Guntersville report October 04-09

Fished Guntersville Sunday through Friday. Water temp was 69 degrees Sunday morning and dropped to 67 through the day. Fished bridges hwy 69, feed mill, and the little bridge on the causeway in front of Top O The River. We managed 36 day one, 35 day two, 41 day three, 19 day four, only 6 day 5... Because we had fish to clean. 137 total with several in the 2lb range. Friday the water temp was 75 at daylight. The temp change hurt the bite over the week. Also I noticed approx 4 of the fish were almost wasting away to nothing... The rest appeared healthy and were fat. We filleted the thin fish before we decided to discard them and it appeared they were all females with old eggs in them... I thought they may have been females that never nested in the spring, or had some kind of parasite it's a total mystery to me. All in all a great week and fish to eat... Beautiful weather also was a plus.

We fished Bobby garlands blue ice with 1/32 oz pink jig heads. Also we tight lined minnows near the concrete structure. We culled over 100 crappie almost every day....there seem to be a lot of 8 inch crappie this fall. Also approximately 85% we caught turned out to be males.... The sick or skinny fish were all female and were large fish... Big heads with thin bodies.

What depth were they running? Tried tree tops over the weekend and only found a few.

The crappie that were close to structure were 4-6 feet deep in 15 fow. There we several suspended in various sizes around 8' in 20 fow. They were really hard to pinpoint though... I'd catch 3 or 4 but no more from a school.

Thanks, I'm hoping the cooler weather this weekend will help concentrate them more and increase the bite. As for myself I'm ready for the cooler weather after that summer we had.
