what is the best velixar unit for the money for the guy that only gets to go icefishing now and then.
would I be better off getting a aqua-vu scout from ebay than the velixar, because the place we ice fish are not over 15-18' deep and I could use it other times off the year compared to the velixzar.
I have both cam,. and vex.. Trust me you will be way better off with the vex. and you can use it all year long too if you chose. That said you can get by with a fl-8 but I'd highly recommend going with an fl-18.Cam. are highly dependent on clear water vex. aren't.
For going every once in a while,I'd recommend a Vexilar FL-8:D
Simple to read,yet affordable.:D :D
Either way when you can have a real time locator in your arsenal ,you'll be in more fish more often.
what is the difference between the velixar 8, 12, 18, and 20?
Features,and price.You get what you pay for.:D
Hit my link & go to Vexilar to see all of the differences.
I have an FL-8. Wouldn't go icing with-out it. The 18 has more bells and whistles that may not be that useful to a guy who only ice-fishing occationally. I fish alot on ice and even use it in my boat and am quite happy with the FL-8 for over 6 years.
Tim
I second that emotion!
i highly recommend the 8 i got of the first ones out and still works very well;)
I have an entry level Marcum. I love it and it was a little less money.
i snagged an fl-8se from bass pro shops when they were on clearence for $199 last summer. it's the best $200 ive spent on fishing gear.
Cody.
Have you decided yet?
check local pawn/second hand stores. I picked up a like new FL-8 SLT with a the S-cable (for shallow water), 9/19* transducer, and genz pack for 200$
That's a great deal! You'll be so glad you bought it.
Sorry to not put this question on a seperate post, but this seems to
be the largest gathering of Vex users I've found-
got a 18 on the bow of the used boat I got last fall, it is hooked up
to a MK maxxum with the first gen universal sonar...
I have to run it on the low power setting, and still can barely turn the
gain up past 1, even in 20-30 fow. Any more and the screen goes wild,
lights up like a Christmas tree all around. Is this normal, or do they not work
well with the U.S.? It also goes crazy if I turn the troller up more than
40 percent or so, but I wasn't too surprised by that.
oh, and it is hooked up to my cranking bat, not the troll batteries.
Never heard of one being hooked up to the universal sonar. Have you checked their website ( US ) to see if it's compatible with this type of flasher?
that is a sweet deal, and it will totally help ya put 200% more fish on the ice. :)Quote:

I'm thinking this is just some of the funkiness of u.s., I would put the seperate transducer on, but don't have it.
Anyway, thanks. Jeff
Jeff, if you could get hold of a seperate ducer in any way, do it and try that. It just sounds like you're getting an interference problem, or your u.s. is funky. I remember reading about complaints when minn-kota first introduced the u.s., but not much after a few years of getting the bugs worked out. If you can't borrow a ducer, call Vexilar and talk to a tech and explain the problem you're having. It might just need to have the brushes cleaned.

It does sound like it needs to have the brushes replaced. The last I heard they went for about 40$ & you put them in or they will for about 70$.
It could be some sort of interfernce problem too.
Have you tried to use it all by itself without hooking anything else to it?
you can hit my Vexilar link & then hit the help button. All of the info you need is there including the direct phone # to them.
They want to help you if you need it.
