I just bought a new Humminbird 899ci hd si unit this past month and have still not been able to try it out. This is my question. I have read a lot of posts about needing to update software . Do I need to buy a SD card now and do a software update or is my new unit already up to date? Thanks everyone in advance for the help with this question.
Latest update for the 899 is 7.650. Only you can answer what version is on your unit. But there is no reason you can't use the unit now. To check software version follow this procedure from the HB site. http://www.humminbird.com/Category/S...ftwareVersion/

The software version in your unit is dependent on how long the unit sat on the dealer shelf ...
You can check your unit's version by powering on the unit and pressing the Menu button during startup ...then select "System Status" from the 3 choices in the popup ...
Then log into your HB account, click on your unit, and verify the latest update available for your model unit ...
Updates are not mandatory (no matter what any HB CS rep says) ...
Read the description of the version software in your HB account to determine if there's anything in that specific update that could benefit you or your unit ...

I'm like you just bought a new 899 within the past month and mine has the latest version on it. Good unit I'm happy with it.
I am one of the unlucky ones mine has 6.900 software version on it so it must be one that has been in the store for quite awhile. Maybe when one of my Children or GrandChildren comes to see me I can get them to help me update my unit because I know very little about these SD cards and formatting and all that other stuff that is foreign language to me. Humminbird said on the MYHUMMINBIRD site that the update was 7.650. Can I update this anytime or do I need to do it as soon as possible to keep from losing this update?
No need to get in a rush ..... the update would include jigging mode which should improve your 2d, but your unit should work fine.
If that update goes away, that means there is a newer on there....You won't need that one anymore unless you just like to keep various updates on your computer so you have more options.....If an update comes out that has bug, it may turn out the older version is the best choice.
They were several other updates that did not get updated. Will this one update 7.650, updated the others, that didn't get updated? Like the 7.460 update that seems to be very important or how can I get those updates now? My unit seems to have missed out on a lot of updates does that mean that this unit will not be as good as the newer units or is it all in the updated software.
Once you decide to do the most current update, the unit will be the same as all others with that update....no need to do the ones in between.
Wow! Thanks BobB and everyone else here for the help updating my unit. My daughter came and I went and bought a SD card and in just a little while with the help of your posts and youtube telling her what to do she had the unit updated to the 7.650 version.
