Nope not at all. However you can with candy or pearl colors and the bottom will show through.
We use the white or white pearl under the glow colors and the disco colors.
Like Jackie, I also use white base for glow. Also use it under silver some. You can also use it under candy colors but I prefer to use the same color as the candy for a base.
Candy colors seem to be brighter for me when applied over a freshly cast jig....still shiny. When I need to do up candies I cast the jigs then paint the same day or next. Disco colors don't need an undercoat if you apply them to fresh jigs. Try candy over a gold or silver plate some time...hint, hint.
Here's a Junebug candy color I make using transparent purple and green micro glitter that is blended with clear and some purple top coat pearl. This batch went directly on fairly fresh heads. The only way this color gets any brighter is by applying it over a silver plated head. A white undercoat would eliminate the depth of the clear color you see here.
