Could be cause the hook is too small and instead of hooking in roof of mouth your just catching the lip
Bend the hook out just a lil but. Makes it "dig" more and gets more hook ups in the roof of the mouth.
Sometimes they bite the bait instead of sucking it in. If they are doing that, go to straight minnows. I run into it a couple of times a year. They are not getting far enough up on the hook.
We were thinking the hooks might be less than ideal so we eventually opened the gap some. Probably ought to look for RR's with a bigger. Thanks
Great advise on going to strait minnow...........
I love RR's...hate the too small hooks.
I like them RRs with big hooks. Got a few with 1/0 hooks. They look awesome. Best chunkin' and scoutin' bait that exists. I like some Little Georges too, but they done priced themselves outa my tackle box.
Hey Cane Pole how heavy are the RRs with 1/0 hook?? Would like to find some with in no more than 1/8oz with 1/0 hook.
Crappiehabits and I were having the same problem and we agreed we needed larger hooks. I cant tell you where or exactly what we ordered as he did the purchasing. Also on the smaller ones the baby shad jigs were catching the blade and it wasn't spinning alot of the times. Since he ordered the new ones it's smooth sailing for casting or pulling/trollin. I'll tell him to comment on the post. We also offset the hook just a tad. Has improved us stayin hooked up quite a bit. As far as regular jig heads we use the sickle hooks and I'm a fan.
SAT DOC on the MS board makes em with big hooks, identical to a RR
Thanks wilbur, will send satdoc 1 a pm.
Monks crappie has 1/16 oz and 1/8 oz road runner pro series with #2 hooks and willow leaf blade.
Set the steel to em and keep a tight line. I have caught them on 1/64th with tiny hook. Bigger hooks do allow u some room for error.
You can always get a gaff. Lol!
I just checked with Monk's, he has 1/8 oz with #1 hooks - 14 for $9.99.
Use a drop loop so the jig sits more vertical this will help with hook set in the roof of the mouth.
I'll try to get a picture when I get off work
Or a long, extending handle net might help you get control of the fish BEFORE they sense the boat and start flopping & struggling to get free from the hook.
I cast & sometimes troll with a regular or custom tied 1/16oz Roadrunner (marabou), and can't remember the last time I lost a fish on one.
When casting, I'm using 10/2 PowerPro braid & 7' Bionic Blade spinning rod .... which means that I don't "set the hook", but just keep on reeling in and sweep the rod back about a foot or so. The stiffness of the rod & lack of stretch of the braid allows me to be less aggressive on my hookset.
When trolling I'm using a 5' UL spinning rod and 6lb Vicious copoly ... which means I'm holding the rod in hand, and do set the hook with good speed & force. Using only one rod means I can control things better, and stop or reverse my direction if need be.
I do "mostly" use marabou Roadrunners, and I do trim the tail feathers about halfway back to the hook bend. I believe this makes the fish more likely to take in the whole bait, rather than nip at the tail ... allowing the hook to be farther into the mouth, thus stopping a lot of lip hooking.
All the same ... I do, now, carry a Ego Reach net ... just for those occasions that I should happen to lip hook a fish. It also comes in handy now that I'm using 10-14ft rods for certain methods, and so I can also net my partners fish without having to come out of my bow seat & down into the boat (no longer having control of the trolling motor & speed/direction of the boat).
But I will say that I "have" gone to #2 hooks on my jigheads that I use with my selection of plastic bodies ... but, that was more to give me a better gap between the hook point & plastic body, than to insure I was getting the hook into the roof of the fish's mouth. I wasn't having that problem with the #4 hooks & smaller plastic bodies, I just wanted to use larger plastics and felt that the larger hook would fit the thicker bodied lures better.
