I was told leaving work tonight that DNR doesn't want anybody on the Lake(Murray) this weekend. Is that just a rumor or is it true? Thanks
Why would that be? Flooding?
I have not heard that.... although it would'nt surprise me.... the DNR did let the anti hunters manipulate them into setting a ( temporary ) ban on hunting in several counties....
Why stop there....
I don't think that is correct. I have not seen anything posted on their website about Murray.
I really don't think has anything to do with anti-hunters manipulating them !!! here I what's on the their website about this ;
Due to unprecedented statewide flooding, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has declared a temporary closure for hunting within 5 coastal plain drainage systems on all game species except for alligator, doves, hogs and coyotes. The Department has received contacts from numerous concerned sportsmen. The flooding has created potential for exploitation of game species that are deprived of their normal escape routes and confined to small areas of high ground.
Effective at Midnight on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, a 4-day closure of the hunting season for all game species excluding alligator, dove, hogs and coyotes will be in effect. The current closure will continue until Midnight, Sunday, October 11, 2015. DNR will continue to monitor flooded areas to adjust the closure zones and timeframes as conditions change. Read more on temporary hunting closures.
Find the original post from the DNR on facebook where someone brings up the possibility of a ban, then take the time to read all the replies, and I think you will see where the push for it came from...
These same folks that are supposedly worried about the stress the weather is causing the deer don't seem to give a whit about all the deer killed on the highway's on their route leaving the flooded area's.......or has non of them noticed the high rate of dead deer on the roads lately? maybe they will ban driving for a bit to allow the deer stress free egress across the roads...
If the DNR would have said we are imposing a 10 day ban on hunting AND add 10 day's to the end of the season that would be different....
And by the way I have not hunted for atleast the last 10 years.
The way it's storming down here right now, I don't think anybody is brave enough to get out on the lake. A huge lightening storm from 6 to 8 with more coming it looks like. Just what we need, more rain. 1 to 2 inches expected. Flash flood warnings have already been posted.
I see it in radar
I have not seen or heard anything about Lake Murray.
not trying to get into a argument over this with you , but anyone that knows how to hunt deer would know that the odds are way more in their favor more then the deer's and it would be like shooting them in a cage if they was allow to hunt certain areas !!! IMO
We not arguing we discussin...............So possibly taking advantage of a natural occurance is bad, hunting over bait is somehow fair chase? every one of the affected counties allow baiting..
My point is the idea of the ban was mostly driven by those who do not hunt and would completely ban hunting all together given the chance....
Have we not learned from the anti gun crowd if you give them a inch they will take it a mile?
Well just got back from breakfast and talking to my wife she said the same thing. She had also heard about staying off of Murray, maybe right around the dam. She said they had said that this is not a time for pleasure riding. Oh well so much for Sundays fishing trip.
I used to fish with an old boy at Santee by the name of Don Drose. He lives in Manning and after Hugo he was out of power for 31 days. He said he would ride around and in every field and pasture that was high ground, there would be a hundred deer just standing around day and night. The swamps had ten feet of water in them. The deer were just trying not to drown. I don't hunt much anymore, but it is probably a good idea to give it a few days for the water to go down because there is some idiot out there, and you know there is, that would try to fill up a dump truck with deer.
Amen Thumper1 that was why the ban was put in place. Not because the anti-hunters wanted it. SC has the longest season and I don't think anybody will miss 4 days of hunting. With no limit a lot of hunters would kill as many as possible just to brag about it. I for one am glad the did it
we should all go down there and use the high water to exterminate some coyotes!
poachers get around $50 per deer,,,so it is all about money for some...:-(
