Has anyone ever taken one of the Alaska fishing trips that I see ads on. The price usually turns me off. At $1,000a day is getting steep. But my time is running out and I still haven't figured out how to take it with me. I wish I knew someone there that I could visit and they'd take me fishing.
That's on my bucket list too Gerald. Like you, I have not wanted to open my wallet and spend the money. Maybe someday.
On thing my Dad taught me when he died at age 49... you can't wait too long for those things you want/need. Do it now before you can't do it. No pockets in coffins

I say go for it ! Yea it will bite but as I get older I realize its what you do, who you do it with that really matters. Stuff is stuff, can't remember what year I got my first big screen tv. I'll never forget me and the wifes trip to Alaska or when it happened.
had a friend there and got to go for a couple weeks did pretty good for time we put in fishing
did not care for the halibut fishing nor eating them but salmon was good and plenty of fun to catch.
it is not cheep no way you go but you can go for less then a grand a day on your own.

Your not going to find a good guided saltwater fishing trip for less than $1000 anywhere. Why complain? Go do it!
I just want to to lake and river fishing. I've had enough of the ocean fishing over my past years.. I fidhed for Salmon in Mich for 15 years and that was fun, but just always wanted to fish Alaska. I think that finding the right place from someone that has been to a place that says that that place was good or it wasn't what they had expected means a lot to me. I know I' have went to places that were a real let down and others were more than I had expected. Maybe several of us here should plan a big trip there. I wonder how a group of Southern Red Necks would fit in there.
I am fortunate to have a good friend who lives on the coast of Oregon and we have done a lot of River fishing for King Salmon. Last year was my first time fishing in the Northern Pacific Ocean for Albacore Tuna and Salmon and it was a real treat.
If Alaska is much better than Oregon, I am not sure my heart could stand it.
That would be a much less costly trip than Alaska, and a lot closer.
I lived outside of Portland for 15 years. Enjoyed the coast fishing at Garibaldi & bouy 10 in the fall for silvers and chinook salmon. Spring time was halibut fishing and the spring run of salmon up the Willamette River. I absolutely loved it.Quote:

Saltwater Safari Company out of Seward Ak. Went out of there great people, hotel is on the small boat harbor. I looked at rates and would be around 600 a day for fishing and lodging.
Gerald, I say do it while you can. Dont have regrets. Maybe you can find some kind of Alaska fishing forum where people can lead you in the right direction on guides. A trip that far away I'd definitely want the best I could find.

Heading to Alaska August 1st. The last state on my bucket list. Renting a RV for three weeks and plan to do some fishing.
If you don't mind could you PM me the info on where you are getting the rental RV. I have been considering doing the same thing with a couple of buddies after we take the Alaskan cruise and then put the wives on a flight back home.

I took a two day charter out of valdez, ak in 2011, first day was halibut and second day was salmon. Charter was $400/day plus tip which all 6 of us chipped in on. Limited out of halibut, rockfish and black sea bass the first day and limited out on silvers the next. It was unlike any fishing ive ever done. Personally i would never pay that much as you can find charters cheaper and still catch your fish. Valdez, steward, and im forgetting some townships all have numerous fishing captains.valdez had professional fish cleaners waiting at the dock, costed $1 a rockfish and $3 a halibut. Then walked actoss the street to the meat processing store where they vacuum sealed all my fish and can ship home if your out of state. I imagine the main ports for charters will have similar setups.
Pardon the typos, hard typing on my ipad. Also, i made the drive up and back in 2008 and 2012 from wa dc when i got stationed up there. I can offer any insight on that also.
I've been looking at a couple of places around the Soldotna area and the Kenai River. Some that look good that you do all of the cooking yourself and the others there are two meals a day provided. About a $500 to $600 a week difference in price for the meals, and this is the low end places. Some of the other places are in the $5,000 to $6,000 range for a 6 day trip. I guess it's all about how well you'd like to be pampered. Still looking and reading a lot.. You really have to look at all of the small add ons that are in the fine print too.
Yeah unfortunately lodging rates double in the summer to gouge the tourists. Are you by any chance retired military? You plan on drivng or flying?
