With the carp in the cut off and the White at 23", I think I'd just cut the yard. The bank at Mossy and the one at lower Perish washed out (unless they have fixed it) and the river can run straight through East Moon. When the river goes down most of the water goes out of East Moon. It was a super fishery in it's day. All of the boat camps on the oxbows on the Mississippi here closed years ago within 30 miles in either direction.
I have a lot of great memories from those two places. I know they still catch fish in the MS. river oxbows their just not what they use to be and that is a fact, darn carp. However, I guess you could wear protective body gear, a catchers mask, put your head on a swivel, have one person on point with a shotgun, ready at all times when you start or run your big motor to shoot the pesky critters and go catch a mess at midway, Whitehall, tunica, Desoto, or any of the other great oxbows.
We as a group have camped at Tunica River Park. It has restrooms, water and electricity. Tables on a concrete slabs with a grill and covered.
Mosquitoes will carry you off if not enough spray is used.
We fished the cut off and river for a few days. The carp we boated at the cut off were cut bait on the river.
Isn't Whitehall closed to the public now???
I think the pay ramp is closed. I had heard that Fred which lived there and kept up the ramp and parking lot died. I don't know if its is legal to access the chute from the river or not.
Well, Gomer did you go to the cutoff?
I sure would like for some of you "experts" come down (Tunica, Flower Lake, Beaver Dam) & teach me how to push cranks!!
All I can catch are Gar & catfish! I have resorted to bream fishing! Can't even find a bass like days of old.
With the recent, late Miss River rise, I wonder if it's going to help or hurt our Oxbow fishing?
Also, I having been trying to "net" the Asian Carp all year & so far, have had very little luck getting enough to make a run to the processing plant! You know it's bad when you can't catch Carp!
There is a processing plant for them??? I'm bouta make some money now!!!
There sure are processing plants. One at Indianola (Moon River or New Moon Foods) will set a container for you & call 'em when it's full. The one at Sunflower you have to deliver.
Went to East Moon in white river refuge. Quite a mystery. They posted Thursday that the road was just opened. Got there yesterday and the roads were dry but area around the ramp showed lots of traffic and dried ruts. 1 other truck there. Water low and stained. Fished from across from the ramp to the back of lower Parrish and still looking for the first crappie. Too late.
What about the yard?
What yard? I cut the backyard last week. Most is brown with a little green.
Not not California, Indianola, Mississippi. Container? Depends on where you live. They try to stay within 100 miles, i.e., drive time 2 hours. Trucks are refrigerated tho..
I went to the cut off last week on a Friday ,not another boat in the place ,really strange . After 4 hours of fishing I see why no one else was there .Sad times , we have had some good times there in years past. I wonder why the Game and Fish commissions aren't trying to pool resources and get rid of the carp. I understand it is a monumental task but no effort is not the answer.
Illinois' answer to the carp problem is trying to convince everyone here to eat them. Some folks say the taste good. I haven't had any that I really like. You can't run a boat on the Illinois river or any of the back waters without getting hit by them anymore. Sad.
Bring them home and plant them in the rose garden.
Tomato fertilizer !!!!
There's a YouTube video from LSU on how to clean them. I blowfish them but they stick way too bad to try to eat
All these states think they have the answer to the asian crap problem. I haven't seen it yet. If they get in the boat they are food, trash or fertilize. They don't get returned to the water.
Just wish I was seeing more of a consolidated effort with the USFW and the state agency's to eradicate these fish . I really believe they may cause the worst damage we have ever seen to the sports fish across this country . We as sportsmen should be more involved in putting pressure the right sources to get something done or you will see all crappie ,bass and catfish suffer .
AMEN! Typical govt effort, study it & talk about it forever, delay doing anything, maybe it'll go away... DUH!
The only solution is EVERYBODY has got to get involved & start HARVESTING the dang things! We have been experimenting with the Australian traps, electro shocking, all types of gill nets, etc. Even brought some experienced commercial fishermen from CHINA!
So far the best & most cost effective (less labor intensive) method has been electroshocking withe the large (hi voltage) Root rigs like the biologist use to FIND the schools & then use the trap gill nets to block them & DRIVE them into the traps / gill nets.
needless to say, it's a learning experience which requires a LOT of dirty, nasty, hand labor. And, nobody but us old school farts are willing to do it!!!
