The old man and I hit the docks for about four hours Saturday. Did much better than we anticipated. We ended up with 18. We had had three 11" and several over 10". Very light bite to say the least! Shad colored lures were the ticket

I was wondering if my 16 ft johnboat 30 hp would be ok on Smithville? Would be coming down from NE. advise needed plz new to all this thanks
I think if you fish at the "docks" you may have better luck

Lots of small boats use Smithville, altho I'm sure you know the dangers of high winds. Here is a map of the lake with access points. The ramps on the main lake are pay ramps, and the access points are free. There is a bridge at the red star, and another if you follow that road to the North and West. All areas to the North and Northeast of those bridges is still full of standing timber, so boat traffic is not bad. There are plenty of areas for small boats to fish and get out of the wind and still be very safe.Quote:

Im heading to Smithville on Sunday. Hope the weather/wind isn't too bad. Just picked up fishing last year, added a boat to the arsenal in September and fish finder in October. May practice using the Garmin if I am not having luck. Is it too early to fish timber? How about the main lake brush piles? Really enjoy the Smithville posts by the way. Thanks. Dreaming of bites and fried fish.
Welcome to the site Metal Hooker. Finding crappies in Smithville can be frustrating to say the least. You may want to try fishing around the boat slips like basscatman was doing. Main lake piles may be holding some fish, but it seems like you need to find balls of shad in order to find the crappies. Good luck to you, and let us know how well you did. Don't be afraid to start your own thread if you are looking for advice because this thread is getting old, and a lot of guys won't read it. Hope to meet one of these days!
Welcome and good luck. I'm usually at a loss this time of year, too late for main lake brush too early for timber and bank fishing. Find the shad is what I'm told but just not my thing.
