The rules say 3 in block style. Any insight on how strict they are for Block. Just bought a new boat and want to have a little style in it. Any recommendations on where to get custom letters/numbers?

The law does say block lettering but doesn't say anything about font. I would also say that as long as it is on there in the right size and legible you probably wont have any issues that's my opinion. Here's a web site to look at

Call the Highway Patrol and ask them how much the ticket would be.
You'll see different fonts used. Make sure letter color contrasts against the hull color so they are easily seen.
I ordered my numbers off the internet. They had many different fonts and colots. I just made sure I used 3" size. I made them a color with a contrasting shadow behind them and had no problem with Conservation Dept. or Water Patrol personnel. Just make sure they are easily visible.
Make sure you don't have a bolt from rod holder through the letters too. Got stopped for that one last summer. You could still read the numbers plainly but didn't like the bolts through the numbers. Had to fix that. No ticket for it. I got new numbers and put them in front of old numbers. Have been checked by water patrol before and they never said anything. Oh well. Just bought ours at Wal Mart. Nothing fancy.
I have 3" with a slight slant been checked several times and nothing ever said. I got mine done at D & M Sign Co in Clinton, on Hwy 7, they have all kinds of style a color if there still open that has been 10 years or plus.
I got in trouble with the Conservation department at Mark Twain lake. I had red/white and blue numbers in 3" block. Said he couldn't read my red numbers with his binoculars. Didn't matter that I had the family and kids with me, chewed me out and said that if I brought the boat back with out changing the numbers he would write me up. I was being polite so I didn't know why he was so upset over the numbers? :dono
I had the same thing happen at Thomas Hill once. Lake Patrol pulled me over because he couldn't read my numbers with his binoculars. Didn't give me a ticket but just a warning. My numbers were the right color just not far enough apart. He said I would get a ticket the next time he caught me. He was fairly polite and he was right, I just put the #'s next to each other without much separation. It was a brand new Skeeter that I had only had for 2 weeks, I sure hated scraping those #'s off but I did that day and the next day I saw him looking at me again with his bino's.
Wal-Mart has some fancy looking letters
The Missouri Department Of Conservation's favorite song, Charlie Brown, why is everyone picking on me.
There is a good guy in Warsaw who will give you different fonts and make a real nice looking decal with your numbers. As to the legality, it depends on the officer and how he feels towards you on that particular day as to whether your letters fit the rules. If you want the decal maker's info, just call down to Angler's Port Marine and ask them.
It also says the numbers have to be a certain distance apart. I think either 1" or 1 1/2" apart. The numbers I got at WM worked out good. When you put the blocks side by side the numbers were the correct distance.
I got stopped because i had no spacing between my letters and numbers. Bought my boat in ks and the letters and numbers have been on there ever since.
Pretty much checked everything out and gave me a warning. Truth be told... i still havent changed it.
I got checked coming out of state park marina at Truman a couple years ago for the same reason. The letters were ok but too close together. I told him it was the first day of my trip and couldn't get the new ones on until next time. He said ok and said if someone else pulls you over show them this. He was nice and polite and so was I. Make sure the letter spacing is correct.
Here's the Regs,
Boat/Vessel Licensing - Additional Information.
Several companies making some very nice ones IGUANA GRAFIX is very popular,
Mine don't stand out alot but never had an issue. I did order them on line but now can't find the website. There are a bunch of websites that make them, Wow! Iguana is not automated but the one I used was. Not sure it matters.
In MO. they have to be three inches tall with a 2 in space between the groups ie: MO ( 2 inch ) 1234 ( 2 inch ) AF any sign shop can custom cut them and they just need to contrast to be seen from a distance with binocular..... I have cut several sets and never had any problem with them passing.
Thanks guys. Good info and should be able to make sure I keep them LEOs happy
Some care some don't. I got pulled over with the new boat and was told my letters had to go. They were black and grey on a black boat :biggrin. Not my doing they came with the boat. No ticket no big deal guy just said get them changed. I said okay! I can't stand the boring Walmart letters so i called up Daryl at Iguana graphics. He can make you a custom set of anything you want. Best part, he told me if LEO doesn't think they will work he'll replace them for free. So what do you have to loose?
