Saw a flefly video a couple weeks ago and they were catching them in Spring River. I would imagine you could find them in the creek mouths by now.
Id like to know about the Sand Bass bite as well.
Two Great grandson fished Rocky Point yesterday afternoon in very high winds. No sand bass, two black bass one 13" & 15" and one 10" black crappie.
My Bradford Pear tree bloomed out last week and normally that's my call to hit a test spot on Chouteau Creek that gives me pretty good yearly indication on the sandies. Normally if I see no shad movement I give them a week and a half and go back and slaughter them. If I see some shad movement it normally takes about a week and they are hitting hard. Once they hit hard for 4 or 5 days after that I then leave Chouteau Creek and grab all the buckets, Ice chests or anything that will hold fish and hit the mouth of Pryor Creek all the way up to Low Water. Well this year the creek was hopping with shad about 5 days ago and still haven't slaughtered them. Only thing I can think of is that the overnight temp's are still getting to low. This weeks of rain surely won't help!
Thanks Jason- I have 4 grandsons coming soon to spend their spring break with us and so I'm interested in the SB runs. Have to admit I'm glad for an excuse to chase those hard fighting little fish- they are fun to catch!
In my opinion they are the closes as far as taste to a Crappie then any other fish. But I also like ketchup in my brown beans, so who I'm I to say!
I was around the Arkansas River at Kaw Saturday and didnt see anyone fishing the river for Sandies so its safe to say they haven't started up north.
That is the saying which is why I need to start hitting the rivers and creeks for the sandies as my crappie skills are lacking. I have fished Kaw twice for crappies this winter with zero luck. I see people catch the crappies and I cant so I just accepted I stink at crappie fishing haha.
During the run try a 3-5 wt flyrod with a Clouser Minnow. What fun!
this warm rain predicted to be 1" and temps in the mid 70's this weekend should really turn them on in the creeks.
I kinda hate fishing the creeks on kaw when its good. So many boats on every stob that you can walk across them without getting your feet wet. Not my style to anchor and put out a bobber. I'll do it if necessary, but usually its not.
I'd be interested to hear your method on this as this has certainly not been my experience. In my house, sandies are relegated to blackened fish tacos and other spiced up fare while the crappie are reserved for pan frying. If you can make a sand bass taste like a crappie....please tell me how!
Remove the red meat off of the fillet helps considerably.
I agree with cricket george; trim/cut out only the white meat from the fillet and do not take any of the darker strip (blood line). Seeing as how there is no limit on size or quantity it don't hurt to take a few more fish if needed since your keeping a smaller portion of the fillet. I have taken sandies and crappies cut them both to about same size pieces fried'em up served them in the same bowl and no one could tell the difference.
exactly. just remove the red meat and it's good stuff. Texture isn't exactly the same as crappie so I can tell because of that. We love it though.
As stated above by others, I make sure to remove the red meat. Then I soak it in milk over night and use jiffy mix with some lawry seasoning salt and a little garlic salt and fry it up in a frying pan. Besides the texture the taste difference isn't noticeable. Sometimes I will even soak it in salt water before draining and soaking in milk.
Sand bass has a different consistency than crappie.
We love to grill sand bass, but crappie falls apart on the grill.
Heading out to Keystone this weekend, to check to check on the Sand Bass and to see if we can get on some Crappie. I will let yall know how we do.
My thoughts exactly on using sand bass. When fried and de-redmeated, I just don't notice the richness that crappie has. So I just don't put forth the effort and enjoy my grilled cilantro, lime or blackened fish tacos! Make sure and garnish with come fresh coleslaw and fresh cilantro too.
I'm hoping to find some sand bass this year as well. I have a 4 year old that I need to get into some to get her hooked on fishing. She likes fishing already, but I know she will be my fishing buddy for life if I can get her into some cast after cast action! Any tips or areas I could take her anywhere in eastern oklahoma would be much appreciated. I have a boat or I can do bank, either is fine.
Went today for about 30 minutes even though I knew better. We got just under a inch of rain, so I was hoping for the best. Muddy water and the wind didn't play well. A few little one's and a branch was it.
If the weather cooperates this weekend I might try my luck below Pensacola.
They're starting their run. A buddy sent me a pic of 8-10 bigguns and one medium sized one. Time to make the move.
Is that up north? I'll be at grand lake next week and was thinking of taking some poles to let the kids fish but have never been there before.
Grand Lake area, yes.
Thanks hope you guys hammer them
By Pensacola I am referring to the dam. So I will be below grand lake.
I fished big cabin creek this morning with no luck. I spoke to a few well seasoned veterans to the area and they seem to think they have already spawned out. Nobody was catching anything. I think it might have to do with the cold front.
I have talked to some game wardens and they're telling me that the water isn't warm enough yet but it should be turning in a week or two. I was at Hudson's low head dam earlier in the week and talked to some guys in a boat who only caught 15 or so between themselves and they had been out all day. People on the bank were catching a few but they weren't large or particularly aggressive. I fished for two hours and caught one small one. Elsewhere on Gibson I've fished Blue Bill and Flat Rock and no one is doing anything of any merit there, either. I kinda think that the weather is gonna have to settle down and get a little warmer before they really turn on. But, I may be wrong.
I know a few places seem to be going good now and a few other places havent started yet so I doubt they have already spawned out. Probably a week or so away from the rivers and creeks really getting good everywhere
Apparently the spring river is on fire now. Has anyone heard anything about the river on ft Gibson?
If you ever wanted some straight up fun
It's trolling for them in the summer here
Have literally caught 100's in a day
I have a 64 starcraft with 50 Honda tiller that is murder trolling rig
I'm chomping at the bit to go catch some fish, but the wind is freaking ridiculous. I've never bank fished at the low water dam, but I'm not wanting to deal with the wind in my boat.
