I'm going to try more deep trolling and want to try heavier jigs with bigger bodies. Local stores don't have much selection. What do you recommend in a 3 to 4 inch grub that doesn't have a curley-tail? I guess I'm thinking of something with a paddletail or perhaps a body like a Garland Baby Shad but bigger.

I used Bobby Garland Slab Docktrs. They are a bigger profile bait. They have worked well for me
I make these four inch paddletails. The people troll with them for pike and Walleye in Canada. Look for them on my website.

You can find what your looking for in the bass section of stores. The jigs are 3-6" and imitate minnows and shad well. The paddle tails are the best bet. You can get the split tails also, they work well too. Just make sure you hook fits the bait. Need a good hook set and the bigger bait makes it harder to get the hook exposed.

These are 3 inch baits and just whatever you can think of color wise you can make. The diy plastic section here has a great source of information. Some of them sell there baits in the members section.
Also, check out Gdaddy Tackle. Frank makes BIG body plastics.
I usually throw a 1.5" or 2" curley tail like a Southern Pro Hot Grub, but at times I can get overwhelmed with dinks. Sometimes I want to step up the size to avoid dinks and maybe entice larger fish.
A dink will still tackle a larger bait. Crappie are eating machines.

Crappie town had a bait called a Daddee Shad it is available in 10 colors . It looks like a 3 inch baby shad
Kalins makes a 3" version of their 2" curly tails. They are slim bodied, not like a bass lure would be. They are nice!
Check out the new Slab Slayer from Crappie Magnet. It is a 3" Shad-style bait, and the big fish LOVE them!
I've done well with Zoom Jr Flukes.
In the muddy conditions with our wet spring, I sized up to a 3" tube for a few trips and the crappie hammered it. Make sure you use a hook that fits.

I don't like most paddle tails. Many of them don't pulse much at low crappie speeds. This tail is just like the Bobby Garland Stroller bait. It really pulses.
