Pete I'm no expert as I'm just learning to use my Sonar units, but I think that is probably a ball of baitfish.

Agreed. But where theres bait there's predators. Prolly in a neg mood. Always good to find the bait fish though. Good pic.
I'm no expert on fish finders, but as others have said I believe that is a school of bait fish. If you look on the color side there is a small grouping underneath the main formation. I would venture to say that smaller grouping would be the fish coming up to eat the bait.
Also took this pic but still no bite... Where can a person learn to read and understand more on this? I was thinking this was bass on bottom? But I don't know...

There are so many types of fish I don't try to tell. I just look for bait fish blobs and structure and if I catch I look for more spots like that on a given day. Don't hardly fish more than 15' of water.
Pete those do look like fish near the bottom.
For a better understanding go to the forum about the different units and interpreting what you see.

here is some info I have learned over the years about crappie.
normally, maybe with the exception of the dead cold winter, the crappie that are right on the bottom are NOT in feeding mode. when they get ready to feed, they move up in the water column, and suspend. this is normally where the bait fish are. I have seen this in summer and fall a lot. at darbonne every year, we almost all fish in the channel, which is between 28 and 45 feet deep. but we almost all fish 16-22 feet deep. im sure there are crappie on the bottom, but they are just not interested in feeding. I hope this made sense.
doc :)
Internet. Also a lot of the pros post tips on how to read depth finders and how to set it for what you are fishing
those fish on the bottom are probably beer cans.
