:yikes "Just how big a ol boy are you?" - Roy D. Mercer
Can't get over how he's grown since last year, John! That boy is gonna put a hurtin' on some folks in the future. Isn't he just in the 10th grade now? I see a college scholarship in his future. Thanks for the post.
Good luck to your son and his team this year. Yes it is almost that time of year and I love fall and football. Go hogs and cowboys.
To answer Roy's question: 5'11" 260 lbs
To answer your question: Yes, he's a 10th grader
John is a good boy and has worked out/ practiced all summer getting up at 7 a.m. weekday mornings and heading off to the field house. After that, he and a friend have kept 5 yards mowed all summer long as well. Lots of afternoons, he would drag in around 3 o'clock, take a shower, and go to bed. He's really grown up a lot. Still got some growing to do too, not a whisker on that baby face yet. Man, he'd kill me for that one. :)
He and a friend went to the UCA camp back in June and the two of them held their own against everyone there, as far as the linemen went. The UCA coaches told them that they were going to keep up with them and offered both John and his friend (and their families) free Bears tickets. Coach told them to just let him know what game they wanted to come to.
The Hooten's Arkansas football preview had good things to say about our Harmony Grove Hornets and mentioned several key players and what was expected from them this year, John being one of them. First game is against Bearden on September 4. Bearden is always tough and we'll see what we've got right out of the gate. GTT
Ski Trip, I sat here for a minute thinking about just how much my son is growing and changing. Not just football, but the boy growing into a young man. Almost teared up. I better enjoy these next three years because after they are gone, he'll be gone off to college where I won't see him everyday. Makes me sad.
Here's a 4th grade peewee football pic that one of the kids' mother took just before they ran out on the field. It's a family favorite.

This was 6 years ago. Seems like last week. GTT
GTT, no doubt Mariota was a tremendous QB at Oregon and hopefully he will do the same for your Titans.

This is my son's senior year at Bryant. I am looking forward to this year and hate it that it's his last year. My youngest son is sidelined again this year due to his cancer treatment so this will be my first season that I won't be coaching football. Gonna miss being on the field with him and all the kids, next year he will start school ball, so our pee-wee days are over. Good luck to all the teams and be safe. GO HORNETS!!
Good luck to both of your sons. Looks like you got a big ol boy too! Go Hornets! GTT
Got off to a tremendous start tonight. Up 42-0 on Bearden at halftime, game ends 42-6. Harmony Grove takes the Bill Manning Trophy back for the first time in a few years. Proud of my boy and his teammates and coaches. Great job tonight, guys! GTT

Hornets take to the road this Friday against a tough Prescott team. We'll find out what we've got in this one. 3A game of the week according to Hooten's. GTT
Hornets dominated both sides of the ball. Prescott scores a late TD to make it closer, but my son's Harmony Grove Hornets win it in P-town 26-13. MUCH improved team from last year. Proud of my boys! GTT
#79 leads the Hornets out of the tunnel in Prescott. Loved it! GTT

Getting ready to head over to Rison. Another BIG game for the Harmony Grove Hornets............we shall see. Rison beat Junction City (defending State Champs) last week, so I know they'll be pumped up. I hope Hooten's hasn't jinxed us by picking us by 6. Hope #79 and his crew are ready for this one tonight. GTT
I'm enjoying your posts GoTennTitans. Keep them up for the season. Love prep football. Thanks.
Well friends, a great game played tonight by both teams. Rison ran all over us, while we passed all over them. Rison leading 21-20 with us driving inside the 10 yard line with 4 minutes to go in the game when the whole game turned on one single play. Our QB had played a great game all night long and had already thrown for 3 tds. We had them on their heels. QB scrambled, saw daylight, headed for the end zone and a Rison player poked the ball out and we fumbled into the end zone. Rison player picks it up and takes it the other way. Rison 29-Harmony Grove 20.
HG boys are disappointed, but that's part of the game. No injuries for either team. Both teams will have successful seasons this year. Lots more football to be played. GTT
The McGehee Owls visit HG tomorrow night to open conference play. The Owls are always tough and it's been a few years since we beat them. Front line better be ready to plow open some running lanes or it could be a long night for us. GTT
WOW, what a game. HG scores, McGehee answers. McGehee scores, HG answers. Then HG takes it over. Harmony Grove scored 41 points in the second half and take it at home 69-34 over the Owls. Been a long time waiting to beat this team.http://i1363.photobucket.com/albums/...pstfonrzwq.jpg
Here's me, John Boy, and Mama after the big win. GTT
Congrats to all of you on what must have been a great game! Looks like John Boy must have opened a few running lanes!
Thank you Ski Trip. Yes, he did play a nice game last night. 3rd play from scrimmage, our senior RB got on John's butt and followed him through the hole he created, then peeled out around him and scored on a 60 yard run right up the middle of the field. Running game was on all night, which opened up the passing game for our backup QB. He was nervous and scared all day at school yesterday, but he played a good safe smart ball game last night. We also had a senior score his first TD of his career on a kickoff return and one of John's sophomore teammates scored 3 times and had an interception return for almost a 4th score. Lots of 10th graders making good things happen down here. HG ain't no pushover anymore! I am so proud of ALL the kids and the coaches, who are doing a great job with this team. GTT
Just received this pic from a girl on the yearbook staff. Apparently John and his friend Cam, the running back who was voted player of the game, got a little excited after a score last night.

