fuel tank issues

Traded my Tracker for a Xpress. Express had a 2 stroke motor, mine is a 4 stroke. Tank that came in the boat was oil/gas mix. Drained it all out, put in 3 gallons of my 'old' unmixed gas, sloshed it around, let it set, and drained it out. Still looked like a little gas/oil mix. Put in new gas, ran the boat. My 50 Yam has fewer than 10 hours on it and in great condition. Ran good goin out, but sluggish come back in. Checked plugs. Black and with a little moisture. Will oil leach into new gas from the old plastic tank??... and what are my solutions? New tank? Thanks guys....I know my answer is here.

As much as I know plastic is a petroleum product. Don't know about leaching, I have a 1 gallon plastic can that I swap gas and gas oil mix all the time.
Did you change fuel lines?

The fuel line from the motor to the 'different' tank were ok when we changed them over. Shud I change fuel lines and plugs? But what do I do if the gas STILL looks like oil mix when I check it AFTER changing lines and plugs? I'm right back where I started from, right?? There might be some sediment In the bottom of the oil/gas mix tank that keep releasing into my new clean fuel. I'm definitely confused as to how to eliminate this issue.

I wouldn't think that a little bit of oil in the gas would hurt it.

Yeah....neither did/do I, but it sure fowled the plugs, and didn't run a smooth comin in as it did goin out. What is it doing to the injectors? I put in some sea foam, but don't know if that helps/hurts this particular situation. I just want it right, and don't know what to do.

Jimmy, don't think it would hurt the injectors. Do you have a inline water seperator or filter under the cowl on right side of motor. If it does it should have a screw on clear plastic bowl. If it does remove and clean that. It's going to catch any trash before it gets to injectors. That SeaFoam should help cut that oil. I suspect previous owner mixed his own oil and gas and probably overdid it. And if you used the old line on boat it had residue in it. That fresh gas is going to cut that out and pick it up. It should burn most of it out pretty quick. I would run it good a time or two then I would install a new set of plugs. Just don't panic yet:biggrin

Whew...thanks Cray. I do have a separator and I'll ck that out. I've got sea foam in it so that should help the issue. Is there anything better than sea foam I should consider?

If there is anything better than SeaFoam I have never heard of it. Biggest thing is I have never heard of it damaging a motor. Been using it since the mid 60's. You might try pulling the plugs and just brushing them off lightly with a fine wire brush if you have one. I use one that you can find at lowes or Home Depot around the solder. Real fine wire.

that tiny little bit of oil is not the issue, moisture could be.

Some great advice guys. Thanks a bunch. Put 5 gal of non-eth gas, a can of sea foam in her yesterday, and hitting the water this week end. Ill clean the plugs first, then maybe change them when I get home Sunday. That ought to fix the issue without much addl expense. Thanks again for all the input. Greatest site goin, fur sure.

Lucas gas treatment and seafoam add to high octane gas and ride an hour or so guaranteed!!!!!

I put Lucas gas treatment in everything it will add 1-2 mpg on any vehicle after a couple of tanks!!!!!
