I gave the 30 quart and it will keep 12 doz large minners alive no problem.
I think they have those on sale at Mack s Prairie Wings in Stuttgart.
I too can keep 12 dozen alive easily for 12-15 hours in my 30 quart. Sometimes longer if it is cold out. The Engle coolers are the best minnow keepers around. Expensive but worth it if you use a lot of minnows and they keep dying on you.
I ran across this ditty but thought it would be too small - 8 qt. is only 2 gallons, right?

Plus they're asking a pretty penny for an 8 qt. aeration cooler... My father-in-law made one himself back in the late 60's. He used that thing until he passed in the mid 90's but it was a more simple version. Were he still with us today I'd have to get him one of those big Engel live bait coolers. Those look sweet!
I got the 30qt and we've had 106 heat index and I can keep 12 doz easy in mine to med size minnows . In spring I've jept 1.5 lbs of minnows Alive for just bout a week .. Def a great investment
I have just ordered a 30 QT for myself after seeing my brother-n-law's 30 QT and him telling me how good it is. He lost a pound of minnows one weekend and decided to buy the Engal 30 QT and he loves it and hasn't lost a minnow since.
The only minnows I've lost in that cooler has been from poor quality of minnows, if u seen the minnows I got the other day they has scales missing fungus on em didn't think they would make it think I only lost 6 out of 10 doz . Definatly the best bait cooler by far , I kept over a pound for a week or better in there before I started to lose any at all
Just received my cooler in the mail and looking forward to using it. I got the 13 qt so I can use it in the boat and kayak.
On sale now can cabelas $ 15 off each size!!
We have 2 of the 13 qt coolers. One for me up front and one for my wife in the rear. We have fished the hottest parts of summer in southern Illinois and rarely lose more than a few Minnows each per trip. I know we have loaded each of them with as many as 100 Minnows without having issue. We quickly learned that we didn't need that many on the boat and usually take around 50-60 each. I replaced the garbage pump that comes with the units promptly with frabil units which are much much quieter and put out a lot more air. The batteries seem to last forever in them too. I'm not sure of the model of pump, but we purchased them at Walmart. The engel pumps we received get hot and zap the batteries quickly. The frabil pumps are near silent and I often check to make sure they are still running because I can't hear them.
I I thought long and hard about getting two of the medium size, but for our purpose these are plenty big. They are quite heavy when full even for their small size.
We we we're introduced to these coolers when we went on a guided trip with Kyle Schoenherr. He had a 30 qt and I recall it was literally packed with Minnows. If I were to guess there were at least a full pound of fatheads in his. He may have had oxygen going to them because the line came from his boat, but it may have just been an onboard pump. Either way there was a serious amount of minnows in his cooler.
The search feature is a good tool:ThumbsUp
Before I pull the trigger on one though, how is everyone's cooler holding up?
IDOT,
I know of several people that have these and LOVE them. None of them have had any issues and have recommended them to everyone.
I just bought a 30qt to use on our upcoming fishing vacation so we can hold a lot of shiners over the course of the week. Our two 13 qt coolers are going strong after lots of use. I really like how they do not leak when traveling in the car to and from the bait shop. I've loaded my one 13 qt with 2 lbs of shiners for a 30 minute drive home to put them in the storage tank, they were all live and kicking when I got home and it was literally packed with them.
Throw the pump it comes with away and buy a frabil 10$ unit, if you are deaf then you won't mind the engel, but I find them annoyingly loud.
I have the 13 and we get a pound of minnows and don't loose any in a days worth of fishing. Mostly fish in the spring. I am thinking of getting the 30 for blue gill for catfishing. I am like everyone else get the fraybill pump. The engle pump is LOUD.
My buddy I have fished with pretty regular turned me onto the Engel. They are indeed fantastic bait coolers. I just got a new to me boat and I went online to order one, and I got the 19. It was a $1.20 more than the 13 on Amazon. I just installed onboard air on boat as well, so I will not have to worry about batteries.
I love mine! I got the 30qt. No problems with it at all so far! Minners live forever in it.
I ended up getting the 30 while on vacation at Mexico Beach. Haven't tried it out yet, but it looks to be pretty solid! It'll get a work out here in the next couple of weeks.
If the Fraybill pump is better, what is the advantage of the Engal over a good cooler with a Fraybill pump?
I have a small white coleman cooler I bought from WalMart and a Quiet Bubbles aerator I have been using for two years. I lose less than a half dozen minnows from a half pound on the hottest day of the year. Does the Engel cooler work? Yes, but my setup works just as well for much less $$.
One of the main reasons I go the Engel, was the fact that it can be completely sealed and latched. No water sloshing out from the store to the boat and boat to your spot. It's a very robust little bait cooler that should last forever. I hope
Just take care of the handle, that's the only thing that I've saw go wrong. Myself and two other buddies bought this cooler, either before it was engle or it's an exact knockoff, had them 12 years or so.ours was just a cooler, not the bait cooler,no hole in the side. The handle is screwed through the lid into the plastic handle, all of ours has lost the handle.they were called " cool liner " when we got ours
Farbill makes one similar with their pump on it and it's a little cheaper. I have had mine for about 10 years and never a problem I can keep 3 or 4 dozen alive all weekend and never change the water.
Cabela’s on sale now got mine last week
Oh yea BassPro bought Cabela’s last month 6 Billion
Get the 30, use the strap instead of the handle when full, get an onboard aerator and put it underneath the boat deck. Run an air hose to the Engel with enough play in it so you can position wherever in the boat you need.

If your cheap like me you can also make your own minnow tank. Just get a power bubbles and a cooler, couple of hole drilled and bam! homemade minnow cooler!Attachment 257825
And if it is on the front deck in ruff water when you are running you get a face full of minner water, built my on several different ways and spent way more than 80 bucks doing it and ended up with the Engel. I like the 30 so I can put 20 to 25 dozen in it without any worries.
They will definantly spray you if you leave em on the front deck. I pined the wires into a two pin wire connector and added enough of a wire harness to move around in the boat where ever I needed to and to get away from the battery clamps that it comes with.
That's a lot of minnows to use in one day and you must have a bunch of extension cords if you don't use a battery
Talking about those small portable bubblers that take a D size battery, dont like them. I use a 12V version of power bubbles and it keeps the water rolling.
Yeah we use a good many, also keep a vat at the house so whatever is left goes in the vat and fresh water in the cooler for the next outing. Also use Better Bait in the water and that helps a lot as well.
I was just messing with you. I've never used better bait I wondered if it made a difference I just buy 3 or 4 dozen every day I go.
I need something I can put live minnows in at the house any ideas what to build or buy

Check out this thread. arkansasbowhunter has one heck of a set up and alot of information on there!
A buddy of mine has an old bath tub with an aerator and one of those fancy water fall looking deals that you see in a Coy pond. I don't know of it's just because it's his or not, but he says it works like a charm. He'll usually by 2 or 3 lbs of minnows at one time.
I have the 19 qt one and have no problem keeping 1/2 lb of minnows alive for a few days. I use the pump that it came with in the garage and while I'm driving to and from the lake. I switch it out with a quiet bubbles when I get to the lake.
When these are closed up, can they breath any...keep ammonia from building up?
