These new regs will be presented today at the Commission Meeting and will come out in a form of an intent the next couple of days, the intent will go on for 30 days minimum before being made law.
On Grenada, Sardis, Enid, and Arkabutla -
12” MLL;
15 fish bag limit;
3 poles per angler;
and 40 fish boat limit.
Who proposes these regulations? The game wardens or fish biologists or who? Is this because of bad spawning years in the past or just to much fishing pressure? If this passes it may put more pressure on the surrounding smaller lakes.
The State Biologist makes the proposal along with the biologist that is in charge of overseeing the big four.
Well thats their job and if they think these regulations are needed we need to stand behind them. No one really likes regulations or change but sometimes it is for the best future of our fish or game.:twocents
Only thing I have a problem with is the pole thing, a limit is a limit. No need to cut pole limits when the other is in place far as I can see.
Agree to disagree I guess and thats cool but if you werent involved the last time there was a pole change then you wont understand.
I didn't notice the pole limit. I am like you there it don't matter how many poles or hooks you are using if the fish limit is set. I don't see how or why the number of poles or hooks make a difference. Also looks like each person should be able to get their limit on the boat instead of the boat having a limit. My wife and I fish 12 poles at a time and when we get the limit we stop keeping them altho we very seldom get a limit.
With that same mentality, are they going to limit trotlines to three hooks to keep the catfish from being over harvested?
Good question, we need everyone who is a license holder in the state of MS to get on board with this and join the MS Fisherman's Assocation Group, out-of-state, in-state, expemt or whatever, if you are a license holder or can legally fish in the state of MS we need you.

You bring up a valid point in another respect, as long as you arent a commercial fisherman you are able to keep crappie off a trotline or yoyos, wonder what the difference is??????:dono:popcornQuote:

Just because there is a limit doesn't mean they want everyone to catch the limit which might explain the 3 pole limit. Kind of like when I went thru a red light and told the officer it was raining and I was going the speed limit and didn't want to slide. His response was "well, you didn't have to be going the speed limit, you could have been driving slower". Couldn't argue with him on that. Not sure if that correlates or not but it sounds good! If a fish shortage, the goal is certainly to do what can be done to decrease the outtake. Personally, I think the 12 inch rule needs to go higher. Very few fish I catch at Sardis are less than 12 inches. But 13 inches would make a big difference. There's not a shortage of catfish. Mixing apples and oranges on that debate. But there were some days I thought about catfishing because I couldn't catch a crappie! :)

I agree with you reese. They establish a limit that can be harvested based on the estimated number of people that fish a lake in a year. Then say if everyone fished the lake and limited every time then the fish population can stand a limit of "X". However you can catch that limit shud be fair game, as long as no more than the limit is kept. Poles shouldnt matter, method shouldn't matter. Amount of yoyo's shouldn't matter. The only thing that matters is the limit. And it should be STRICTLY enforced.
Why does a crappie have to be 12" to eat? I've ate many a fine dinners that included crappie that were shorter than 12". It's crazy. A 10" crappie is fine eating fish as long as it's thick enough. Give me the shoulders and I don't care about the length. Put a creel limit on it if you want to and be done with it. Let me decide what I eat and how I get it.
I'm with the guy above, 27458, I believe the pole limit is designed to reduce the number of people who take home the limit. It's a way to reduce the limit without reducing the limit. I wish they'd just put the limit where they want it and let us get there however we decide to get there. Probably too much to ask.
If they do not already, a limit should be made based on the assumption that everyone will catch it everytime they go out. And the fish popultion be sustained. And not limit poles/methods/etc.
So in a nutshell, there are only two new changes one is a 3 pole limit and the other is bumping Sardis back up to 12 inches correct?
Illinois has a 3 pole limit. Missouri actually has pole limits as well but spider riggers use the trotline regs to allow more poles by labeling their rods and not exceeding a 33 hook per man total. Won't be long before they take that away from us tho. This loophole is really dumb in my opinion but I too label my rods and take advantage and hope they never change.
Also, I must say that I don't care what changes they make. 5 poles to 3, 20 fish to 15, or whatever else they come up with. The fish are there, and if I want them, I can get them. It will take a little longer, but I was always told that anything worth having was worth waiting for and worth working for. Like with their wonderful helmet rule, I'll go along to get along, and I'll wait for another straw to break my camel's back before I go up in arms.
If and I mean if- they ever over- populate and stunt. Its over.JMO.
Sounds like a simple fix to me, just like letting every team in the NFL inflate their balls to what ever they want. Who cares?? You aren't forced to play with THEIR balls anyway. (leave it alone) Just like, number of poles, number of hooks, etc. Who really cares....when you hit the limit, you HIT THE LIMIT. Quit!!

