What length poles does everyone like to use for spider rigging?
I use 10, 12, 14, and 16 ft. I stagger the lengths to help keep from lines crossing.
Do you put the longest poles toward the front of the boat or sides
I use all one length..14 or 16
I have a 10, several 12 and just got a 14. My thinking is I definitiely want my longer ones near the trolling motor.
If you are buying, take a look at the Southern Crappie rods. They feel great and you can get replacement tips. Also look at the size of the eyes on any rod. If you want to use a bobber stop as a marker for length of line you have out, they hardly fit through rods with small (micro) eyes.
I run 6 12' rods of the front of my tracker and 2 10' and 2 8' off the side
I like the 16ft B&M for shallow water fishing. I just bought some 8ft rods for winter fishing as the fish are deep.
I run 14' and 12' Be careful with the longer poles as I have broken several 14'
I almost always fish off the side. I have broken a couple rods, different lengths, but that was mostly because I had a fish too high up and the rod was bent too much and something had to give!
I fish all 14 and use the cheap Pinnacles from Grizzly Jig. If you break one you are only out $15 instead of $60. They work great. 14 is much easier to handle for me than a 16 foot.
Exactly.
One reason to use a really long rod is to get the bait away from the boat when the fish are shallow. If the fish are deep and won't be spooked by the boat, then a shorter rod can be used and is more manageable. So before running about and buying sixteen foot poles, ask yourself why you need a pole like that.
I use 8 and 10 footers for two reasons:
- I have a small boat
- I usually don't spider rig if fish are shallow
If fish are shallow I use cast and retrieve.
My spider is deformed and has only two legs- and I use 8', 5-6 lb line weight fly rods with 20 lb braided, orange Suffix line.:biggrin
16' southern crappie rods, the 14's are real nice too, they are made from carbon and kevlar and are way more durable than there graphite counterparts