Maybe it will take an organized team effort using sport fishermen to help . This is massive under taking because they have let them multiple for so many years ,but they are not going away on their own.
Team effort is right! Illinois seems to be the only state / area that's being proactive & aggressive. Miss claims they're broke. TN & AR Givin lip service. KY waking up like the carp tourney they had on KY Lake. But they didn't follow up
IF Mississippi is broke they should partner with the processing plants and have them put the money up for a tournament and they can process the fish to offset the cost . All Miss. Game and fish would have to do is run the tournament and put in a little man power. If amazes me how some organization's can find so many excuses to do nothing.
I know ARK , is only talking !
On another website a member was run off because he was a commercial fisherman. He made a lot of post that made great sense, but some members didn't like what he did.
At the time rough fish would bring 0.50 per pound and up. Some of the oxbow lakes in his area had nothing but asian crap that use to be great places to set nets for other fish. He changed his mind on what to catch. A few fish for 0.50 per pound or a boat load for 0.30 per pound.
The last I looked at TN rules you couldn't have a live one on any of the state's waters. If it's in a trash bag it will be dead soon enough and not causing a problem.
I could see commercial fisherman making a strong comeback for targeting this species , especially if the money gets right .
Please tell me what site it was...I have been trying to HIRE commercial fisherman. New Moon Foods bought 10, 20 ft boats (with 10 more to come) with big Yammies, & 10 trucks! They are looking for folks to hire to man them.
Faith, you gave me an idea the state of CA added to it. I'll reply when I get a reply from the state.
It can be amazing what we can be done when organizations work together , instead of having pissing contest where no one wins . Good luck Canebreaker , hope we hear some positive results .
Yes it could be done. Control, that is. Eradication is probably impossible. If we all work towards making folks aware, & finding a solution! Commercial harvest so far is the only viable solution.
Here's my reply from Dennis at MDWFP, "You could sell them to Moon River Foods."
On a trip to CA I saw vending machines that collected and paid you for aluminum cans. A machine could be set up at locations like Tunic Cutoff that would weigh the fish and pay you something for your time. A container at locations to put them in as you leave the lake. Let people know we are trying something to rid us of this fish.
Yes, Dennis is a good friend! We've been working on this AC deal with Moon River Foods (MRF) for over a year.
Problem is we can't catch enough to make a "container setting" work using the "regulation" nets . I had only had one day where we caught about 300#'s with a US made, (Memphis Net) "flagg" type COMMERCIAL , 4" HEAVY gill net. Rest of attempts with the lighter nets have yielded way less fish. Only 3 - 5 fish per setting. The Chinese insist on providing the very light, thin nets like they make & use in China. They are like trying to put out & handle a spider web!!
They catch a few fish, but the Carp destroy them! I.E., after one setting / catch, they are torn all to pieces, too light & flimsy to repair, might as well throw them away. The nets they want to provide are very cheap to buy (for them). I ordered some direct from China, a 100 foot by 8 foot deep, 3 inch gill net was about $35 USD. It caught about 10 carp & was destroyed. The net I had made by Memphis net cost $300. It worked & caught fish & was / is reuseable. Holds up. But, they (Moon River) are not convinced.
I think they thought that all they had to do was "build it & they would come" meaning the processing plant. But at $0.30 a pound, folks are not willing to spend the money it takes to get rigged up to make a profitable harvest. So, they (MRF) are now trying to get their own crews going. i.e., $200K worth of boats, trucks & nets, not to mention hiring full time crews. That's quite an investment not to mention the logistics of managing and the expense the crews.
We have had some crazy ideas of how to catch the things! Some "almost" are practical !! LOL, ROLF!!
All sounds great, I don't think the state will let me run nets like a commercial fisherman without the right license. A collection container at the ramp is all I'm asking for. As for now rough fish go in a trash bag for the garden. If I catch anything other than crappie and it's a game fish, I hold it up and ask if anyone wants this. No reply, it's released.
Commercial license is $300. Paddle fish little more. Don't need one in some places
EDIBLE INVASIVE SPECIES: ASIAN CARP - YouTube
Long video but worth a look.
Here's what every state needs to have a few times during the year. I even saw a few people I know in the video.
