It's kinda like red heads or blonds, find one with the features you like and buy it. Plenty of good options out there.
Some opinions refer to Simrad/Lowrance HDS as the best 2d ...
Some opinions refer to HB as the best shallow water SI ...
Some opinions refer to Garmin CHIRP as the best long range SI ...
Some opinions refer to Lowrance Structure Scan DI as better than HB core DI ...
Some opinions refer to ONIX as the best "Dedicated DI" ...
Some opinions refer to LakeMaster/Minn Kota/HB as the best networked system for controlling the TM with a head unit/mapping card ...
I'm afraid there is no best of everything in 1 unit ...
One should see which sonar technologies would best benefit their own specific fishing style and try to focus on more narrow criteria for those desired technologies ...
Of course I only follow 10-15 electronics forums every day ...so I'm not sure if my opinion counts ...

Rickie, thats a great answer. Helped me to feel more comfortable in my current unit. I currently have a HB 899 and use SI in shallow water and jigging mode in 2d for verticle fishing and to drop a bouy on a sunken stump or wood pile. Almost never use DI other than to confirm fish or sunken cover from the 2d when scouting.
Time to take a trip to the store and play with a few models:biggrin Great write-up Rickie
Too bad we cant network a garmin with a Bird, a Lowrance, and other other unit that is out there!
In addition to hands on at the store, there are numerous forums that have users screenshots out on the water. That gives further insight beyond promo and simulation shots.
I recently installed a Humminbird Onyx 10 with side, down image and touch screen. Best depth finder I have every used in 50 years of fishing. It is amazing with split screen and the lake maps are second to none. I found a brand new lake under my boat. I fish the same lake all the time and was amazed at all I had been missing. I am still learning new things about it ever time. I can stand 15 feet away form it and see every stick on the bottom. You can see your jig under the boat. I could go on and on. Any question just ask.
Well if money is no object....I never owned one but always heard Furuno is the professional grade finders. I have seen them on offshore saltwater boats. One thing about it,that same question even just 10 years ago would have been a lot easier to answer. These things have evolved at warp speed. I am still using some old Garmins,Hummers, and a Lowrance.
Thanks guys, I been really looking at the onix but wasn't sure if it was any better then the old core series. I also been looking at the lowrance gen 3 12 but I really like the idea of making my own maps with onix. Also the helix 12 looks ok idk lowrance side scan just doesn't seem near as crisp to me as the humminbirds.
ONIX and the HELIX 12 have AutoChart Live for making your own custom maps live on the water ...
ONIX has dedicate DI ... HELIX is "DI from SI" ...
ONIX comes in touch or non-touch ... HELIX is non-touch only ...
ONIX is more customizable than HELIX ...

I'm using the onix and Humminbird core unit. (Imo)
You say that money isn't an issue,so I would go with the onix.Best advice that I can give you for the onix, would be to just turn it on and select what frequency you want maybe adjust sensitivity to your liking and color pallet and that's it.also get the 360.run it on the number 3 speed, adjust sensitivity to your likes ,zoom in and out,as needed and fish and enjoy.
I don't use any of the other brands,so really can't advise. All the brands are great.(if you do get an onix?keep this in mind.it takes the onix over one minute an half to boot.so it's best to just leave it on once your on the water.you can put it in standby while not using it.)
Really appreciate input guys I think the onix is what I will go with it's been the one I really liked the whole time. Just wasn't sure if they was any better then the core units and I already have them so I didn't need another one just like them. What do you guys think onix on console or deck I will still be using 1198 also. I guess what my question is which one be the best tool for searching for fish on the console????
I would put the Onix on the console. Go the with 10 over the 8 and use a swivel mount if you have room. I bought The Technological Angler dvd on comprehensive onix and it really helped me learn how to use the unit. I looked at Furno but the humminbird charts are so much better. I used Furno when I fished offshore and they are great in deep water but humminbird is better for fresh IMO.
If your planning on using the 360.I would recommend putting the onix at the bow.just because of the 360.Something to consider though. The di,on the onix is far better than the DI on your 1198 (imo). The si,compared between the two units,is probably not going to be a factor. (imo)they both have very good si.(the 1198,wold be fine with the 360,but I think the onix is a little better there)
10 DI and a helix 10 si is a great price.you can share views between them...http://www.crappie.com/crappie/fishi...able-shipping/.
I primarily fish for walleyes, but hang out a bit here and on BBC to stay up with how others are fishing.
I purchased an Onix 10 SI touch unit in 2014 and used it in combination with a HB 917 for the 2014 season. The 917 did not have ethernet capability so I mounted it on the bow connected to the US2 transducer on my MK Terrova and had the Onix 10 on the console. I love the Onix. It has amazing imaging capability both side & down, Auto Chart is great & I use the Spot Lock & Follow the Contour features which link the Onix to the Terrova to control boat navigation for casting & trolling. The only limitation in the system was that the Onix & HB 917 wouldn't interface and I was always spinning the Onix around at the console as I was fishing from the bow.
This spring, I added an Onix 8 to the bow and have both Onix units & the Terrova interfacing thru a ethernet switch. I can now see all transducers, screens etc from both units either from the bow or console. I can also control the frequencies on each transducer to eliminate cross talk between the bow and stern. It is awesome.
I would suggest that if you go with the Onix, that you get the one you use the most in the touch configuration. It is much faster to move from screen to screen and to manage all of the functionality the unit has and it has a lot. My 8 is non touch and if I had it to again, I would have both of them touch.
Also, the advice given here relative to the Technological Angler Onix dvd is great input. I say this because the only issue I have had is not with the Onix, but with me. Onix has so much capability & functionality that there is a pretty steep learning curve and the best way to get over it is to study the manual & watch this video, . While the manual has all of the "stuff" in it, like other HB user documentation, it leaves some room for improvement. The dvd will give you more of an application based approach to getting the most out of the unit. Also, Halfren's Tech Angler Onix reference sheets are of value while you go thru this learning process. However, the most important thing is to get it out on the water & put it thru the paces. And when you get up the curve, you are going to love it.
The Onix is menu is easy once you figure it out. I use touch screen for some items and the control wheel for others. The manual is 258 pages. It just takes time and use. The dvd really helped. I kept
Halfren's Tech Angler Onix reference sheets close by while learning it.