Hornets travel to Genoa tomorrow night for a battle down south. We'll see tomorrow night. GTT
Go Hornets!
Thanks for the support! The Genoa Dragons played their hearts out and led 24-20 early in the 4th quarter, which was somewhat of a surprise to be quite honest. We had 3 costly turnovers and a dropped TD pass that kept Genoa in the game too. HG Hornets took it over scoring 3 TDs in the final 5 minutes of the game to win 40-24 on the road. This game was closer than the score would lead one to believe. Hornets came out very flat and almost down until the last quarter of the game. We'll not be able to beat Fouke, Fordyce, or Smackover playing like we did tonight. Weather was great and there were no injuries. GTT
Good job, and good comeback!
Congrats to ur Hornet team on there success so far this year. Our Bryant Hornet team is off to good start at 5 and o. Very proud of this team as they have overcome tragedy and 3 sr to season ending injuries. My boy was named offensive player of the week from his coaches for his 9 pancakes blocks against Catholic last Friday. We travel to Alma this week and Hootens has picked to lose by 4, boys are fired up over it. Hope it leads to another win. Good luck all Hornet teams and be safe !
Them Hornets have been swarmin' and stingin' all over the state, haven't they?! Congrats to your son and his team. 5-0 is always a nice place to be. We'll take 4-1 here at HG, especially since we were 1-4 this time last year. Feels pretty good watching your boy's team win instead of coming up short week after week like we saw last year. No senior leadership.
Oh, and I know about pancakes too! I don't think JJ has ever had 9 (wow), but he gets his share. Hope your Bryant Hornets win at Alma and our HG Hornets win their Homecoming game this Friday against Fouke. Hope they ALL stay healthy all over the state. GTT
Harmony Grove 28-Fouke 20. HG had 4 turnovers, one occurred on the 1 yard line just as we were about to put Fouke on ice with 2 minutes to go in the game. Can't keep having this happen. Also, we dropped 3 interceptions. One of those was deflected right to a Fouke receiver for a TD. Fouke played hard and was in it until the final play. HG better get this fumble-itis out of their systems, quick. Two weeks from tonight is a BIG showdown with #1 ranked Smackover! They'll beat us handily if our kids don't get their heads on straight.
But hey, no one was injured and this time last year, HG was 1-5. I'll take 5-1 and shut my mouth! Good Homecoming win in front of a packed house and all the perty girls. GTT
We'll the Bryant Hornets escaped Alma on Friday with a win 27- 24. They are very proud to be the Sr class to get Coach Calley is 100th win. Lost another back for season due to injury, we travel to Big bad Greenwood on Friday night gonna be tough row to hoe, they are very good. Good luck to all the teams out there and be safe on and off the fields
Congrats on the win for your son and his coach. That's a nice accomplishment that the coach will always remember. I hate to hear of players getting hurt, but that's part of the game. John got caught up in a pile and came out limping, but he shook it off. Said his ankle got rolled on, but nothing serious. I fully agree about being safe on and off the field! Wish them all luck! GTT
Heading over to Lake Village tomorrow right after school. Hoping things go well. GTT
Well, that was quite a trip over there from Camden. Just got home. Harmony Grove won convincingly 41-7, but one of our 11th graders broke his ankle. He and his family headed to the hospital just before halftime. He's a tough kid and he'll be back next year ready to roll! Big John got player of the game tonight as our running backs gashed Lake Village right up the middle every play. Coach told me at halftime that John told him early in the first quarter that his man couldn't handle him and we should run "belly" at will. They did!
That sets up a HUGE showdown with Smackover next Friday at Harmony Grove. #1 vs #5 in the state. Both are undefeated in 3A conference play. May be THE biggest game ever at HG. Certainly the biggest in the last 10 years. GTT
Well big bad Greenwood put it on us last night. Coach made the call to pull all the starters at halftime and let them have it after two more staters went down and that game has no meaning towards playoffs. Good call by coach ? Not sure how i feel about that call after almost 400 miles round trip. Boys will regroup for homecoming this week and carry on the fight. At baseball now for last game of fall ball the off to Whelen Springs for some smoke pole action. Good luck next Friday Go Hornets
Just received a few more pics from the yearbook staff.

And against Fouke.
Smackover comes to see us tomorrow night. Gonna be a rainy 3A showdown at the Grove. I think we'll give them a game. Last year, they got us 55-6. Hoping for a great game! GTT
HG scores on the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, then played well for a while and then in spurts in the second half. #1 Smackover takes the win tonight 28-7 in a rainy, wet, muddy, sloppy game in Camden. Next up for the Hornets is a short trip to Fordyce to face the redbugs! GTT
Getting ready to go to Fordyce to face the Redbugs. They have a stud RB whose averaging 200+ yards per game. Hope the Hornets play their A game tonight. GTT
Well they didn't bring their A game. In fact, we played as poorly as I've seen this season and Fordyce ran all over us all night. Redbugs in a beat down 39-6. John was injured and stayed down for about 5 minutes before getting to his feet and walking it off. He was out a few plays and went back in and finished the game. Scary though seeing your kid laying out on his back with all the other kids from both teams on a knee around him. Did NOT like that sick feeling that came over me at all. Congrats to the Redbugs tonight. GTT
