I have always used 6lb Mr crappie mono line.and looking to try something new out. With all the new advancements in fishing line now a days its hard for me to pinpoint what line would be a good fit. Does anyone use florocarbon line for crappie fishing? What kinda line do you use? Any feedback suggestions advice appreciated. I'm not new to crappie fishing but its never too late to gain more knowledge about crappie fishing.
This past summer, I started using McCoy copolymer fishing line. It's better, in every way, than any other line I've used. In particular, there is very little memory (even in cold weather), much less than Trilene XL. It is, however, comparatively expensive to other premium brands.
I've used a dozen or so different brands of mono over the years, and I'm currently using Vicious Panfish hi-viz 6# test copoly. Good stuff !!
Prior to that I was using the USA made version of Mr Crappie Super Hi-viz 4# test and Stren Gold 4# test. Both are good, strong lines for their respective diameter & pound test ... but, the Mr Crappie line is no longer made in the USA & I've read complaints (on here) that it's not as good as it used to be. :dono

I use Vicious hi vis from 1# to 10# as needed.. I use Vicious floracaebon to make my minnow rigs.. No more experimenting for me
You need to have an idea what you would want to try first...you will get MANY different opinions of what is best to use to catch Crappie!
The many options include cheap OLDER styles of Mono, Fluorocarbon, or Braid/Superlines.
Mid-Priced NEWER styles of Mono, Fluoro, or Braid.
And NEW higher priced styles of Mono, Fluoro, or Braid.
I prefer Seaguar Smackdown Tourney Braid...I feel for the way I fish that it has ZERO drawbacks and all the benefits.
Trout Magnet SOS is a great co-polymer at a great price....if you are looking for nylon line. It comes in 2...4....and 6# test. A very manageable line....easy casting. The 2# test would most likely test out at 4# test. So I am sure that the 4 and 6# test will test out higher also. I wish lines made for US market would test out at what the line rating is but seems all companies rate them lower than they test. I fish with fluorocarbon straight through on one rod. It is 3# test Toray Razor out of Japan. It is a premium line but even at that you have to be careful when casting. The key in using fluro...IMHO....is to make sure the weight of the lure is enough to bring the line off the spool.....I can't cast a 1/64 ounce jig head with fluro.....it will become a birds nest. I also have one rod setup using 2# test NanoFil with a 2# test fluro leader. It is my go to setup for crappie and Gills. I have had a lot of success with it. These are my experiences fishing those lines casting.....don't do much vertical jigging.

Anything but braided line I would try.looking for a good line that will cast smooth with minimal memory. With some abrasion resistance
I regularly land 2-5 pound Smallies on the SOS 2# test. I can cast a 1/64 ounce jig with it......works great in cold or hot weather....no memory. Use the line on Center Hill Lake...nothing but rock there....abrasion resistance is very good. For the money it is hard to beat......I also use some mono lines out of Japan and Europe that are great lines....but costly.Quote:

Fluorocarbon....good for leaders but never found any that fished good for a spool
I use green colored line on everything and everywhere.Except if I use Fluorocarbon leader I use clear. I also use a mono leader on power pro.
I started using this combination on the advice of tackle shops in Florida while surf fishing. It worked and I just started using it everywhere from muddy to crystal clear.
I have used these and can vouch for them.Now reviews are not everything but if they are overwhelming it means something. Now things are constantly changing and there is so much out there who could ever test it all. I am sure there is better stuff and I still experiment at times looking for improvements.And I am not one of these super fisherman who always is at the top of their game and have everything figured out.
I just sort of wandered around and picked up a few things from local tackle shop people. Have caught thousands of fish in salt and fresh of probably 50 species and it has served me well all things considered.
You can and will find better I'm sure but I will say that in a pinch you can get by with these lines pretty well if you have too.
Now I'm gonna try some of these other recommended lines to see how I like them LOL.

I use whatever I find on sale. It's just crappie. Unless you are trying to catch a world record or fish the "trophy lakes", I don't think it really matters. The only line that I know really sucks is Vanish. It was one of the first fluorocarbon lines and the worse. I use 6lb. Hi vis, camo, and clear. When I get tangled long lining, I know which line goes where. Makes it a lil easier. I do use a fluorocarbon leader on all rods though. My lake is VERY clear and I think It helps, especially when shooting docks. I just tie a triple overhand knot to connect leader to main line. Just like a regular loop knot, just no loop. Caught stripers with no problem.
I'm currently trying out viscous and Gama panfish 4 and 6#. Both seem to cast identically with 1/16 oz weights, and the 4# Gama definitely being the stronger of the two 4#ers with a loop not. With only a week of use Memory is still up in the air on all. Gama does seem to show up a little better also.
Stren Original 6# test goes on every reel I own with the exception of ice fishing and trolling rods. I use it for main line on line shy steelhead in the river, Salmon fishing, crappie casting jigging and longlining, jigging the river for walleye over 10lbs. Everything!
All of my trolling equipment (for walleye) runs Berkley 10#XT.
My ice fishing rods are all Vicious Hi Vis 4#
The only deviation I have is Salmon trolling the great lakes. Then I step up to a different setup.
I've yet to break off a walleye in any condition (tournament or other) while jigging the river with 3/4oz jigs. I don't break off steelhead too often, and Salmon fishing the river, I enjoy fighting the fish so 6# gets my vote. That said, you have to have the right fishing rod for the job. My steelhead rod is used for Crappie fishing a lot. It is a 10'6" rod, medium light weight, slow action with a bend from the tip to the handle. The rod takes up the shock and the fish is fought with the rod and not the line.
My jigging setup is different than 95% of most walleye tournament anglers. They prefer short 63" medium weight extra fast action rods coupled with braided line. I use a 7'6" custom rod, medium light weight, fast action rod. They tend to rip the jig out of a fishes mouth due to zero line stretch and rod forgiveness whereas I bury the hook in the side of the jaw.
