I was wandering if the Helix 5 would be a good choice. I more than likely will not buy this season but would like to know more.

I'm very happy with my Helix -5. I have a freind who has a 899 and he likes mine more than his.
Heck of a deal here from one of our regulars:

I have had my helix 5 fur about two months and am just starting to learn the settings to adjust it better. I am more impressed all the time, the detail is amazing it's hard to fish sometime for riding around looking at things.
I know they are a little expensive but I really like the hds Lowrance, but I've never used hummingbird to give you a comparison. I just started with Lowrance and stuck with them.
If you are close to Draffinville Ky go see Matt at Bass and Gas. He has very good deals on everything they can install if you want they will help you with upgrades and they have a great service department.
Just purchased and installed the elite 9 chirp on the bow. And bought a hds 7 gen 2 touch last night to replace in the back.
Ill be cleaning up to default, (2) hds 8 gen 1 units to sale by the weekend.
Lowrance has been a trusted brand for me.
I resisted getting into the DI/SI game as long as I could. I couldn't fish the way I do without 2d color sonar and GPS mapping. It took some arm twisting from friends and family here to take that step.
I was a Lowrance guy when I tournament bass fished in a previous life. I've been Humminbird since I got into the more advanced stuff. I started out with a 788 then added an 898. When a good deal on some used units came along, I went to 2 898s then to a 998.
I've bought a 1199 and a Helix 10 for the new rig and will have a learning curve to be able to use them as comfortably as my previous units.
My advice would be the same as others, buy as big a screen as you can afford but consider what you want to do and see with the unit. I have zero desire to have SI on the bow of my boat so I saved several $$ by going to the Helix 10 with GPS/DI. The 1199 is DI/SI so I had that covered already.
I know it's a want and not a need but the touch screen units like the hds models are great and easy to get around to adjust exactly the way you need it quickly. Without going through menu screen
