I last used my smoker during spring break. I carried it camping this weekend.
I would plug it in, set the temp, time and turn on. Within 5 seconds it would trip the breaker.
Anyone have a problem like this on an older smoker?

Could be a weak breaker at the camp ground.
I'm thinking bad heating element.

First thing, have you tried it at home? I vote weak breaker at camp ground. Check wiring where it hooks to heating element and make sure nothing inside is grounding.

I had it plugged into the camper first and it tripped the ground fault.
I pulled out the heavy extension cord and plugged into the camp electric post, tripped the breaker.
I pulled the smoker to the post, tripped the breaker
I pulled it to 2 other post, tripped those breakers.
I'll check the element first.

Not sure of what's going on. I pulled the cover on the element. The rubber boot was holding a bit of liquid like cooked juices, I wiped it out. I removed the stay cons and cleaned the spades to test the element, it was good. Plugged the unit to a 100 ft 14-3 extension cord with a 10 amp breaker that's never tripped. It's working now.
The liquid must have caused the short.
Good news, Now get to smokin'! lol
Get some meat on that thing. We want pictures too.
We carried extra electrical cooking equipment so we wouldn't have to heat up the camper using the gas stove or water heater. Crock pot to heat water to clean with, griddle to cook on and smoker. I wrapped a pork loin and ribs in a few layers of foil and sit in the oven at 225 while we went swimming with the grandkids. They were great, even if we did have to heat the camper too.
Had it on, 62 at night and 65 during the day. It took 2 hours after the oven was turned off to get the temp down.
I replaced a window unit here at the house today. It wouldn't get below 70 during the day. I removed a 6,000 btu unit in the kitchen and replaced it with a 12,000 btu.
