Southern Crappie Rods new SCR143T ---trail by fire

I got in some of Ed's new trolling weight rods, SCR143Ts, this week. Today was the 1st time I have had a chance to try them out. Quackrstackr and I went out on KY Lake this morning to do some spider rigging, not my specialty by far. We caught a few fish but spent a good amount of time hung up in structure, giving the rods a true trial by fire. A couple of times we let the rod tip get almost under the boat before pulling it loose. They performed as good or better than I expected. They are very close to the regular SCR143s in feel but the action is somewhat heavier. Tim and I were both really pleased with them. Tim said his only complaint was they belonged to me instead of him.

Are they newer version of His 14ft poles?

I've been on the fence about gettting some of the heavier ones, I just bought some of the regular 14 ft rods and love them so far. How much weight were you using? I typically run just under 1 ounce of weight on the regular ones.

Yea, it has a little longer handle and a little heavier action rated for 2 ounces.

I was running a 5/8 oz weight above a 1/8 oz jig head. I was using a regular Southern Crappie 12 footer next to the 14s. There was about twice the bend in the 12 footer as the 14s. I didn't run any heavier weight on the 14 footers but it sure seemed like they are set up for more weight than the regular Southern Crappies but still very sensitive to light bites.

I feel like my 12' Slab Shaker graphite rods will break if they get hung up on brush and I try to pull them loose. What is the best way to get un-hung without breaking rod tip?

Point the rod straight at the point where the line goes into the water and put a constant pull on the line. It will either break or pull loose. That takes some learning to do with the long rods. I can almost assure you any rod can be broken by pulling against the full rod on a hangup.

Had a really exciting fishing trip this last Saturday; I finally got my new Southern Crappie Rods in the water for the first time. I bought 4 of the SCR143T 2 oz. and 4 of the regular SCR143 so far I believe I'm going to love em. I'm brand new to this type of fishing and this is my first time out so I can't give you any comparisons, as with everything there will be a learning curve. Just putting the rods out, rigging them and then de-rigging and taking them back in was quite time consuming especially for a newbie working alone. I hope I can find some short cuts or get some tips on this, in the meantime I'll just have to factor in an extra 2 hours, one putting out and one for taking up. Well next time won't be quite as bad since part of that time did go to adjusting the Hi-Tek holders.

Shouldnt take 2 hrs, I fish alone 80% of the time, I dont break my poles down, just strap them to the deck and store them on the ceiling of my garage, You should pre-tie your rigs ahead of time too, keep them on a pool noodle, I have a 5 gallon bucket dedicated to storing my rigs, took a magic marker and labled the ends of the noodles so I would know what size weights are on each piece of noodle. Just remember the bucket or you will be need 2 hours to tie more at the ramp, not that I have done that or anything, lol

Well it probably wasn't 2 hours but it defiantly felt like it, my toon stays on the water so for now I'll have to keep breaking the rods down until I can come up with a way to secure them to the hardtop. I do like the idea of the 5 gallon bucket and pool noodles for the rigs, how do you tie your rigs, and what type and lb. of line are you using for them.
