I'm new to the site so forgive me if this was asked already. But which type of plastic lure does every prefer? Curly tail grub, tubes, paddle tails etc.
Thanks

:welcome Welcome to the site from South Central Mississippi. Whichever the fish likes best. You need a few of them all. You will never know when they might quit biting one. So you will need to try a different type or even color. Even the way you present it may need to change say a fast retrieve to a slow one or vise versa.:twocents
Swimbaits and plastics....from my signature.
I still think Z-man has the best plastic on the market....their Curly tail is fantastic and beside being indestructible, it even moves at Super slow speeds...since it floats.
I was just given some Z-man BIG Swimbaits to try on my 3 week vacation to Florida in July. We'll be doing alot of ocean fishing and I wanted something tougher.
Curly tail grub if I had to choose one. Push em, pull em, cast em, and even vertical jig them. Will catch small and big fish from baby bluegill to striped bass! Lots of color combos fir them also. Fresh or saltwater, they produce!
Tube
Wally Marshall Shadpole and Slabalicious for large presentation! Katlin curly tails for small presentation.
Probably curly tail
If you have been in a boat with someone else, sitting on a spot loaded with fish. And they are catching a fish on every cast , and you can't catch anything. And they just turn and smile at you once in a while. And you scramble through your lures tieing on one after the other and maybe finally find something that catches one now and then. But the other guy is still catching em on nearly every cast, after a while you need to swallow your pride and say " give me one of those things".
I have been the guy watching, and I have been the guy catching. And I have seen it change from not only day to day but hour to hour.
Buy an assortment of everything. An constantly experiment. If you get on a hot lure that is slaying em on some lake trip after trip for say three or four times. And then you go and do the same thing and they won't bite. Well you just figure" man they ain't biting today", "and I know cause I been catching em,and if they don't bite this then they are just shutdown."
When you may have tied on something else and caught something. Or changed location and bait and caught something. I keep trying things until I find something that seems to totally fool the fish, one they don't short strike,or follow to the boat. I want one they are smacking hard and quick when it gets to them.
Somedays you don't figure it out. But the more you do,the more you will.
Stinger tail shad type plastics for me ... since I mostly cast & "push" jigs. (like a "Shadpole", "Slabanator Shad Body" or "Panfish Assassin Tiny Shad")
Second to that would be the "boot tail/paddle tail" style. (like a "Slabalicious", or "Charlie Brewer Slider Grub")

Mo's grubs to match my painted heads. but I've been getting my plastics from the guys on here.
I like to have some of everything just in case but I catch more fish on stinger type baits like Bobby garland. Also marabou jigs are probably my second favorite.
STINGER,HANDS DOWN .
Crazy Angler Slab Bandits and Southern Pro Hot Grubs are my first 2 choices, in order...
Charlie Sliders and the Matrix Shad matrix mini they are some kind awesome for sure !!!!
Swimming a jig whether trolling or casting I prefer Southern Pro Hot Grubs or Charlie Brewer Sliders, Vertical fishing or under a cork Southern Pro Tubes of various styles and sizes.
1. Paddle Tail grubs (Charlie Brewer's Slider Grubs specifically)
2. Tubes
If I am not casting to cover then I am vertically jigging or fishing a jig under a bobber. Truth be told I prefer a marabou jig to tubes but that isn't plastic.
Midsouth super jig
Two inch curly tail grub on a roadrunner head. Every heard your son say he's tired of catching fish? Happens.
Welcome aboard!
Every situation/seasonal period is different. You definitely should carry a selection of each type of plastics and let the fish tell you what they want on any given day.
However, as of the past 3 seasons, I've been straying away from curly tails and tubes more & more; and going for my stinger/straight tailed plastics instead. I particularly like the Bobby Garland Baby Shads, but brand doesn't usually guarantee you anything. I just find that this general body design produces more consistently in most weather/water conditions.
And, if I go to an action tail, chances are pretty good it will be be a Charlie Brewer's Slider Grub (paddle tail design). These too, seem to produce more than the curly tails as of late. Best advice: get a selection of each type in various colors and if you are not catchin' start switchin'. :)
Thank You Everyone for you replies. I finally got out and caught a few. I got them on a shad body with a curly tail. Two on two cast and then nothing, but it was sure nice to get them on artificials. I surely will be picking up some other types of lure that you all mentioned
small paddle tails seem to work for me. Been using these lately... Matrix Mini"BlueHorizon" - Matrix Shad
not affiliated with them, just like their baits for both fresh water and saltwater marsh fishing...
Here's pretty much my crappie arsenal. I am not a curly tail or tube jig fan. I prefer small 1.75 - 2" baby shad/ stinger type solid bodies, but I have caught lots of crappie in the last year or so on Crappie Magnet split tail bodies.

I definitely prefer 1/16 oz jig heads with sickle hooks. I found a guy on eBay who offered some pretty powder coated heads and they're just too pretty to use :). I mainly use the old unpainted bullet lead heads, but here's what's tied on my jig pole right now.

Caught some good crappie in this jig yesterday morning.....1/16 oz silver painted head with a #4 size gold sickle hook loaded up with a 2" Kalins Tennessee Shad color Triple Threat Baby Shad. They're deadly, but getting hard to find!
If you have any particular questions, send me a pm. GTT
Best is a relative term it seems to me .... what I like best is whatever they want when I am there ...
I really like Go Go minnows , slab bandits , Thermocline lures, Arkie tubes and sexy shad and an assortment of other items ....
I try different profiles and colors until I find the higher percentage item for that day in that spot
Just curious GoTenn. Do you happen to fish a lot of clear water? Ditto on the Kalins Tennessee Shad Triple Threat. I always start with that and a white 1/16 oz. jighead. The lake I fish is clear, clear, clear.
One lake I fish is very clear and we catch most of the crappie over brush tops. Another of my favorite lakes is stumpy and the water is not so clear. I usually have better luck on that lake with the black night Bobby's.
I just looked at unclejosh.com and the Kalins Triple Threat 2" shad without the curly tail has been discontinued. An email I got said that I should try to find what I can in bait shops, etc, but there will be no more made. :(
GTT
I have and use a little bit of everything just depends on what the fish are wanting. I use the southern pro umbrella tubes alot but here lately I have been using mostly bobby garland, they have some awesome baits.
Hot grubs for long and short lining. Bobby garlands for casting and slow trolling.
"Pushing" jigs (to me) is simply using long rods, added weights, a jig on a leader, and moving at more than 0.5mph .... which, in my case is three 14' rods with 1/2oz or 3/4oz weights above my jigs.
The general consensus is that if you're using weights + rods are out the front of the boat + you're moving at a faster speed than you would if you were "Spider Rigging" ... then you're "pushing". If the rods are out the side or back, and everything else is the same ... then you're "pulling".
I favor the stinger shad style bodies because I can use them in most any of the methods of fishing that I generally use : pushing, casting, jigging, dock shooting.
BTW ... your La. brothers got Slabeye to make a whole set of Slabanator jig bodies in Louisiana colors & combos:
The Louisiana line.......saint......cosmic Blast.....spicy chicken........Cajun.......ragin cajun..........bayou tiger

And I've done good on Cosmic Blast, way up here in KY :biggrin
