Looks like they hit the lottery. Your Dad must be a very good fisherman from the pictures I've seen and the trips you've told me about.

He just lucky that's all
heading there today to try my luck when i get off at 12. will report with good news for gifts of plenty for my freezer.
AS1975.....shiners or jigs.....
Jigs red black green
my buddy went last Friday and Saturday, said they were killing "Tennessee shad and black & chartreuse."
Man that is awesome! Thanks for the picture!
Would love to catch that many but would hate to have to fillet them in one sitting.
went out to the Charmie Friday for a little after work stress relief, took a little bit to figure out what they wanted for the day. didn't really catch much besides some chic's for a little while till i put a Tennessee shad on and realized i should have made the switch from the get go, they were about 15-20 feet off the bank at about 3.5-4' deep. came back with 4 that i caught in a matter of 20 mins right before i had to leave, just from 4 fish they filled a nice quart size freezer bag. since i have started to focus just on sac's these are probably the biggest that i have caught to date, that being said i figured i would represent this place with a decal on my boat as well.
Nice pic I went yesterday caught 3 missed 20 are so due to not having my net lost them try to swing them in the boat caught on blue green and a PPG special grey and blue hair jig
Good going Aramand, I'm glad to see some quality fish are starting to show up over there.

sorry, but where is the "union oil area"? In the basin?
Just East and slightly North of Morgan City.....
Attachment 221786
in between Stevensville and Amelia, some people call it the Cheramie, unless im wrong but i was brought up calling that area union oil.
I think we are both right but being from that area you may know more than me.....this is my understanding of all the names in that area....correct me if I am wrong.....I will be there tomorrow.....launching at either Attakapas or Doirons....

AS1975....sorry we hijacked your thread......
Attachment 221807Don't know if your willing to drive around but they just finished a brand new parish launch in bayou Louis on the hwy 90 side. And it's literally about a 3-5 min ride. Just throwing it out there. It's a little closer then the Amelia launch that's all and kind of smaller so the boat traffic is at a minimum.
Cobayashi
Cobayashi, that's great news I hated the landing under the bridge for many reasons. I will have to check it out. Is there some kind of dock besides the launch. Somewhere to tie up your boat and make getting in and out of the boat easy.
"gene"
Yes sir there is, like I said it's smaller then the Amelia launch it is a little steep but not bad. The good thing is you don't have to worry about air boats and such there, at least the 4-5 times I launched there it was rather calm and people went rushing you to get out the way. Oh its also $1 also and there are actually people there that keep it up, good place in my opinion.
Sounds like I need to make a trip just to check it out even if it's not with the boat. Of course it would better a better investigation if I had the boat. Maybe latter this week.

i just looked and the solunar forecast, and it looks incredible for Friday. i definitely will have to make a trip after work, so if you happen to be out there at about 1ish we might run into each other.
Wife couldn't make it so I decided to go to Henderson today......spent 2 hours trying to cross the river and get out of Baton Rouge......didn't happen......6 big trucks had wrecked at 3 AM shutting down I10......came back home.....too late to head south.....
Friday looks like the wind will be up but Thursday looks better.

Boy ya'll really bringing back the memories. I grew up fishing the union oil canals back in the 70's and 80's. My parent's owned the marina in Amelia back then and I'd skip school and fish every chance I could. Used to be able to launch at a small dock on the Union oil grounds back then back off of hwy663. Haven't been in that area in nearly 30 years... Sure do miss fishing the black water.
Cobayashi, Linda and I took a little ride over to the new boat launch. Of course we dragged the boat. The launch is very nice but as you say a little steep. I had no trouble launching and the parking lot is huge. Picking up the boat was a little problem since I had to back so far down the ramp Linda couldn't hook the strap to the bow and snug it down without standing in the water. I had to climb over the bow and stand on the trailer to keep from getting my feet wet. Other than that I like it very much. I sure shortens the boat ride, 6 minutes to Union and 7 1/2 to Christmas tree canal and 9 minutes to Persimmon pass. We did a bunch of running around while checking out the canals on my phones satellite view. Many of the canals are not on my GPS but now I have tracks to all I visited today and I will add more as I make more trips. The fishing was off and no one seems to be catching anything. We lucked out and caught 2 sac-au-lait and brought home 4 nice bluegills to go with them for lunch tomorrow.Very nice day on the water until the wind picked up around noon.

Thanks for the report PPG....I might go there Monday....bluebird day or not....
Yeah the launch is really nice, i have to back further to launch then to pickup. If you dont mind me asking what colors were you using? Last friday they wanted a minnow color, blue thunder, i had a blue/ silver w/ chartreuse tail and the chichapin and gills were tearing it up, once I switched caught a couple slabs in about 20 mins. I'm dragging the boat to work tomorrow and going check em out. I may end up going Monday to get my dad out the house, may end up seeing you out there PS. I have a friend that's like a god when it comes to sac's, he gave me a couple of ideas for that area. I'll report back my findings.
Look for me in this boat....that's Doirons launch....

Linda used just about every color in the box, she gets impatient when fish won't bite. I tried blue with chartreuse tail, white with chartreuse tail on which I caught my one slab, and gray ghost hair jig. I think Linda caught her's on a black and chartreuse tube jig. I tried using a float and tightlining, I even tried fishing the middle of the canals where I pick up some larger fish on my sonar unit. Seems like they just weren't there of not hungry.

Beautiful, just beautiful.Mr.Gene,where is this union oil located?
Boy Howdy
Mac, the Union Oil canals are North of Morgan City on the east side of Lake Palourde. You can launch at Amelia either under the old highway 90 (now 182) bridge on the west side or north of Amelia on highway 662 on the east side. There is a canal that goes around the lake on the East side and the Union Oil canals are the canals that branch off of it to the east. On another post Perfershiners posted a google earth picture and the name of the canals. It can also be accessed by launching at Stephenville on the west side and travel through canals to the east side. It used to be a great place to fish before the Hurricanes ruined it a few years back. It seems to be bouncing back which is great to hear. That system is just south of Lake Verett which used to be the best sac-au-lait fish area in this part of the state.

by chance has anyone been in the union oil lately, I'm curious how the water looks back there?
Haven't been in a while
That over with from what I heard
The water was nice a week and half ago. They were catching 40 to 80 per trip in the main canal going into union oil. Since I believe the action has calmed down. Seen pictures of the fish.
from what i have noticed the water on the spillway side has dropped about 3-4 feet "assuming" from when it was high about a month ago, the water level in the river looks about how it was before all the high water stuff started, so I'm sure that it should be alright on that side now. i was just curious if the water was back nice like it was in November. i went a couple of times in December and January and it was tough to find clean water, and where there was clean water there were boats playing follow the leader so i just did my own thing.
WOW!!:yikesBeautiful catch and beautiful looking fish.Mother Lode.Looks like your dad and friend had a blast out there.See you post Union Oil area quite often.Where is this located?
