Bug Spray!

Due to all the Issues with Mosquitos, I just saw that Consumer reports and another report, listed the Brand that I use for BEST Mosquito protection out of anything on the Market!
Maybe this can help someone stay safe...I posted this on another thread for Ketchn!

*Sawyer Fishermen's Formula* Bug Spray....best product out there for gnats, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, stable flies, black flies, chiggers, sand flies, no-see-ums, etc!
It dries on your skin and is not oily, it doesn't smell/or has just a hint of citrus on some people, and will not damage or hurt any kind of Nylon or plastics...PICARIDIN is the repellent, more effective than DEET and safer...spray is good for 12 hours against ticks and mosquitoes!
You can get it at BPS, Cabelas, Dick's, Wally World, or on-line!

me and skeeters seem to always have dinner plans ...and I have used all kinds of stuff to slow down that dinner bell ...

The Federal Government has said, for many years now, that DEET is the most effective skeeter repel there is. Various manufacturers may proclaim to being better, but if you are a military man, in the tropics, you need the best protection you can get. Deet does the job. Now, if you believe a certain product is better, and it works for you, more power to you. I would like to see the hard data on Picaridin, that compares it's effectiveness to Deet.

I've used Deet for many, many years and have rarely been bitten. I also protect myself from ticks by treating my clothing (pants, socks, shoes and hats) with Promethrin. Combined you can trapes around in any kind of shoreline brush, fishing your heart out and not have to worry one bit. It just works for me. JMO! :)

My family and I use OFF bug spray with deet. No bugs bite you with that stuff on but be careful when putting it on because it will discolor your depthfnder and any other plastic items.

Doesn't help with ticks I don't suppose for skeeters a thermocell is the only way to go

The military still says that deet is the best. I use a thermocell.

DEET in 100% form is just as effective as PICARIDIN in 20% form...these are the MAX for both...higher concentrations for PICARIDIN are in final stages of testing....higher concentrations do not effect repellency, just length of time the repellent lasts!

Do you buy anything American made or developed?

We have two kind's of mosquito's.The ones that go through the screen's.(White River)The other's (black river) that open's the door and goes right in.They All want your Blood.A friend came up from Florida to go squirril hunting with us.(black river bottom's skeeter's)My dad ask him if he had (mosquito)(skeeter dope)(100% deet).He said I am from Florida skeeter's do not bite folks from Florida.We droped him off at a big din tree. Before daylite( no skeeter dope)(100 % deet).We walked a little ways dad said I better check and see if (dads friend) was alright.We walked to were we could see him but he could not see us. Dad's friend was swatting skeeters madly threw down his gun and ran out of the wood's.Dad picked up his gun and took it to his (florida friend).Asked him if he wanted some (skeeter dope)(100% deep) He said I am never going back in those woods Those skeeters are devils they have all my blood.Dad told him these skeeter's don't care where your from they want your Blood!!! (100% deep)not 99.5,99.9,(100% deet)only thing that works here are stay out of the wood's!!!:biggrin:yikes

2×on the deet nothing stop chiggers but deet. Them dang chiggers love me.

Actually I know quite a bit about it....I have a commercial pesticide applicators license and I have done a lot of studying on it.

Thats says camaros have not been built in USA since 1990....but states the 2016 is made in USA

Deet and Picaridin are both good.......Picaridin which is made by Bayer is good for the flying critters skeeters, gnats, no see ums etc. but if your concerned about ticks.....then you better stick with deet according to the test results that I have read. The only thing wrong with Deet is it attacks plastics, nylon, and some other fabrics ...and it has a oily feel on skin and has a bad odor But it is very effective.

Well, I will try the PICARIDIN to see how it works......and have some 100% deet as backup:juggle Has anybody that is so adamant it won't work as well as deet actually tried it?

One thing is for sure, if it works for me it will work for anybody.....mosquitoes just love me! There can be a group of 20 people and I'm the only one getting eaten alive.

If it works, it could prevent major damage to your boat electronics too.

I donno, we take a family vacation up to a lake in northern Wisconsin every year. Skeeters sometimes get really bad, and ticks are always around. The only things that work have DEET, the higher the concentration the better. By the end of the week everyone has ditched everything else they brought for Deep Woods OFF with Deet.

Avon Skin so soft has some skin lotion and sun screen skin bug stuff with icradin ( maybe) which is the same stuff as picaridin. It works and you don't stink. Johnny Bench told me it don't stink.

I mostly use 30% deet cause wal mart has it in stock and I don't hang out at the Avon store.

DDT works too.

I tried Thermocell two seasons ago. Gave up on it. It does work wonderfully well - as long as you are very still and stay in one place. If you walk the bank like I do, the "cloud" of protection Thermocell provides dissipates quickly, leaving you unprotected until you become still again. Great concept, but it has it's flaws. I'll stick with DEET.

Also less effective if there is a breeze, but then again, skeeters are not great fliers, so a breeze is actually a plus! :)

The 2016 Camaro is made in Lansing, they just started production recently.... the 2012 that I have was built in Canada...info takes some time to catch up...that's why I do the extra research, and compare all the facts, and then I can come to a honest conclusion, to try and help others...or post reliable info.:)

I had a "64 Nova SS that would eat a Camero's lunch.

they had cars back then ???

And that's all I provided the info for...just to let people know that there are options for fishermen that won't hurt their equipment, etc....if it works for you, then you won't have to take precautions with all your Nylon bags, line, lures, etc...if it doesn't woke for you then "No harm, No Foul"!:)

Some things work for one group of people and some works better for a different group, we all have different body compositions, etc. This is just another option that maybe someone didn't know about!

