ICE Fish-N reports 1/5-7

Got out for three days trying a few lakes in the Grand rapids area, looking mainly for lunker Bluegills. Got a few crappies, Largemouth bass, rockbass, perch, and pike too. They were not biting really fast, you had to work for em for sure! It was lots of fun though and we got some gills close to a pound! I was using THE Jig, and Genzbug jigs with various Lobybaits plastics...

Nice fish. How's the ice thickness? I'll be fishing over that way in about 2 weeks. We have some cold air coming. The ice should really thicken up when that starts.

WB, around 12 inches was the average, but there were thin spots, be careful...

Nice, how deep were you catching the Gills? Crappies have been slow on the lake I've been fishing and were having trouble locating schools and just catch 2-3 fish an evening. Pulled a 13# Northern this weenend, thats plenty of fish for a few days. :D

Rancherlee, the water was around 6 ft, but as you will see, they were just under the ice...

The other lakes were holding fish deep, like 20 ft. If you have clear water look shallow for green weeds, drill some holes and you could find them really shallow.
murky lakes tend to have deep holding areas, due to lack of healthy vegetation...

Do the gills hang near the bottom or suspend? Got a lake just getting safe ice that has gills. Your pics have inspired me...........

hard to say, if you dont have a sonar, just start near the bottom, if no bites, make one crank,that sould lift it a foot, try that, then another foot, til you start getting em

Been doing pretty good on the perch and Blue Backs (landlocked Salmon) but can't find the gills yet. Several of our lakes are good and safe now. Looks like we may have a good ice fishing season here in north Idaho. I hope all of those who have been waiting for ice get theres soon......

Nice bluegills real fatties thin ice here in New York about 3 to 4" but it's black ice we got some nice slabs in Greenwood lake.

Nice pics.I think our ice is done,we got alot of rain earlier in the week.Some lakes the ice is done.Sherry wants to check our lake today.I've been out 6 times so far,would like to get out some more.

We will have ice until mid April.

I was ice fishing last weekend and after a week of rain about everyday and temps nearly steady from 40-59 degrees. Our ice is gone...:(

Same here in Ohio, rain and warm temps dont make for good ice.
I think we are done for the year, but only Mother Nature knows.

well was worried bout ice being to thin last week but with this cold snap but should be fine this weekend so ill be out

john your crazy! We had open water on about everything 2 days ago. Now its solid ice again. Maybe monday since I dont have school I will try again. How much ice you think you got?

i went yesterday to check the lake we been fishing last few weekends and still had a solid 4-5 inches... its only bout a 10 acre or so pond and even on the warm days had ice on most of it except where the outflow is for it which doesnt freeze regardless cause of moving water... all cept one day this week it has been below freezing so no issues here... ill post how we do either here or in illinois thread but probably will be same stuff... 10 or so bass, some gills and 4-5 crappie...just cant loadup on crappie till it warms up there
