When reservoirs are built and then filled, the existing timber is usually left standing as fish habitat. These standing trees will stay in place and deteriorate slowly and at different rates of decay. Electronics will help you find them usually. Go up into creeks and coves to look for standing timber, then drop jigs/minnows down in different areas. If you want to see some pics of trees, brush, home-made cover, etc, you can go to the electronics forum on this site. You will find that some guys call anything underwater "brush", or cover. Here is a link to a manufacturer's site, just to give you an idea
I think what you are referring to is when someone says they are fishing over tree tops or brush tops. You would not see it , as it will be weighted to the bottom. A lot of people make their own, by lashing cut limbs together and weighting them down, marking the coordinates. Toledo Bend is full of them, but you have to have a good fish finder and understand what you are looking at, to find them. As Vic said go to the electronics forum and that may help.

Remember it takes a pretty good size stick to show up on sonar even the good ones. I think some place I read it takes a 6" limb to show up so where you see a few limbs, there are maybe more??
