anyone hitting it yet..be there the first week of trout hope the crappie and eyes are biting
Heard reports from the warm spell a few weeks ago. I was out last Sunday 3/20 and didn't see another boat. Only managed 1 perch, 1 gill.
Fished the south end out of Jamestown today for a few hours. Didn't even mark a fish let alone catch one. Checked a dozen spots too. Headed north next time I go up.
I fished the south last year and did pretty well.. I went out of Jamestown, and fished around the islands. I am new at this crappie fishing! anyone have any advice where to look if I can't get them around the islands? I only run a 14 ft alum with a 9.9 so public launch would help if the north end is a good shot.
Hoping by the 19th they will start hitting good..been years since I fished open water there
I am headed up on the 22 and then again on the April 30-may3.. If I hit them I will post online.. Does anyone know a good baitshop in the Jamestown area by the way? Last year during our yearly camp/fishing trip the baitshop we used didn't give us much advice when we asked where to catch eyes. (Wouldn't even give us a starting point) We fished eyes for a full day, only landing a few.. the second day we asked the baitshop owner where the crappie spots were or to point us in a direction.. He responds by saying he picks them up here and there, never in numbers.. After that response he goes on to tell us he limited in walleye the day before and wouldn't give us an area. I talked to a group at the dock and they explained where to catch crappie and where the walleye were at.. I don't expect anyone to give me their honey holes, but responses like try brush piles/stumps for crappie or ledges for eyes would have worked.. You guys ever fish Lake Erie for perch or eyes pm me and I will tell you where to go for the Bite.
I hear they are considering lowering the limit and putting size restrictions on the crappie..making it 20 for a limit plus 9" length minimum. .
I did hear that as well, to be quite honest I don't think it's a horrible idea.. We all know some people just get to excited, and keep every fish they can until their 55 gallon drum is filled.. (Little exadurated, but you get the point).. Take a look at lake simcoe in Canada prior to the perch transportation limits.. I remember family coming back from there in the mid 90's with 5 full coolers packed to the top with perch.. (I know environmental factors play a huge role of fish population, but I don't think that helps- took the perch years to recuperate size and numbers).. When you have excellent fishing for a species, I feel like conservation and protecting the species is important.. I enjoy my yearly trips to pymatuming and catching a few fish, if i was not for catching a few I wouldn't go there.
I would like to see a 25 fish limit put on the lake. Size doesn't matter as we don't want only small fish there. Over population could probably take place there if all the biggest fish are taken and only leaving the littler ones to spawn. This lake has been producing great numbers of crappies as long as I can remember and I've been fishing it since the 60's. Can still go up and catch 50 a day from May to January when I find them. But like I stated, 25 per person per day, is a good limit.
Man chaunc that gives me hope! Before I started researching crappie fishing I thought the spring spawn hit and after that the fish said "talk to ya" and were impossible to catch.. I fished the crappie and perch in the spring/fall and eyes in the summer.. I will have to arrange a few more long weekends down there this summer.. Do you ever fish the crappie at night with a light in the water?
I knew that the massive die off a few years was going to hurt the lake.
It's easy to catcah a good 20 keeper fish over 9 inches just about any where on the lake. So a limit wouldn't be hard. I don't fish for the crappies at Pymie like I use to. Maybe once or twice a year during open water season.
You could tell by the lack of fish caught during the ice season that the population of crappies have been in a downward sprial for the last 5 years or so.
I guess the fish commission is having an open discussion relating to a crappie limit at one of the local highschools on the 19th. I believe I seen conneaut highschool at 6 or 630. Guess time will tell.
Read the new NWPA report, Darl has info on all the different species at several lakes in it.
Next Friday I am headed to pymatuming, eyes or crappie is the question? My plan is crappie first and if I find some I will just stay with them.. This weeks forecast should creep up into the mid 60's hopefully low 70's a few days so I may stay all day.. If anyone has a report let me know. I will report back after my trip.
How did you do at Pymy? I went out of Linesville today and did pretty good. Lots of crappies and gills but no eyes. Jig and bobber worked best. Only used three minnows.

Headed there tomorrow, hopefully the cold front doesn't hurt the fishing. Headed out of Jamestown I think.
Fished out of wilson
Ic. Never really fished that end of the lake.. I am going to hit up the islands on the south end. I will let you guys know how I do. I'm assuming you hit them in the shallows, in stumps?
Around the island. .every root has them...fishing off of new comers beach...3 perch..
Another great day Thursday. Fished with my handicapped neighbor in the same area. Same technique.

Had a great Friday, fished thru the afternoon rain and managed to put 35 good crappies and two big perch in the bucket.. Everytime a minnow hit the water a crappie was caught.. I tried to use a few chartreuse jigs tipped with a maggot and ended up landing 3 that way. Caught a 13.75 and a 14.25 inch crappie. So even though I've never measured them in the past, I have a huge fish to beat. Most fished ranged from 9-12 inches. If I can figure out the whole picture thing, I will throw some pics up.
