Home Made Dubbing

First and foremost, I want to clarify I didn't come up with this idea, it's something I found on you tube.

However, In the interest of sharing, if thought I'd show what could be done with yarn and a spice grinder.


I can think of several ideas to put this to use. I am using Wool Yarn.

Pretty neat and nice tie.

You can add some Wing N Flash to really spice that dubbing up. Nice tie

I saw that on line some place. Nice looking tie.

A coffee/herb grinder will work well. I also save my clippings of flash I. Some small canisters and that can be added in something like this.

Good post with pics. I have boxes full of dubbing I have made from yarns and other materials. Nice material to use and a great looking fly you tied.

I use wool yarn for jig bodies. I unravel the yarn into one strand.
I may have to try making a dubbing noodle from wool also.

Been doing it for years - it's a great way to mix materials for custom dubbing - just don't whirl it for too long!! especially if you put any flash pieces in you can melt them.

Just like powder paint!! write down what you used in each mix or you'll never match it again!!

Thank you so much for sharing the info .. I have one of those little grinders I use for charcoal powder for making my own black powder. I'll get another as they are reasonable and the different types of dubbing is seemingly endless.

Used to do that with trimmings from an old chunk of shag carpet.

Oh it is endless and most hair will do well, maybe get some Australian Possum or rabbit either with the guard hairs or some without the guard hairs. Anyway uuyse endless as so many different kind of synthetics you can use and for goodness sake save some of your clippings of Flashabou and any other materials you think will help some dubbing. If you make a lot save most as is and then you can add other materials in to a little at a time for different looks. I save what is left over of most everything I use because I can see where it may be useful later.