I LOVE CARS!!!!

The Camaro is my DD....still gets 20+MPG...500+crank HP....cam, ported, polished, matched intake manifold, heads, and shorties, straight through Outlaw, Performance cold air intake, and tune! Plus a 150 shot for weekend fun. 275's on 20x10's in the front, and 315's on 20x11's in the back. Suspension is stock and perfect. Larger ZL1 brakes.

I have a 69 GOAT...Race Car...455SD (punched out), tubs, 70 Monza Red with pearl white Starsky and Hutch Stripes.
Also have an 05 Goat that I built, and is in Storage for my son.

Old timer's use to eat sulfur to repel mosquitoes. They would eat it then later they(their skin,sweat,etc.) would start smelling like sulfur. Take at your own risk(your wife may even throw you out of the house). Here is a recipe: How to Eat Sulfur for Mosquito Repellent | eHow

• Thoroughly mix together 2 tsp. sulfur, 1 tsp. of Cream of Tartar and 1 pint of honey in a pint jar. Sulfur can be found over the counter in most pharmacies.
  
• Take 1 tsp. of this recipe every day. It will take about two weeks for the repellent to become effective.
  
• Continue consuming this recipe throughout the mosquito season. Be certain to thoroughly mix this recipe before consuming it.

Same with Garlic, people eat cloves, some say onion works also, but you would have to eat ALOT every day:)...I eat a lot of Tomatoes sliced with garlic powder and alittle sea salt in summer...it seems to be OK around home.
But when I fish in summer, it is always at night...you can hear the swarms buzzing, so I break out the Sawyers just to prevent severe blood loss and agony of swelling and itchin from millions of holes!:):):)

I know one thing for sure, you won't have to worry about vampires if you eat a lot of garlic! LOL!

Another thing that the older people did was to put powdered sulfur on old dried up cow piles and set them afire to smoke mosquitos away. But I have just used a old cotton sock or cotton rag with sulfur. Just light it then put out the flame and it will smolder and smoke it does the same thing.

The year: 1986

The Place: Parris Island, SC

The recruits, of 2^nd Battalion Fox Company, filed quickly and orderly out of their barrack for morning formation. As they went through the process of forming up and preparing for the arrival of the Drill Instructors for their first full day of training, they were whoa fully unprepared for their first major challenge of recruit training which was silently lying in wait over their heads, lurking amongst the rooftops of their barracks going through their own version of the scene below.

The platoon guide gave the command of “ATTENTION.” Platoon 2042 smartly snap to attention. “DRESS RIGHT, DRESS.” Their left arms come up to shoulder height fully extended palm down, their heads snap crisply to the right. They align themselves finger tips to shoulder to the recruit to their right. The squad leaders make a left facing motion and then visually and verbally align their squad in a straight line with the commands of forward, back and steady, before returning to their forward facing position. “READY TWO.” Arms drop and heads snap back to the front. “COVER” the second, third and fourth squad members align themselves to be directly behind the recruit in front of them. Then the command of “PARADE REST” was given. For the recruits of platoon 2042, it meant moving their left foot approximately 12 inches to the left and snapping both hands behind your back with the palm of your right hand in the palm of your left and not moving. For the South Carolina “Sand Flea” it meant “ATTACK boys we have them right where we want them.”

For the uninitiated, the Parris Island “sand flea” is the animal kingdoms version of a flying ninja assassin. Roughly the size of a “gnat” so impossible to see until it attacks the tender parts of the neck and back of a freshly cut bald head, or gathered in extremely large search and destroy squadrons. They possess a bite that can reduce a full grown elephant to its knees in tears in seconds when attacking in small numbers and can drive a man insane when attacking in large coordinated numbers as they do “EVERY” morning formation.

In fairness the recruits had been warned the previous night by their Drill Instructors to the trials and tribulations of the “Sand Flea” menace that inhabited the wonderland of Parris Island. They had been warned that the menace would become a major hurdle to their efforts to develop and maintain a “Proper” military bearing at all times. They all thought they were overly prepared; the majority sadly was never in the game.

At this point dear reader, I shall not attempt to describe the horrific onslaught of that first terrible morning. I shall not attempt to regal you with details of the systematic massacre of “military bearing” that took place or with heroic tales of bravery or epic failures of character. I shall not describe the time honored battle tactics of the “sand flea” for quite simply if you have never experienced it for yourself, no humble words of mine can truly do it justice. I shall ever simply move forward into the evening.

As the late evening drawn on and the time for “Lights Out” rapidly approached the recruits of platoon 2042 busied themselves with preparations for tomorrow. They were still talking in shocked surprise and horror of the voracity of the early morning assault. They had compared amongst themselves every manner of weapon that they had employed in their defense. They had asked for information from their Drill Instructors. They had reached conclusions amongst themselves on their defenses that had zero impact on the enemy, those that offered some minor defense and those that appeared to offer the greatest resistance to the efforts of the enemy. They had done calculations as to how long their current resources would last and how long to resupply.

As the recruits climbed into their racks and the lights were turned off, there were thousands of individual thoughts running through their minds about the events of the day. There were however two common thoughts that every recruit held. Relief, in the short term, that sharing agreements had been reached to spread their most effective defense around for the common defense of the entire unit and lastly the composition of their first Sunday letter back home.

How does a teenage boy ask his Mother to send at least two bottles of AVON Skin so Soft to Marine Corps. Recruit training and convince her that IT IS a “matter of life or death?”
