Wheeler in Oct.
Hey guy's, I'm going to be at Wheeler in mid Oct. catfishing and was wondering if the crappie bite would be any good then too. Looking to take a day off and crappie fish. We are staying at the cabins at Joe Wheeler State Park. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Bo

Well maybe this will help get a response. ROLL TIDE!

Sorry no one answered you not a lot of guys here fish wheeler. You might get some answers on the Mississippi forum. I would think it would be great crappie fishing in October but I've never been to wheeler.
-
Thanks 175, I figured since it was in Al. some would know.

Wheeler is great year round, but my fishing is ultra shallow and specialized. All my fishing year round is in 6 feet of water or less and from a kayak.
-
I can't figure out why you'd send him to the Mississippi board for advise on an AL lake.
-
I did not respond basically because it was a loaded question. You can catch crappie on Wheeler year around and if you are in the right area it can be good in October. I can't predict if it will be great at that time but the odds of catching them would be good in my opinion but they will not be biting in every location you fish.

Some of the Mississippi guy fish wheeler and pickwick.

What part of the lake are you goin to?
-
Ill be staying at Joe Wheeler cabins so mostly the lower lake area.

Boa I'm late to the party here but if you find the shad on the channel edges of 2nd and first creek you should pick up a couple of crappie but like Scott said it can be hit n miss. This is done pulling cranks mind you. The shad tend to move out into the reservoir and completely scatter on the lower end of the lake.
October is my tailrace time below Wheeler drifting yellowtails.

Oh..... If you have a big cat rod or 2 .... Oct can be gold for 50lb+ cats on this end of the lake drifting skips at the mouth of elk....2nd creek and shoal Creek on Wilson.

My fish don't show up till the water cools off and there is no promise when that happens. Wheeler is a fairly big lake and there are a lot of options. First Creek and Second Creek are really good options. Feel free to PM me and maybe I can help, if nothing else a place to get bait.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I'm 9 day's from a dream trip and can't wait. rotfl

You are around a lot of good crappie fishing right at Joe Wheeler. I live only about 3 miles away. Around the boat slips at Joe Wheeler are good that time of year. There are also some submerged structures around the golf course on First Creek to.
-
The back of Second creek across the lake from the cabins holds good crappie and drifting a minnow or jig along the channel ledges should be good. also lots of bait balls in the coves and the depth in those ranges from 2-25 ft so likely can find crappie if you can find the depth they are at which can vary greatly from one day to the next. if you see bass or stripe schooling shad try fishing under them for crappie.

Fish Treetops in 20 FOW in Elk River. Thats a short boat ride EAST of where your staying. Jigs and or minnows on a slip float, If u mark fish in the top use jigs if you mark them on the top of the top fish minnows at the depth they are holding.
