any advise on filet knife to get for my boat(12 volt)?
American Angler
I just purchased a Rapala Heavy Duty.
Either one is fine. I have American Angler in 12 and 110 v
Love my American Angler with the shark blade- so flexible that it's like using a manual fillet knife flipping out the ribs etc..
I use my Rapala's a lot more than my AA. I am also using my elk boning knife some and nuttin stops that from whizzing thru bones and all. Course it Rockwell's at 63.
Rockwells at 63? What does that mean General G? I'm glad you have had good luck with your Rapalas as I bought 3 lemons in a row that bogged down before they finished a few good fish.
Rockwell hardness test is an indication of how hard a material is. Really hard steel holds and edge longer, but it takes longer to resharpen.
C2 - SeaRay is correct. My 2 hunting knives test either 62 or 63. A buck knife tests around 57. My primary hunting knife has gutted 8 deer, split 3 sternums, skinned 8 deer and then quartered the 8 w/o needing to resharpen. These custom blades are made in Okla for $175.00 and will fit your hand like a glove. Resharpening takes less than 5 minutes on a set of paper wheels. I sharpened several peoples knives at the Winter Camp on my wheels.
I have an American Angler 12 volt that does a great job and a Mister Twister 110v that is even better. I bought a Rapala 12v/110v combination and it didn't do well. Not enough power, bogged down.
Thanks for the education guys but GG, you have exposed another gap in my matriculation- paper wheels?
C2 - PM me your cell and I will complete the gap in your matriculation. Once you sharpen knives and, especially, fish hooks you will never be the same. You will have no excuse to run around with a dull knife, axe or gardening tool.
Educate the rest of us while you are at it. I am not familiar with paper wheels either. :scratchhead
two paper wheels that go on a bench grinder.....one has grit on it and the other you add a polish to it.....I first saw one at Branson and have had one for about 15 years....just be careful because although i never believed you could get a knife TOO sharp...i was wrong....you can absolutely make one dangerous if you are not careful...especially fixed handled fillet knives
Now my opinion on the 12 volt knife.....Electric Outdoorsman....I used one for probably 10 yrs and it finally wore out....only to find out they no longer made them....it had plenty of power compared to all that have been mentioned and i loved that knife......now i have a berkley....it works pretty good....does not overheat...but it does need a little more power to me

stay tuned, pics comin
Looking forward to the pics.
Hard to beat a Buck Silver Creek 6 3/8 blade, strong and keeps it edge, I have since quit using electric in the boat and out.
