I have almost come to the conclusion b&m reels just want work for my fishing, I've tried several different ones and they don't hold up. Gears stripping line getting off spool and behind gears.
The solos are reversable. I can't exactly remember right now what you do to make it right hand but I've reversed all of mine. You have to take the spool off and flip one piece over and then it will work. If I have time after work tomorrow I'll take one apart and refresh memory and take some pics if you like.
A quick search will get ya an answer.

Thanks for the replies I am going to do it tomorrow. Is this a good real?
I use a 9' fly rod and Daiwa fly reels with a drag, however I tight line fish using a single rod in water usually less than 12'. Never broke a gear but then again I don't catch as many quality large fish like you.
The solo reels are excellent..... For what they are. If you're looking to "reel" in a fish, I'd go another route.
With that said I have two and love em.
Take a look at the Eagle Claw in line ice reels. Pushbutton free spool, reversible and star drag. Best price I found was on Sportsman Guide. Have had no problems with mine.
Josh I have many Solos and love them. I use them for fishing our fairly shallow water and moderate size fish. They do have a drag on them which helps when fighting an occasional larger fish but for your situation where you are constantly hauling in large crappie and the possibility of a large buffalo, catfish, or striper, I think I would rather use a spinning reel. It would give you the advantage of a better drag system to fight the larger fish. Also since you are fishing straight down in the fish house the reel handle doesn't get in the way like it does when pitching jigs to shallow water targets, and it's easier to let out the line to get to the bottom in 20 plus feet of water.

Josh, I use Cabelas I think it is "Prestige Plus" fly reels that have a disc drag system that works for me. It is left hand or right hand reversible. The larger arbor keeps the line from getting line memory. They run that one on sale a couple of times a year @ 29.95.
I reversed the solo and I like the way it feels, but I don't think it's going to last. I will know soon
Nope it's garbage!!! I caught 5 fish this am with it and it's striped out.
Josh, this is what we use and have never had any trouble with them. They are $12.99 at Academy.

Josh, I don't use this exact one but when I do use a "reeling" reel, I go with a spincast similar to this one. In water under 20 feet deep, I like to use Line Minder reels and just pull the string so I can keep the same depth. Here is a link to the line minder reels I use. https://www.slatersjigs.com/crappie-...nder-reel.html
The Solo is more of a line holding reel and not a fish fighting reel. To fight larger fish you need a reel with good gears and a good drag.

I have 4 solo's, but like PPG I really just use them for line holders. Terrible ratio for reeling. I use several varieties of spinning reels and like them all, including the $12.99 Shimano's. Here is a link to Mr. Ed Dukes fishing with those reels. He is the designer and producer of Southern Crappie Rods. By the way they are good rods , best for the money. Made of kevlar.

Come-on Josh...if your constantly going after 3 and 4 pound Crappie, you need to upgrade your tackle. I would hate to see you latch onto a Record fish and not be able to land it!:):):)lol
In the past I have only used Shimano spinning reels.......some do double duty with bass fishing......they are getting more expensive so I decided to try another brand......got this one for $22 at BPS just for crappie.....so far I really like it.....I use 8# Stren line......might go back for more reels.....some of my poles I use a "line holder" when fishing shallow which of course is not intended to be used to reel in fish......here is a link to my new reel....
