Test on the new Southern Crappie SCR143T poles

I got some Southern Crappie Rods SCR143T trolling rods a couple of weeks ago. We spider rigged with them last week with 5/8 oz weights over a 1/8 oz jighead. There was very little bend in the rods. I wanted to try them with heavier weights. Ed says they are rated for 2 oz of weight. I put 2 oz weights on some and 3 oz on others with very small deep runner crankbaits on KY Lake yesterday, a typical "pushing set-up that many folks do on a regular basis. The pics below show the pole with 3 oz on the left, 2 oz on the right. Keep in mind there were cranks on these rather than jigs or roadrunners which would not load the poles up nearly as much as the cranks. Both pics were taken with the boat moving at 0.9-1.0mph.

No. But neither did anything else I tried. Rickie did get one on a planer board rig. Water conditions were really bad. Still a nice way to waste a few hours on a nice day, something we haven't seen many of lately.

Looks good..I have the standard 14's..is there any noticeable difference in the weight of the rods? Thx

I'm sure the 143T weight is slightly heavier but not noticeable. The action is noticeably heavier.

Shoot, dux .... I can see that just from the pics :Rofl Those rods don't load up near as bad as my PST & Capps/Coleman 14' rods with 3/4oz weights & a crank (@ 0.8-1.2mph) ... let alone having a 2oz weight strapped on it and going 1.8mph (like most do up here) !!

Might have to see about investing in a few of them to use for pushing (& use my other 14'ers for slower/lighter weight trolling methods, like Spider Rigging jig/minner rigs or slow trolling Roadrunners).

I've got a 10ft I bought from Mr Ed. Nice jiggin pole. My next 14 footers will be southern crappie

I just ordered 8 of eds 16' poles hopefully when they get here the water will be in better shape and can try em out.

Have some on the way. Are they as sensitive as the other 14 footers?

We caught some dinks last week with the 143Ts that couldn't have been over 6 inches long and detected every strike from them. I'm not saying they are as sensitive as the regular Southerns but plenty so for all the types of fishing I will do.

Thanks mrdux, that was a very informative post for those of us who use Southern poles. Ed Duke is the best. I like his keep it simple approach. "D"

I order two of them Doug waiting for them to arrived. Ed said they was good for long lining too.

So would these poles be classified as good choices for spider rigging, long lining, vertical jigging? In other words....a good all-around rod?

I like a slower tip for longlining and vertical jigging like the action of the regular Southern rods. These are the berries for pulling and pushing cranks and spider rigging.

How long of a leader line and lb. test do you run from the weight back to the crankbait when pushing this set up?

I was using the same Okuma Magda 15s I pull cranks with and 12 pound Trilene Big Game Solar 12 pound test down to the sinkers. I use 6 pound Viscious leader about 3 feet back to a swivel and the crank.

I purchased the rods in hopes of being sensitive enough to pick up slight pecks/bumps but have more backbone. Am I going to have buyers' remorse if this was my goal?
