I recently read an article in this month's Sportsman magazine about applying Mountain Dew through the gills of a bleeding bass to stop the bleeding. Apparently the citric acid will help close the wound. I thought I would mention it because I know I hate to throw back a short one that is bleeding. According to the article, it works fast.

When I use minnows I also use circle hooks. Never had a gut or gill hook. Always in the corner of the mouth. When I use jigs the don't seen to take it that deep. I have heard of the MD but never tried it.
Have to check this one out. I personally cut the line if the fish is deep hooked. They will digest the hook in no time. I go thru a ton hooks but don't think it's gonna cause any financial damage to turn a few back.
I will cut the line, too, but I have had some that seem to start bleeding before the hook is removed. I thought about circle hooks, took, but I thought the crappie would blow the hook out too easy or would tear out of the mouth (paper, and all��).I'll give them a try, though.
I have not had a problem with the circle hooks but remember with circle hooks you cant "set the hook". I don't think they get caught on tree limbs as bad either.Quote:

I've used Dr. Pepper for years. Just pour a can in the circulating livewell. Something about the soda i think calms them down before they bleed to death.
