Rookie with Electronics (Hummingbird)

I am new to this Hummingbird game. I have a 999 SI KVD on console and a 859DI on the bow. I have watched youtube videos, read articles, etc. But still having trouble setting up everything or knowing what it should look like or what setting to have it on. really all I have been using it for right now is the contour map. I have used the SI and DI a little and have marked a few things, but it just doesn't seem as clear as the videos and articles are or talk about.

Is there a class or a Hummingbird guru that I can hire to gout on the water with me to show me what I need to do?

Wish I lived in miss., we could go for a ride and you would be up to speed in an hour! That would be my recommendation, see if you can get someone to ride along w you.

Redge is hitting the nail on the head, takes a little time but once you get it set the adjustments are minor for the most part. Leave your rods put away and go mess with it in fairly clean water, keep in mind that under 1 mph your side image wont look near as good as say at 5 mph, also set you speed on your graph to a mile or two faster than your target speed, seems to help for some reason.

If you get a chance to go to the Grizzly Jig Spring Show in January, Humminbird puts on a class several times a day. Even though I have Lowrance units on my boat, I went anyway. I learned so much in that hour, it cut my learning curve by months!!! They cover everything from sensitivity settings to interpreting side and down imaging and 2D sonar. It's an amazing seminar and free of charge. They even provide Humminbird units to practice on while the seminar is going on

Plan on doing this very thing this next spring, will be my first Grizzly show and am really looking forward to it.

Thanks guys, I'll see if I can bribe someone around the Rez, but will be willing to travel. Sweeten the pot with a rod or reel or some kinda fishing hunting stuff.

I have a cousin that lives near the REZ. I have never fished it but have been wanting to for a while now! I do not feel like a pro on eectronics by no means, but I use mine EVERY trip. I feel like could not catch a fish without mine. If I come that way I will let you know. I live in Dewitt Arkansas and do venture to Grenada from time to time. Would that be too far for you?

Thanks Speck and guys, did not know Grizzley spring sale had Humminbird seminars. I have looked for HB seminars but could not find any. StLouis boat show had Lawrance seminars but no one from HB. Count me in I will be there also this next spring. I am in same boat as you Preditor861 am looking for more help with my 899. Feel I learn just a little more each time out but also need more help to speed my learning process. Rickie on here has helped me so much and can't thank him enough. I would think Humminbird would hire a few guys to go around country doing seminars. I would think that there is a thousands of people on the fence with spending lots of money on electronics worrying that they will not be able to figure out how to use them, I know because I was one of them. And like you I would not mind spending a few bucks on a seminar or going with someone on the water to learn. Would think the pay back for a company like Humminbird to hire guys to travel around and do seminars that would give fisherman the know how and confidence to want to go out and spend hundreds even thousands of dollars buying electronics would more than pay for itself.

Redge, that off go for someone local? Maybe some weekend when your not at killer, you could learn me a thing or 2.

Guy that goes by doudlegobble00 on the bull nettle forum used to post a lot of si information over there. He was from the Rez. Dondon runs that thing over there. U can send him a pm and he may be able to hook u up with this doublegobble00 guy. It's been several years ago so I can't remember for sure but I think he was giving some 1 on 1 instruction back then. Would be worth checking out.

Go to YouTube, you can find all kinds of videos on these units. There is also a full length seminar on there with a guy from Hummingbird
