Too high in the water column to leave a shadow on the right side. The water depth dropped on the right side too. Thats my guess ??????? Still trying to comprehend what I am actually seeing.
Quite, but this would be my only chance to get a sonar quiz right!!!
Being high in the water column sounds like a good answer since the bait ball is only about 2' deep based on the scale in the pic. The bait ball in the lower left of the pic has a shadow and they are closer to bottom.

Looks like that bait ball is directly under the centerline/keel of the boat. Note that you can see a shadow of it on the left, which tells me more of the bait ball is on the left side. The bait ball split when you went over them
The magority of them was on the left side during the enitial scan
Since the bait ball is almost directly under the boat, the sonar shadow would be in the water column and therefore can't be seen.
Assuming the bottom was fairly level, the shadow would not appear if they were too high in the water column.
Let's remember that the HB 455kHz SI beam covers from the water's surface to all the way past vertical ...
Any target within the reaches of the SI beam coverage (right SI beam in this case) ...that are "close enough" OR "reflective enough" can be painted "x distance away from the xducer" in that side of the SI image format ...
