazine-trifolds or other print media and mail it in to Crappie Masters, Inc., P.O. Box 121, Clinton, MO. 64735
b. Enter online by going to the top menu…TOURNAMENTS to RULES-ENTRY FORM…read rules…at the bottom of page click on ENTER ONLINE. Choose your tournament and follow the instructions.
c. Come to the registration seminar early and enter the night before the tournament begins. See the tournament details page for locations for specific tournaments. Please note that some tournaments such as The Ultimate Challenge One Pole do not offer signup at the registration-seminar. It is always best to pre register for a tournament prior to the seminar night.
d. Call it in at 660-351-4187

8. Is there a late fee for registering late?
a. Yes. Normal late fee is $25.00 if not received or signed up 14 days prior to a tournament. Special tournaments can be up to a $50.00 late fee. See the tournament schedule for late fees for special tournaments. You avoid late fees by registering early.

9. What divisions are there in a Crappie Masters tournament?
a. All anglers and teams are competing in the same division for the same prizes. Addition divisions are Top Adult/Female team and Top Adult/Youth team. These teams can win additional prizes such as Gift Cards or sponsor products. We do hope to increase the prize per division as we can.

10. What happens at a Crappie Masters registration and seminar prior to a tournament?
a. Those that have preregistered will sign and pick up their voucher for the tournament. This voucher will be brought by the anglers to the weigh in line. Anglers that have not preregistered will do so then to get their voucher. Team will also get their ticket for door prize drawings.
b. Some seminars have banquets and some do not. If so, teams usually visit and eat prior to the beginning of the seminar. There is also sponsor literature out for learning about sponsors and their products/services.
c. The seminar is about going over sponsors, tournament rules and questions. If you do not understand something, this is the time to ask. We also do door prizes at the end of the seminar.

11. Do I have to attend the seminar?
a. Yes. One member of the team must be present for the entire seminar. If there is an emergency, you must let the tournament director know.

12. How do you qualify for the national championship?
There are three ways to qualify.
a. One is to place in the top 15 of any qualifying tournament or fish any 3 tournaments. Either a 1 day or 2 day tournament. We do bump down past those that are already qualified.
b. At each seminar you have the chance to enter into a drawing for free qualification (note: not a free entry). If you enter and win the drawing you are automatically qualified for the championship.
c. You can also qualify via points. Each team in a tournament is awarded points by where they placed in the points. The remaining championship spots are determined by points. We go down the list in the points standings bumping past those that have already qualified in other ways.
d. You can also qualify by fishing a club affiliated series of tournaments. Check out the crappie club in your area to determine how they will qualify anglers for the Championship.

Hmmmm Lets see here, Walleye trail, yep live bait and trolling multiple poles allowed. Catfish trail, yep live bait and multiple poles allowed. And the biggest $$$$$$$$ of any for fishing is Offshore Cups and guess what, yep trolling and live bait allowed. I don't think your arguement of that being valid. Maybe the point of it simple being a panfish with weights below 3lbs on average is the reason for low dollars as well as the typical lures, when used are what, $2.00 a pack for 15 baits or so. And yes crankbaits are the same as for bass, but pulling 1 around a lake or casting to cover ain't going to pay back large catches. It is simply a panfish and I do not ever think no matter what rules or stipulations are made it will ever become a multi million dollar trail. Cant argue the guys tourney fishing not spending money on boats or electronics, most are same or to a degree better equipped with electronics than many bass guys. Maybe not Van Dam or Iconelli and a few others, but the guys serious about Crappie have large investments in boats and electronics as well. I think it just comes down to being a panfish more than any other factors.

Do you really think that doing this will turn crappie tournaments into the BASS tour? The bass guys routinely use $25 crankbaits thrown on their "crankbait" rod (not to be confused with their drop shot rod, their shakey head rod, their spinnerbait rod, or their frog rod.)

Even with a "one rod, artificials only" rule, an inexpensive spinning outfit and a handful of jigs is all you would need.

At the BASS weigh-ins, they want the guys holding up the big bass. A pound and a half crappie or half pound bluegill won't get the same response.

Agreed. I just don't think the "BASS model" can be recreated with crappie, bluegill, etc.

Most other Sport-fishing, except for the Cat Guys, are trying to get away from Live Bait...this is from the 2016 OffShore Series...

Dead bait, lures and any combination thereof are permitted in this tournament. Live bait is NOT allowed in the tournament. Dead bait cannot be purchased during tournament fishing hours. Teams are allowed to purchase dead bait prior to the start of fishing.

It was estimated a few years back that Crappie fishing has passed Bass Fishing for number of fishermen and popularity...To be able to grow that popularity even more, Crappie Pros need to be able to reach more fans with shows, lures, and different techniques to showcase THEIR fishing skills...just like Bass Fishing guys do!

You can't tell me that none of these guys on this Website, wouldn't be excited to see huge weights of Slabs being brought in to the scales, and then would go right out and buy that SPOONMINNOW Custom lure that caught all of them!:)
That's something you could Market....market swimbaits for Crappie, Crankbaits for Crappie, Jigs for Crappie, small Craws for Crappie....then you get Artificial Lure Businesses involved....more line companies, rod and reel manufacturers, etc.

