Report:Cranking Saturday

I waited until the heavy rain passed then loaded up and headed out. I got to the lake and just before lunch The lake was up a foot or so and water temperature was 64.8 degrees
I started off fishing some repaints and it didn't take long for them to pay off

Forgot my cooler and had to use my sport brella tie down cord as a stringer
If the weather holds out I will probably try again tomorrow

That's quite an impressive catch and collection of crankbaits!
Does cranking work all year, or do you switch to other techniques at some point?

As long as the water temperature at least 50.
I caught them cranking in January this year.
I do switch off to spider rigging when the weather gets really cold.
Then I single pole the spawn and as soon as it's over back to crank'n

this is looking better and better

Was it a fish or a hang up wow I would think the line would break before the rod

I'm running 30 pound test braid. Normally I have the drag set real loose but apparently this time it was locked [emoji85] It was definitely structure

Thats why I use 10 lb. mono and a loose drag. I would rather lose a crankbait than break a rod. Been pushing and pulling crankbaits since 2008 and only lost a few baits.

What series crankbaits you using. 200, 300

When you do hang up a bait on a stump or something, how do you stop and get the bait loose? Seems everything would get tangled if you try to go back to the hung bait. I've never pulled cranks, but would like to learn.

I never stop you pull them out or break them off

Most of the time I cut trolling motor off.....reel all lines up and ease back and get un hung and save my crankbait.......I have a plug knocker for the tuff ones......only lost about three baits in eight years......never broke a rod.

Bandits float so if you do like G, you have time to reel in the other lines but you might get a tangle or two going on

Yeh.....its usually the pulling poles that get hung.....we pull six and sometimes push four at same time.....depending on the lake. We can reel in the pulling poles quick.....we leave the pushing lines out if its not one of them as they are not real deep.

I pull 10 and push 2 most of the time but I can push 4
When I trailer the boat I tighten the drags to keep line from getting loose and tangling I just didn't get that one loosened back up .
I have snagged up 3 rod and reel combos since I started cranking so I'm ahead for now[emoji1]

I tried trolling cranks on Lake Erling Saturday and didn't get a hit one even though I usually do pretty good. If you don't mind saying, where have the fish been located, on the channel, flats, and how deep are you having to run your cranks? The only fish we caught were off the channel drop offs in heavy cover single poling jigs. They were nice ones but it was pretty slow going. It's ok if you don't want reveal any of your eleven herbs and spices. LOL Thanks.

No problem I've been running my cranks with 40 to 50 feet of line out with the rod tips dragging the surface with arkie 350s and bandit 300s

That puts you in 11' range
The fish im catching are associated with the lip of the creek channel ... so I try to cross the creek channel rather than run with it
I have been running 1.4 to 1.7 mph make S turns and note if you get bites on the fast side or slow side to help determine the speed they want it at

Sounds like I've got to find a different place to troll on the lake where the flats are deeper. We caught them on jigs at about the same depth, 11' or so, but where we tried trolling once you crossed the channel the flats were only 9-10' deep and we would hang up if we were going more than 9' with our cranks. Whatever depth fish or the shad they are chaseing are on my fish finder I try to run a foot or two above them....they will come up a couple ft. to hit a crankbait.......lot less hang ups that way too
