Great turnout for our Oologah Tournament, 17 boats. I want to first thank Dean at WINGANON BAIT AND TACKLE for doing a great job of hosting us. He had breakfast going around 5 am and stayed all day to help with the weigh in. Thank you to all who came out and fished with us. It was a very competitive tournament with less than a pound separating the top 7 teams. Congratulations to all the winners!! Don't forget our next tournament on Aug 29th on Ft. Gibson Lake. Our tournament directors will get a post up about check in and weigh in soon.
Here is a recap of Brian's and my day. We started out fishing brush in 16-18 fow but found the fish had moved shallower with the cool morning. We caught tons of fish all day, but like everyone else found out " a 12 incher was hard to find", unless you are KEVIN! We caught fish on standing timber as well as brush piles. I drop shot minnows all day and Brian used jigs most of the day. I will say our biggest 2 fish did come on a jig. Pearl and pumpkin/chartreuse were our best colors. We must have caught 125-150 fish, the fishing is going to be real good on Oologah in a year or 2.

These fish everyone was catching were in the 11" range. It's the same group that was 9" this last fall. Oologah had one heck of a spawn for this particular batch of Crappie. It's the older fish that seem to be so elusive. I think we were all trying to find at least a couple of those fish and those that did were in the money. This tournament played out pretty much like those who fish Oologah on a regular basis predicted.
Thanks Doug and Brian for doing such a good job in organizing it!
What part of to lake is producing the best ? Upper end, mid lake or lower end ? My boat and I are OLD and can't cover the while lake in one day.
Welcome to the forum KCMasterpiece! I look forward to your posts and just ask that you go easy publicly on my fishing, boating and electronics disorders! You guys better hope we don't show up for the Gibson tourney- we learned enuf in this one to move up to eighth place next time! Thanks to the organizers and I hope that more of the winners ( and others) will post as Doug did, some info about how you went about it- coordinates optional.
Congratulations to the winners James and Zack. Congrats to Jeff and Johnny too for coming up and finishing a strong second on a lake they don't fish very often. Gaston and I had a great time fishing the tourney and getting a chance to see everyone again. Doug, Brian and our host Dean at Winganon Bait and Tackle did a great job as usual running the tourney and providing a great place to meet. As the weigh in showed, the competition was really tough today. Dad and I caught tons of fish all day, but struggled to find the 14 inch fish we needed. We hit some shallower piles early and found better concentrations of fish there. We both fished with jigs but i had a couple of rods rigged with minnows too. I jigged with one rod, alternated that with drop shotting a minnow and had another rod rigged with a minnow to fish straight down. Dad double dipped with jigs all day. The minnows caught more fish but the jigs caught the majority of the big fish we weighed in. Our best colors were pumpkin and chartreuse and blue and chartreuse. Dad caught our biggest 14" fish on blue and chartreuse. We caught em early fishing around 10 ft deep. We moved deeper to 15-20ft midmorning and went back to shallower piles and picked up a few more good fish at the end of the day.
I appreciate the congrats. Me and my fishing buddy have been fishing here and there and catching lots of good eating fish, but nothing we felt could win us a tournament. We haven't fished north of wiganon all year but in years pass we have caught quality fish in the timber. When we launched we were truly surprised no one was behind or ahead of us. When we got in the timber we fished 20-30 trees along the creek channel with no bite. We powered up the motor and started looking when we came a across a nice flat with bunches of timber here and there. The trees were in 10-12 ft of water and we were fishing 7-9ft deep. The trees that held fish were either grouped up or had submerged limbs. Lime chart and blk and pink were the best colors. We power fished the trees to maximize our time. That means dip and rip. Lol! Lost some really nice fish but caught enough. We finished the last hour of the day fishing Spencer where we caught a few 12" fish. All in all a good day. Hopefully I can get free to fish Gibson.
Thanks Guru for a really helpful report. I have been intending to dip that timber for some time and now I have a pattern ( temporary I'm sure) to work from.

It was good to see everyone again I told Doug the tournament went really smooth. Good turnout, good fishing, lots of fish were caught. The challenge was finding the bigger fish, right now on many of our lakes on our trail lots of smaller fish are being caught. I think this years flood helped the numbers on all of our lakes which means good fishing for years to come. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Ft Gibson Tournament where we will be hunting the elusive Big Black Slab. EB
Man it looks like all you guy's had a blast and I sure hated missing it as I was in little rock with my dad during his surgery removing a tumor from his brain. All went great with the surgery and dad is recovering fine and I hope to see you all at the Gibson tournament with prefishing starting this Saturday and Sunday. WSD
