What's your favorite brand and color curly tail? I mostly fish Bobby Garlands and Panfish Assassins. I was just looking for something to maybe put off a little more vibration or thump because sometimes I cast jigs from the bank at night. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I've used some Kalins triple threat in the summer time wade fishing... As far as body goes southern pro hot grubs are very similar right? Anyone use Kalins 2" lunker grubs?

What color power grub do you like... I just so happen to have some of those I use in the river... I have that milky speckled color, black, chart, white, pumpkin chart, smoke, and christmas lights... I have a ton of Kalins colors too just haven't fished any curly tails for crappie... It's more of my smallie, bluegill, and redeye bait... I might throw some in my bag to try but didn't know if I was missing a better grub
Z-Man curly tails are amazing, and they have all different sizes...The year before last, I caught over 400 Crappie on 1 glow in the Dark curly tail...I would have caught more but I lost the Curly tail in the rocks.
The Z-Man plastic floats, is almost indestructible, and the action is excellent...since it floats, the tail has action even at SLOW retrieves!
That Zman grub you are referring to was glow bone color? They have some great colors! Thank you
Southern Pro Hot Grubs are my 2" curl tail of choice. Bad Blood, Acid Rain, Bumble Bee, Black/chartreuse, blue/chartreuse, bubble gum/chartreuse, Acid Rain/junebug are my most used colors. A step up in size and you have Bobby Garland Stroll'Rs another great bait.

Right now, and always looking at what hits the market, is the Southern Pro Hot Grubs in popsicle and several others that I've had so long i can't remember the name. These have a slimmer body and a thinner tail that gives good action at slower speed. The Kalin's triple threat also get a lot of play. A green and silver body and a clear/glitter tail is one everyone needs in their box. It might not be a super winner every time but over the years I have caught more species on that one tail than any other I have owned, and that's quite a few. This also fits into my needs for action at slow speed. To me, if a tail don't turn til it's really cooking, the designer needs to up his game. Hard baits don't curl and they tear easy. I have the Stroller, Slabilicious, Slider and several others that are still showing their worth and I'll comment on them when I've used them some more. I' leaning towards the jelly looking colors and not the opaque versions, I'm just sayin........
I like Southern Pro and Kalins the Kalins is a lot softer bait than most and has a lot of action on a slower retrieve. My favorite colors are Fire&Ice ;Kentucky lake killer; Bleeding Tennessee Shad; Black&Red/Chart; Black/Chart; Electric chicken; Lemon Meringue these baits are good for all species of fish. I fish several other brands which also work great sometimes I fish the best price.
Not a Pro,not trying to sell,these that have been mentioned or great catch fish grub's.Hard to beat Mister Twister grub's in the pearl glow,2 & 3 in.Equally as good maybe better is Arkie"s grubs 2nd to none tails work setting still try that with any other grub. Just give them a try Arkie grub's plastic's.
If I'm casting I like a 2 inch triple ripple. Over 60 colors to choose from.
I seldom use curly tails when crappie fishing. Those Go-Go minnows are deadly on white bass. If you ever fish for those monster whites on the Sabine river you will find that the Big Bite orange curly tails are deadly.Quote:

Ones already mentioned, plus I like using kalins 3" triple threat grubs and Zoom makes good 2" n 3" curlies. If you think your grubs are to stiff or hard, place them in a paper towel and microwave them for 5-15secs depending on how much metal flake is in it. Makes them really flexible and soft!
Though I don't use curly tail grubs, if I did I would likely start with these : https://sites.google.com/site/slaban...b-twister-link .... they're made locally & by a friend & site member sponsor. And since they have worked well for those that DO use them, and because the Shad Body (stinger shad style) has worked well for me ... I think they would work well, too.
Personally, I'd likely use a boot tail grub under those circumstances .. something like the 2" Slabalicious or 1.5" Charlie Brewer Panfish Grub. And since I've done well at night with a regular Roadrunner, I may well pair either of the two together.

I will give you two I just started using . One is the Strike King 2" shadpole curlytail in Monkey shine color. It's a larger profile bait that requires a good size hook to make solid hook ups.But it matches the profile of shad that fish feed on a lot.
The other is a Big Bite Baits 2" triple tip grub in Black and opaque chartreuse. Both these baits have a specific shade of chartreuse that just work's under certain conditions .
The shadpole CT in monkeyshine has worked in all colors of water really well.
The triple tip I fished a couple times last fall in clear water and didn't do well with it. But Monday I was fishing in some 48 degree murky water casting over a grass bed that had feeding shad on it. And the bass and crappie were hitting that thing as fast as I could throw it,boated about thirty fish in a hurry before the shad moved. Had two crappie went 14".

Get some curly tails of almost any brand in a smoke glitter color.And just keep trying them and you will eventually have some outings with them you will wear some fish out. They also work good on a 1/32 roadrunner head,also the sliders in this color good too. They will become a confidence bait for you .
These baits are primarily for casting into feeding active fish.
i use a lot of green orange white black brown. im not as much a believer in color as i am in size, depth, and speed. been fishing curly tails since about 76 and never looked back. lol i can remember barely being able to reach over the pontoon railing as a kid. can hear gramps like it was yesterday," cast it out and count to 10, then reel in slow". that old black and white zebco33 rests at the bottom of the Apalachicola river, Blountstown florida. lolQuote:

I have taken a liking to the cabelas brand in the purple/chart combination, it might be called opaque chart
I haven't done very well with the Cabelas brand yet. Bought a couple colors that no one else has with no success to date. I have the purple/char you're talking bout. Will have to fish it with more confidence.
Southern pro. Had luck on tons of colors, but the most catches would probably be on Weiss Lake Killer. Of course, depends on the lake and water. Other than that, other hot colors are blue/black/chart, junebug/chart, bubblegum/chart, acid rain/junebug.
Kalins acid rain or John Deere
My hands down favorite is the Arkie 2.5" XL Pro-Model Curltail Minnows. Plenty of action. The color Dace has produced the best for me.

Wow so many good suggestions to choose from... Maybe I should be trying my Kalins that are in my river vest
try everything you already have until you're sure they don't work, then start adding on until you find one you're confident in. By the time you find that ONE you'll have enough bait to start your own store, ask me how I know, :RoflQuote:

So, the first requirement is action, for me a plastic has to MOVE, SWIM, VIBRATE, at every speed...the action has to be consistent when it is "Burned" or BARELY MOVING!
Most Curly Tails have GOOD action at fast or moderate retrieval speeds, but they also die at slow speeds...if a curly tail loses action at slow speed (which almost all do), IMHO, it is worthless...Most time for Crappie the slow speed movement is required to solicit a bite.
In my quest to be efficient and lower the amount of plastic that I buy, I try to purchase plastics that can be used in many ways, and that covers all the facets of my fishing.
There are a few plastic Curly tails out there that will move when barely moved, I like curly tails that float. If they float, they are way less dense than water...being less dense than water means that any water movement will make them move...then look at durability...some of the most amazing plastic I have ever used is the Z-Man ElaZtech...if they would improve on their swimbait designs I would be using more of them also! When you can catch hundreds and hundreds of fish on 1 curly tail, your cost to fish ratio CANNOT BE BEAT! Those daggone things don't tear, slide off a jig, or wear out...most times I lose them first!
Do yourself a favor and buy a pack and try other Curly tails with them, then decide what's best for your fishing
