I have a Helix 5 DI with gps on the front of my boat......I like it.
I love my helix 5 DI GPS
my thoughts are that for my purposes the Helix 7 would have served as good as my 999 for 500 less.
Couple of things to keep in mind. Transducer and speed.
Transducer for SI in the Helix won't be near as good as the HD one that comes standard with the 999 or 1199 and not as good as the one that comes standard with the 899, wish I had done the upgrade and in hindsite I would without question.
Speed: With SI speed is critical, at 1.5mph you will not get good returns like you will at say 5 mph. You will be able to see some cover and structure at the slower speeds but not as good and the slower you get the less it will benefit.
Wonder if these units will accept the 999 transducer and is there a transducer swap program available for them????
The Helix is a nice unit for the money. May not network, but for the price, it's hard to beat.
I would like to know what the 3rd plug in on the back is for?????
Just my opinion, but with your eye problems think I would save my penny's and get the new 7 series helix. Have seen no negative reviews on the helix unit. Have seen posts of screen shots from the 5 on DI and SI that were better than most 8 and 9 series units for a lot less money.
My bet would be for factory to plug into for diagnostics.
Thanks guys. I am just needing one to put on the console without side imaging. I have my side imaging unit up front. My console unit played out this week. I really just need sonar and GPS at the console.
That Helix 7 would be perfect for that I think, would give you good maps at the console just keep in mind it takes a MicroSD card so an older card will not work in it.
I have the helix 5 and now they just released the 7!!!! I want a 7 now!!
then wait til you see the 9 and then the 11. I always figure if it was good enough last week it's still good enough. You will never catch up. today's hot set up is outdated tomorrow. Learn to use what you got. They are really pretty advanced. I will never master my 999. Just wish I still had my 997.
