Planes on Nimrod

Got a chance to hit one of my favorite lakes Saturday. Plan was to push minnows and followup with cranks. Never caught a Crappie on a minnow!!! Started pulling cranks behind OR 12 Offshore planer boards .... Using Bandit 300's ... 35-55 feet behind the boards. Kept 21 nice crappie. Learned that the distance between planer boards dictates how sharp your turns can be without tangling lines. Learned a consistent way to use the OR16 clips on the front of the board to make the boards work properly. Learned that trebles hooks are challenging to remove from the thumb when past the barb ... when removed, lots of blood from a small puncture!!!!
Learned that the "Precision Trolling App" eliminates guessing on depth and presentation of the Bandits. Learned Umbrella's are worth any perceived trouble!!

Nice job. We fished Saturday afternoon. Kept 16 crappie 2 cats and 1 big brim. Did not have Any big ones though. Pushing minnows.

little background .... the Planer Boards have a "flag" that acts as a "tattle tale" ... when fish bites and pulls on the line the flags starts going up and down (kinda like a cork going under, Time to set the hook!!!)

Problem was with the OR16 clip ... it should "let go" when you set the hook (snatch like crazy) ... when the front clip lets go the board drifts straight behind the boat and you don't have to fight the board pulling to the side.

Clip photo's ... one side has a hole in the pad .... the other side has a pin that sticks down in the hole. If i put the line behind the pin I couldn't get the line to "pop out" when I snatched the rod. When I put the line in front of the pin I couldn't get it to stay in as the board was pulling to the side.

What worked for me .... I placed the line in the clip over the hole and allowed the pin to push the line down in the hole. The line diameter is important as well ... this is the recommended line for the clips based on my research (.014 line diameter is FAT)

Makes me want to go take a look at my or19 releases to see if I have missed seeing a pin on them. The releases on my yellow birds work really well, but my OR19 releases just seem to have too much tension. If you have a smooth pad with no pin and the line keeps popping out on its own, twist the line several time and then put the release on the twisted line.

Don't think they have the pin. But they can be adjusted by sliding the spring back from clip end towards the attachment hole. Need to adjust backwards and try pulling out line to get the tension you need.

Jeff do you use the actual "tattle flag" attachment to where it goes up and down with the strike and have them setup to where they will release? I haven't figured out a way to do this yet. I have some of the OR12 pigtails as well. Trying to find the best setup we had quite of bit of trouble detecting when the fish were on with the boards last time out so I would like to get the flags working with the ability to release as well so the board drifts back while landing the fish.

Ok I will try those out again sometime. The tension on the spring clips are a booger to handle by oneself. I have been using braid and notice the braid slips out of the clip. Will play with them some more

Them some good deer now. My boards have orange and red clips not two red ones. Interesting

Why are yall wanting your boards to release? I use braid and have always double wrapped my line at the clips. When the flag is down reel up to board and remove it then reel in fish.

When I first started researching PB's I was under the impression that the board was suppose to release so you didnt have to fight the board and the fish. I emailed Tommy Skarlis and he said the same thing that you did .... he doesn't worry about the board releasing ... he just reels the board up and unclips the board and lands the fish. You guys are making this way easier than I was!!

I was under the impression that the first clip was to release so you don't have to fight the board? That's a big board to fight lol.

Red is OR16 (has the pin) .... Orange is OR19 .... I traded them out myself

Thanks for the video Jeff those are some nice deer! So when the first clip releases is it much easier to reel in vs keeping them clipped in as Creek suggests? My main issue was getting the flag to react properly. Mine were too stiff or too loose. I see where you have yours so I will give that setting a try. I've only used them twice. The last time out I had six poles out and hadn't caught anything in a while, reeled them in and had fish on 4 out of the 6 poles. Maybe I just need to find some bigger fish to pull the flag harder :).

Reeled in 4 that were over 2 pounds this weekend with no problem.Attachment 210464

I gotta hunt up my red releases now:biggrin I like the board to release so I don't fight the board and the way I fish, I may be also dragging cranks on poles out the side, so a released board will come right over top of the other lines with out hanging up.

I experimented with different spring settings till i found the one that made the flag stay up and show little fish bite!! Last time out i found where the bite was and started catching nice crappie .... made a few turns with the boat (important part of the story) and the bite stopped .... hmmm, I thought, caught all the crappie in this spot. started reeling in the boards and baits and had 6 of 8 tangled up with each other .... turning radius is dictated by board spacing. Put the boards back out clean and running and started catching again.

Talking about front clip releasing ... it almost sounds like a personal preference type thing the more I learn .... when a fish bites the crank the fish and crank work their way to the top so they will not get tangled with adjacent lure/board ... I haven't heard much said about the ROD being used ... I use 6'6" med/hev rods ... nothing fancy ... the thing that i like is that when the board is reeled in i can easily reach the board to unclip.

I also use 6'6" medium heavy rods by Lews
