That is nice. Glad ya'll found some hungry for Ray.
Good pics, congrats guys. Looking forward to reading the report :)
Attachment 212975Well John the fish were much more hungry for Tim's jig than mine, even though we were using the same jig. :scratchhead
We hit the water right at sunrise and had great weather with a cool cloud cover. However, bright sunny days seem to push the fish into the brush better, so we had to work for our limit.
If you jig brush piles you are going to get hung up occasionally. Smart me had one reel set up with braid and a light wire hook on the jig. I was able to retrieve every hangup with no trouble and never lost the jig. I also had not the first touch on it. If I was more proficient at this technique I may have had better luck, but I switched back to the mono and caught fish so the jury is still out on this topic. It takes a bit of practice to get the knack of this type fishing as I was reminded today. I have taken friends who are good fishermen on this style fishing and watched them struggle to get (or feel) the bite. It is a fun method and feeling that thump is what it is all about. So each time I learn a bit more and it is fun watching someone like Tim who is very good at his haul the in. We fished dozens of piles and some held no fish and a couple we got 3 to 5 fish. We were in less than 10 FOW all day and some of the best piles were in 5 or 6 FOW, so the theory of having to fish deep in the hot summer apparently was never shared with the Santee Crappie.
We fished hard till about 3 PM and loaded up to head home.
Many thanks to the Inkdabber for a great trip,

Since you don't see me with huge catches very often I thouht I would close with a picture of a nice one I caught and another cooler shot and you can actually see my name on the cooler.
Thanks Ray for the Nice report.
congrats guys !!! I saw the post yesterday but was going to wait for the details from SeaRay , which is a very good summary of the days event and a nice mess of quality fish too !!!!:ThumbsUp now for the big question looking at the time difference in the post, SeaRay did Ink wear you out hauling in all them fish ??? I bet you was wore out !!!!
"SeaRay did Ink wear you out hauling in all them fish ??? I bet you was wore out !!!!"
What was your first clue?
I'm jealous of all of you. That's a fishing trip to treasure.:biggrin
Got out the cooker and fried up a batch of fresh crappie fillets. Our older son came over and joined us for dinner. Man it is hard to beat fresh crappie fillets. Had some coleslaw and baked sweet potato and ice tea to go with it. I weighed one of the larger fish and he was just under 2 lbs. Most ran 1.5 to 1.75 lbs with only a couple at a pound. We threw back several that were 8 or 9 inches along with a couple of little fellows not much bigger than the jig. Not sure how they got it in their mouth.

These cool mornings sure feel good after all the heat. I noticed our bottle tree is getting a bit of fall color to it. See the red on the right side? :Rofl

Looking mighty good Ray!
Great catch Ray
Good report Ray! These cool mornings are awesome and are very welcomed to. A good day on the lake is great, add a friend and the day becomes priceless :ThumbsUp Congrats guys on the day and catch.
Congratulations to you both on a good day of fishing. I hope y'all went to is it the stumphole where that restaurant looks over the lake to finish up the day. The last time I was there they had good food. Thanks Tim and Ray for the report and pics.
Mark, we put in at Popular Creek. We did not make it by Stumphole, but I've had many of Dave and Dee's breakfasts and Dave's Moms pies are to die for(or from). They have done a good job running the store and are really nice folks. I have bought a whole pie and brought it home to enjoy.
What a great report with some awesome pictures!! It looks like you two had a great day on the water.
With the new addition to the family I haven't had the time to fish this summer like past years, but I love single poling in the summer heat. I've always found that some of the shallowest, most unsuspecting, structure will hold crappie in the dog days of the summer. And you are right, there's nothing like feeling that thump!
That's an interesting tid bit on the braided line. I use braid on all my jig poles but I tie a fluorocarbon leader on. I love the braid for the added sensitivity and the fluoro has less stretch than mono. I used to use mono exclusively but switched over a few years back. I can say first hand that I've seen line type and size make big differences in a days fishing.
If the stars line up properly I plan to be on the water this coming Saturday morning. It'll be the first time in nearly two months my boat has seen water other than a few sprinkles of rain. I believe in going to reline a pole with mono just to see what difference it makes.
What pound test do you use Ink? I used to use 4 lb when I fished mono on the jig pole.
Derek, I think it had more to do with who was holding the pole than the type line that was on it. :Rofl
Ray you can be quite the comedian at times. Derek, I use 8 pound test the majority of the time. I really have taken a liking to Vanish. When fishing heavy vegetation, or when the big fish are real shallow in the spring, I use 20 pound braid so I can hoss the fish up and out of the cover without fear of breaking my line. I haven't seen any reduction in bites due to braid. Of coarse, the water is usually somewhat stained early in the year.
Great report and good to see some fish.
Good report guys, looks and sounds like a good time was had!! Thanks for sharing!!