At one time the MDWFP had fisheries that were for maintaining the fish populations in lakes and state waters. There was one in Meridian,Ms. and they closed it a few years ago as a department cut back. I don't know why they should be cutting back as they are more people buying licenses now than ever. Most all of us by the sportsman version that's more expensive. Sounds like there is a problem with too many bosses and not enough workers now days or the money being used wrong.. Why can't they(MDWFP) knowing x number of fish taken out x number need to be replaced with state owned and operated fisheries. They do this with fisheries up North for salmon and trout that I have seen on TV.
I dont see the problem with the 3 pole limit its been that way on grenada for a while.
Grenada and Sardis are already 3 poles per person, the new reg would just make them all the same. I fish by myself a lot of the time and going for 5 to 3 sux, period. We started the MS Fisherman's Asso a couple of years ago when they changed Sardis, the poles WERE NOT in the intent and the folks that trolled had no problem with the new regs proposed, when the new regs were posted after the 30 day period the cut in the poles at Sardis was there. A lot of folks POed about it and it was backdoored. We, Jigflanger, Major, and myself, went before the Commission the next month but by then it was too late. since then I have been checking on the possability of new crappie regs every spring so we would not be caught off guard. Larry Pugh is the State Biologist and a stand up guy, along with Keith Mills, the biologist over the Big Four they make the proposals for the Big Four to the Commission.Quote:

Biologists should make the decisions based on their observations of each lakes fish population's overall health. If the biologists say a 5 or 50 fish per person limit is whats needed to protect the resource, so be it. If a biologist says a 10" or 12" length limit will benefit the fish population most, so be it. BUT biologically speaking, there is no different effect on the population if I catch my 5 or 50 fish limit on 3 poles, 5 poles or 25 yoyos!!!
I go fishing to fish and enjoy myself,it's not a matter of how many fish I get to keep or how many poles I get to use.I don't keep a lot of fish to bring home anyway so as for me I'll take what ever they choose to do as long as the same rules apply to everyone.[guides,out of staters,and locals who know how to abuse our resources.

I don't see what the pole limit accomplishes. We have had a three pole limit on Weiss for a long time and it has made no difference that I can see. Size limits and possession limits make a huge difference in my humble opinion. It seems like Mississippi is being proactive in protecting its resource. Alabama needs to lower the possession limit here but money stands in the way of that.
If the biologist are supposed to be the experts then why do they need any biased input from any fisherman to begin with? Make the decision and roll with it and lets move on. From the lack of boats I see, I suspect the issue will somewhat resolve itself sooner or later. Average Joe won't keep spending money to fish in a lake and not catch squat.
It's about the revenue that the out of staters bring to MS. Not near as many people would drive to Sippi to catch 10" fish. Trophy sized fish brings in trophy dollars from non resident license sales. Guides profit, the state profits, hotels/motels profit, restaurants profit, Everyone profits from the trophy crappie fishing Sippi offers. People want to catch BIG fish and will spend the time and money to take a trophy. Same thing for deer up north and out west.Quote:

Before the pole limit I would fish with 6 rods across the front and a person in the back would have 6 rods, 6 hooks per rod. We fished for 4 hours and head home.
Before the new size and possession limits we might get close to a 1 person limit at the time. If the fish didn't bite in the area we fished we sometimes came home with none.
The revenue I generated per trip was the same as it is now. All of my tackle was bought close to home. Food and drinks were brought from home. Minnows are bought close to the lake.
I've seen it and others have reported seeing it. A boat will limit and haul their catch to shore for someone to pick up. They would stay on the lake and limit a few times during the day. Need a better crack down on those.
A limit is not a limit. Please some one tell me they have caught a limit this week! By taking away 2 poles they are reducing the number of fish you catch by 40% in the equal amount of time.
A limit is not a limit? Guess thats why I teach history instead of Math. When I go speckeled trout fishing next week, 25 is going to be 25 whether it takes 30 min. or three hours.

May have to start taking crappie and bass fishing gear and get a limit of both to come out on what it cost to go on a fishing trip. This is going to hurt the fishermen that only get to go every once in a while as getting a good mess of fish to eat or for the freezer. Some people don't get to fish a lot or very long so the pole limit is going to hurt them most. On the flip side you won't have a problem with tangling up lines as bad while pushing or pulling crankbaits with just 3 poles.