Believe it or not but many youngsters get turned off of Crappie Fishing because it is BORING to them....get them kids out there throwing a crank, swimbait, jig, rat-tail, etc.
We all know that there are many different ways we can catch Crappie with artificials and casting...IMHO, that is the only way to grow the Sport.

I've been trying to get Companies to market to the Crappie Crowd....they won't because of the Live Bait and Multiple pole rules!
Guys on here are using and buying the Keitech 2 or 3 inch "Bass" lures because they work...I know that Keitech has downsized some offerings because of that, but they still won't market them as Panfish lures here in the US...even though they are marketed as panfish lures in Asia.

It's Sad to see Wally fishing on his shows catching Big Slabs with Artificials and High Vis line....and then at the Big Tourneys guys are using minners....all it will take is for someone to Win a couple big ones with a Artificial and the change will begin!

I am pretty sure, could be wrong on this as I am just an old country boy. But I believe that Strike King, Midsouth Tackle, Southern Pro, Bobby Garland, Matrix, Bass Pro Shop, Arkie, Bandit, Bill Norman Lures, Mister Twister, Big Bite Baits, Charlie Brewer, and many more already market baits for Crappie. Lews, Bass Pro Shop, St Croix, BnM, and many more produce Crappie Rods and reels. It is a panfish and I do not ever think it will catch up to the Bass and Walleye guys for $$$$. No matter what rules are made. Like DBD said nothing impressive to a non Crappie fisherman about someone holding up a 1.5lb fish at weigh in. Heck even 3lb fish for that matter. And what are you suggesting is a non fishing technique? Might could use that arguement with game warden for not having a fishing liscense, honest officer I was spiderrigging not fishing. Give me a break, it has a rod, reel, line, and bait, your fishing. And no, I do not spiderrig, longline yes, livebait no. But I aint gonna call out someone that does use olive bait as not fishing. Dynamite maybe, pends on if I was handed a lit stick or not as to whether I would fish with dynamite.

Sad that a few believe that competitive fishing qualifies anglers for sainthood while at the same time reducing everyone else to local yokel status, clueless in all respects including ideas that work. Undeniably there are quite a few semi-pro anglers that end up near last place or in the middle of the pack, most having to retire after a few years of breaking the bank after winning nothing of note..... and they are considered good anglers!

Heck, I fished bass tournaments years ago in two clubs and usually finished in the top ten every every year, but I can't take all the credit because luck a the draw meant fishing with different boats, sometimes having to leave my boat at home. So in effect, luck played a big in my wins : the right partner, a well maintained boat and tow vehicle regardless of mine or my partner's, either anglers knowledge of tournament waters and experience at being able to find fish using sonar and different presentations and lures.

To suggest that I'm not on par with tournament anglers presumes I never was one and didn't qualify for our state's six man team. You know what they say about those that assume.

"Not catching" is boring. One of the reasons kids struggle with catching fish is that we feed them this BASS "artificial only" propaganda that they've gotta fish a "frog" on their "frog rod" to catch a fish.

Apart from the divergence from the main topic, many lakes fish different because of many reasons. Just because a lake is tough to catch fish or quality fish, the reasons are many. My own example:
Withing 20 miles of each other there are two lakes totally different in fish quality and quantity. Both are fairly easy locating and catching fish, but one has far more trophy fish and sustains schools more months of the year. In fact the larger of the lakes has a large predator fish population that feed on crappie and perch, yet those prey species are in great supply.

The other point - how do you do on a hot summer day in water over 80 degrees regardless of the water fished? I do fine!

I didn't take me a lifetime to learn to catch crappie and I don't need much equipment to fish . My tackle box is a white basket. I ain't no expert and never claimed to be. Any and all this stuff is a source of convenience to me. In fact, have a big pond in my front yard for convenience.

Same here.

Ky rigging minners on Big Sandy deep brush and drops does just fine in hot weather. Just gotta crank em up slow. You just gotta have the skill level to KY rig.

Kids in their teens Struggle with sitting and watching a bobber or waiting for a pole to twitch, most kids nowadays are needing more stimulation and activity...get them standing up and casting a lure and they are more involved and are less bored!

I teach kids to throw lures of all kinds...no propaganda here...and they don't struggle to catch fish...I teach them how to throw a crank, swimbait, curly tail, etc., on any pole they bring. Then they go teach others.
Just allowing kids to live bait fish is limiting them and not allowing them to spread out and decide what's best for them...I bet 90% would stay fishing artificials...maybe more!
Some people just enjoy the "Art" of artificial fishing, and all that goes with it...some people want something else...For me, fishing artificials is cheaper, easier, and I still catch all kinds of fish all year long!

What about fish that rarely hit artificials? Can you catch catfish on artificials? Yes, but bait will produce much better. Personally, I love to fish for carp. Artificials for carp are usually a complete waste of time.

Using artificials only is limiting them. Using spinning tackle only is limiting them. Casting only is limiting them. Variety is the spice of life, and it helps your overall fishing ability, too.
